Nature's Apostle

In an alternate version of Earth, where VR games were the norm, a new VR MMORPG game called Desolate Frontier has been dominating the market for six months through its beta test. The game has been so popular that almost 80% of the gamer population has preordered the game. --- This story will follow Arthur Saville, the last remaining heir of a family of noble lineage, as he ventures into the world of the Desolate Frontier, shaking the world with his monstrous skills and intelligence. But what will always remain a secret is the source of his powers. --- Most probably, I won't monetize this novel; hence, the upload of chapters will be slow. Probable upload rate: 1~2 chapters per week.

I Want To Be An Archer

THE bustling of the town square reached my ears as I got teleported to the beginning town.

<Ding! You have entered 'Rochdale Town'!>

<Ding! You have received the tutorial quest 'Start Your Adventure!'.>

I glanced at the surroundings for a moment before opening the quest tab. For me, the realism of the town wasn't a fascinating point as I have played a lot of VR games, some with even better details. Still, most of those have some or the other restrictions, mainly related to openness or sometimes combat mechanisms or even character builds.

But that wasn't the case in Desolate Frontier. Thus, I was pretty much about to experience why the beta testers rated it as 'The Game of the Century'.

After closing the quest description, I opened the map. In Desolate Frontier, only official cities and towns have a map feature, even then only important places such as the mayor's house, Adventurer's Guild, smithies, potion shops and the like could be found on the map.

The rest of the places were not shown on the map except for these few. For that one must buy a map from a merchant's shop, though one must be careful with the reliability of the maps. Thus it was advised by the beta testers to only buy maps with the stamp of the mayor, or in other words, an officially commissioned map.

Once I ensured the direction was correct, I started heading towards the Adventurer's Guild. While I was walking, I opened up my status panel to check if there were any changes to what the beta testers said.

There weren't any changes to the status panel except the Race and Title, but it was expected since it was already mentioned in the beta test that a player could not change their race or gain titles in the beta test.

While looking at the status panel, I reached the Adventurer's Guild building. It was a medieval-based three-storey building but felt more beautiful and safe, probably due to magic. Admiring what could have possibly been the world's eighth wonder if it had been built during the medieval ages of the real world, I walked inside to complete my quest. The interior of the building was quite clean and polished but that wasn't the main attraction.

"They are indeed cute," I muttered while looking at all the receptionists. Each one of them was cute and beautiful. The devs took their sweet time designing these girls.

Walking up to a free receptionist, I said, "I would like to register as an adventurer." The cute receptionist gave out a professional smile and replied, "Definitely, sir. Please fill out this form to get your adventurer licensee." She handed out a parchment with a quill.

I took the parchment and the quill and simply wrote my ign, voilà, the rest of the details were filled automatically. I handed the parchment and the quill to the receptionist and she replied, "Please wait for a moment." She walked to the backroom for a few moments with the parchment and returned with a card.

She handed me the card saying, "This will be your new adventurer's ID card. Please do not lose it, or else you will have to renew it with a certain fee. The first time's free."

"Okay, thank you." I walked out of the building after thanking her. I looked at my new adventurer's ID card and found it simple yet convenient. It was made out of some unknown metal, with my ign engraved on it along with my rank. The edges of the card were highlighted by another metal signifying my rank as Rookie Adventurer. On the top left and the back of the card was a symbol with two golden swords crossed before a purple crystal shield. It was the emblem of the Adventurer's Guild.

<Ding! The tutorial quest 'Start Your Adventure!' has been completed.>

<Ding! You have received an Adventurer ID Card.>

<Ding! The remaining rewards have been placed in inventory.>

I quickly opened the inventory menu and found two of the many blocks occupied. The two blocks were occupied by similar-looking ticket coupons. I tapped on the first coupon and a message appeared.

<Ding! Do you wish to use the Leather Armour Set Coupon (F)?>

<Yes No>

I tapped on 'Yes' and another notification popped up.

<Ding! You have obtained the Leather Armour Set (F).>

<Ding! Leather Armour Set (F) have been placed in inventory.>

I opened the inventory again, selected the armour set and equipped it. In the next moment, a leather armour set was automatically worn by me. It was a basic armour set with a chest guard, arm guards, knee guards and leather shoes.

<Ding! You have equipped the Leather Armour Set (F).>

<Ding! Your stats have increased.>

I opened the attribute panel to check the increase.

= = = = = = = = = =

|> Attribute Points

HP: 300 (+50)

MP: 10

Strength: 1

Vitality: 1 (+2)

Agility: 1 (+1)

Intelligence: 1

Mana: 1

 = = = = = = = = = =

The set increased my Vitality by 2 which also increased my HP by 200, and it was further increased by 50, reaching a total of 350. The set also increased my Agility by 1. Since it wasn't a magical one, there was no increase in Intelligence and Mana.

After this, I used the remaining weapon coupon.

<Ding! Do you wish to use the Weapon Coupon (F)?>

<Yes No>

I tapped on 'Yes', but unlike before, a different notification popped up.

<Ding! Select one of the following weapons:< p>

- Longsword

- Broadsword

- Battle Axe

- Warhammer

- Spear

- Magic Staff

- Bow and Arrow

All the above weapons are of F-grade.>

Without hesitation, I selected Bow and Arrow since I already had a talent related to it. Also, I had some real-world archery experience. Even though I wasn't competition-ready, I could hit targets with some focus and of course, some luck.

<Ding! You have received the Rookie Bow (F), Quiver and a set of Wooden Arrows (F).>

<Ding! Rookie Bow (F), Quiver and Wooden Arrows (F) x20 have been placed in inventory.>

Once again opening the inventory, I equipped the bow and quiver.

<Ding! You have equipped the Rookie Bow (F) and Quiver (F).>

<Ding! Your stats have increased.>

I checked my attribute panel and found my strength has increased by one. There wasn't any other change except that. Thus, I decided to take the first step of my adventure. And how would I do that? Obviously by finding a quest — a real quest.

Words: 1,200+

I have planned to write an auxiliary chapter describing basic game logic and explanations that I feel are necessary.
