Shin was deeply engrossed in his task, meticulously sorting a set of Fire Release ninjutsu scrolls into their designated section. Each scroll varied in size and age—some were old and worn, their edges frayed, while others seemed newer, their labels written in crisp, bold kanji. His fingers carefully traced the inscriptions on each scroll, ensuring everything was in perfect order. The quiet atmosphere of the library was calming, broken only by the soft rustling of paper and the faint sounds of Shiho working nearby.
As he placed the last scroll onto its shelf, an unfamiliar voice interrupted the silence.
"Well done, young man. You're quite diligent, aren't you?"
Shin turned swiftly, surprised to find an elderly woman watching him. Her presence was unassuming yet commanding, her kind smile radiating warmth. She was the spitting image of Shiho, though her years had added depth and wisdom to her features. Her light brown hair, streaked with gray, was tied into a neat bun at the back of her head, and her glasses were larger, resting low on her nose. Her pale green robe complemented the scholarly air about her, and her delicate frame was slightly hunched, though her sharp gaze betrayed no sign of frailty.
"Mizuki Hoshino?" Shin asked politely, bowing slightly in greeting.
The old woman nodded, stepping closer with measured grace. "Yes, I am. And you must be Shin Hamada, the young man Iruka-sensei sent to help us. I've been observing you for a while now." Her eyes sparkled with approval. "You're doing a wonderful job. The Fire Release section hasn't been this orderly in weeks."
Shin straightened, his face brightening at her praise. "Thank you, ma'am. I just want to do my best and make sure everything's in its proper place."
Mizuki chuckled softly, her voice like a gentle breeze. "Humility and diligence. Such rare qualities in a young shinobi these days. I can see why Iruka-sensei spoke so highly of you."
Her words filled Shin with pride, though he quickly tempered it with a modest nod. "I'm just glad I can help. This library is incredible. There's so much knowledge here—it feels like an honor just to be a part of it."
Mizuki's smile deepened, and she adjusted her glasses. "A wise attitude. Keep up the good work, Shin, and you'll find that this library holds more than just knowledge—it holds the keys to a brighter future."
With that, she gave him a small nod of encouragement and slowly walked away, her cane tapping softly against the polished floor.
Shin watched her go, feeling a renewed sense of purpose. Her words lingered in his mind as he turned back to the scrolls, his determination stronger than ever.
...
As the evening light filtered softly through the high windows of the Konoha library, casting golden hues over the shelves, Shin stepped back to admire his work. The Fire Release ninjutsu section now looked impeccable, with scrolls neatly arranged and categorized in perfect order. A sense of satisfaction swelled within him, though the quiet around him reminded him of the passing hours.
The once-bustling library had grown quiet. Only the faint rustle of pages and the occasional squeak of a chair hinted at lingering patrons. As Shin stretched his arms, his gaze wandered toward the now-dim windows. "It's getting late," he murmured to himself, deciding it was time to report his progress.
Shin made his way toward the main desk, where he knew Shiho and Mizuki often worked. The wooden floors creaked softly under his sandals as he passed rows of shelves, his steps measured and careful in the hushed atmosphere. He spotted Shiho first, perched on a high stool behind the desk. Her round glasses reflected the light of a small lantern as she scribbled notes in a ledger, her expression one of intense focus.
"Shiho?" Shin called gently as he approached, not wanting to startle her.
Shiho glanced up, her face lighting up with recognition. "Oh, Shin! You're done already?"
Shin smiled modestly. "Yeah, I just finished organizing all the Fire Release scrolls. Everything's in its proper section now."
Shiho hopped off her stool, her energy undimmed despite the hour. "That's awesome! Grandma will definitely want to know." She turned toward a small back room and called out, "Grandma! Shin's done!"
A moment later, Mizuki emerged from the room, her cane tapping rhythmically against the floor. She carried a bundle of old scrolls in her other hand, her sharp gaze scanning Shin with quiet approval.
"Finished already, are you?" Mizuki said, her tone measured but not unkind. "Let's see if your work lives up to all that diligence you've shown."
Shin nodded respectfully. "Of course, ma'am. I'd be happy to show you."
Shiho clapped her hands together excitedly. "I'll come too! I want to see how it looks!"
Together, they headed toward the Fire Release section, Shin walking slightly ahead as Mizuki followed at her own pace, her expression thoughtful. Though the library was emptying, Shin felt a quiet pride in the work he had accomplished, and anticipation built as he prepared to showcase his effort— and more importantly to receive the reward he came here for.
They soon arrived to the Fire Release section, where the neatly arranged scrolls gleamed under the soft light of the library. Mizuki's sharp gaze swept over the shelves, her brows lifting slightly as she took in the sight.
Every scroll was not only in its correct place but arranged with such care that the entire section looked almost like an artistic display. The spacing between the scrolls was consistent, their labels perfectly aligned, and the gradient of colors on the scroll bindings created a subtle harmony that made the section feel alive.
Mizuki, though not one to be easily impressed, found herself momentarily stunned. This level of precision... this isn't just sorting. It's art, she thought, her lips pressing into a thin line to suppress her astonishment. She glanced at Shin, who stood quietly nearby, waiting for her verdict.
After a moment, she turned to him, her expression softening into a small, approving smile. "Good job," she said simply, her tone devoid of the depth of her internal admiration.
Shin bowed slightly, grateful for the acknowledgment. "Thank you, Mizuki-san," he said sincerely.
Shiho, standing beside Mizuki, looked at Shin with wide eyes. "Wow, Shin! I mean, I thought you'd do well, but this is... amazing!" she exclaimed, unable to contain her excitement.
Shin felt a wave of pride but tempered it with humility. "I'm glad it's to your liking. I wanted to make sure it was done properly."
Mizuki gave a slight nod, her respect for the boy growing, though she remained composed. "You've exceeded expectations," she said simply.
After a brief pause, Shin hesitated before speaking up. "Mizuki-san, may I ask something?"
She raised an eyebrow but nodded for him to continue.
"Iruka-sensei mentioned that part of the reward for helping here is access to the Genin-level scrolls so... would it be alright if I borrowed one to study at home tonight?"
Mizuki adjusted her glasses, her sharp eyes studying him closely for a moment. Then, with a small smile, she replied, "Of course. That was part of the agreement, after all. But remember, the scrolls are to be treated with the utmost care and returned by tomorrow morning."
Shin's face lit up with gratitude. "Thank you! I promise I'll take great care of it."
Shiho stepped forward, her pigtails bouncing as she looked at him. "I can help you pick one if you want! There are so many good ones, but I know which ones are the most useful for beginners."
Shin smiled at her offer. "I'd appreciate that."
Mizuki gave a small wave of her hand. "Very well. Shiho, assist him. I'll finish up here. Shin, make sure to lock up your section before you leave."
"Yes, Mizuki-san," Shin said with a respectful bow.
As Shiho led him to another section of the library, Shin couldn't help but feel both pride and excitement. The day's work had been long, but the chance to take a scroll home and dive deeper into the vast knowledge stored in the library made it all worthwhile.
To be continued...
