The next morning, Shisui brought over books related to the family's history from Clan Leader Fugaku.
"Oh? There are so many! The Uchiha Clan does have some merits," Sima Yi said, surprised as he looked at the piles of clan history in front of him.
Even someone as studious as Shisui didn't read the clan history, so it was quite surprising that the Uchiha Clan had preserved so many records despite the prevailing atmosphere.
"Hehe~" Shisui chuckled with a simple smile. This was the first time he had heard Sima Yi so earnestly praise the Uchiha Clan.
However, Sima Yi quickly regretted it.
He casually picked up a book and started flipping through it, only to see:
"Today, I accepted an assassination mission. Unexpectedly, the opponent actually hired people from the Senju Clan for protection. I was outmatched and had to retreat in defeat. This is a disgrace to the Uchiha Clan, and I must return to summon the clan members to strike back!"
"Today, I called the Clan Head and the elders to act together. The Senju Clan was indeed no match for us; we successfully killed the target of the mission, but unfortunately, we let the Senju members escape. Hmph, how dare these ants oppose the Uchiha Clan! You were lucky to get away."
"Today, I wasn't in a good mood. During the execution, I encountered that Senju member again. This time he even brought along elders from his clan. Damn it, the wicked Senju Clan!"
Sima Yi flipped through the pages with an expressionless face, the motions becoming faster and faster. Soon, he didn't could bear it any longer and switched to another book after another.
"Today, our clan's territory was attacked. The Uzumaki Clan actually dared to launch a sneak attack on us alongside the Senju Clan. Fortunately, the Clan Head returned to the territory in time. Damn the Senju and Uzumaki, I will destroy you sooner or later."
"Today…"
After a long time, Sima Yi put down the book and let out a sigh.
Is this history?
There are no chronological records, no detailed biographies, and hardly any significant events; aside from a few exceptions, it's all trivial matters.
Even the major events related to the family's survival are not recorded in detail, with only simple accounts of wins and losses followed by long tirades.
They even have entries about how many times someone skipped stones; what's the use of such clan history?
"If I could find the author, I would surely give him a good beating!"
Shisui shrank his neck and slowly lowered his head, not daring to ask further.
After that, Sima Yi sighed again. "Well, having something is better than having nothing. I'll be here reviewing my studies for the next few days. You help me gather the records related to the various clans and any documents from the time of Konoha's founding as detailed as possible. I need to understand more."
"Alright, grandpa. I'll go to Lord Third to take my shift now. If there's anything else you need, just let me know when I return in the evening."
"Go ahead, be cautious in everything, and do not raise any suspicions."
"Yes."
Once Shisui left, Sima Yi arranged his ink and brush, taking another look at the piled-up books. "These books are useless as they are; it seems I'll have to organize them myself."
The main purpose of studying history is to learn from mistakes and avoid repeating them, but it's clear that the Uchiha Clan lacks this awareness.
The same errors can be continuously repeated, and their millennia of heritage has only enriched their martial prowess.
Sima Yi flipped through one clan history after another, extracting the names of Clan Heads from snippets of information, organizing and sorting them. He selected important events from the chaotic records to enrich and analyze them.
However, this task was undoubtedly tedious. In the days that followed, Sima Yi spent his days reading and revising history, lectured Shisui in the evenings after he got off work, studied Sealing Jutsu at night, and occasionally found time to teach Kai.
Busy days always passed quickly. After seven continuous days, Sima Yi barely completed his preliminary preparations.
That evening, Shisui returned with dinner and looked at the history book personally written by Sima Yi with a look of amazement.
"Grandpa, has the book been compiled?"
"This is just a summary; the detailed content hasn't been written yet, and there are still some secrets about the Uchiha Clan that haven't been recorded."
Shisui nodded and carefully opened the book, savoring the content.
"Uchiha Nagamasa, Year Seven: The Senju Clan frequently violated the borders and harassed the mines. The Clan Head personally led two hundred clan soldiers and won the battle."
"Uchiha Nagamasa? Year Seven?"
Shisui had never heard of this name, and it was even less likely he would know about events that occurred in the seventh year of his tenure as Clan Head.
However, since Shisui had rarely learned about the family history, he didn't care much about it.
"Uchiha Nagamasa, Year Twelve: The Senju Clan repeatedly obstructed the clan's missions, infuriating the clan, which led to the mobilization of the clan soldiers for an attack. The Uzumaki acted despicably, taking advantage of the situation to launch a sneak attack, resulting in heavy losses for the clan. Although time passed, they did not dare to move their entire force."
"Eh?"
As soon as he read the second paragraph, Shisui curiously asked, "Grandpa, why did it jump directly from Year Seven to Year Twelve? What about the years in between?"
Sima Yi paused his writing, glanced at the books on the floor, and wore a helpless expression. "Finding names is already a rare achievement. They say the Uchiha have a thousand-year legacy, but even piecing together these records doesn't fill a century. Who knows how many gaps there are in between?"
Shisui gave an awkward smile, then set the book down and unrolled a scroll.
With a bang, a puff of white smoke appeared, and a large stack of books materialized.
"Grandpa, here are the records about the various clans you wanted, along with the relevant documents drafted by the Second regarding each department. Additionally, I've sent someone to the capital for the histories of the various countries; they should arrive soon."
"Good, let's set these aside for now. I'll organize them slowly tomorrow."
As he spoke, Sima Yi took the dinner prepared by Shisui. "I've been busy compiling the book these past few days and completely forgot to hire some help."
"Just let me know if you need anything, Grandpa. By the way, here's my savings from these past few years; I'll leave it with you for safekeeping."
Shisui took out another scroll and handed it to Sima Yi.
Sima Yi didn't refuse. Whether it was for compiling the book or recruiting help, or for future actions and the household's operations, money was needed.
"Tomorrow, you can take the book and consult some of the clan elders; they might know something," Sima Yi suggested.
With the framework already completed, once he roughly confirmed the order of these Clan Heads, he could continue to improve the content. As for the lack of historical records, that was hardly a problem.
If there were none here, were there none there? Changing a name or putting a new cover on it posed no psychological pressure for Sima Yi.
"Alright, then. Grandpa, you should eat something and rest early."
Knowing Sima Yi was busy, Shisui didn't press on with more lessons. Instead, he tidied up the desk and left.
After three more days, Sima Yi finally had some free time and set aside the book compilation to look at the documents left from the founding of Konoha.
He spent a full five hours, starting from the morning and continuing into the afternoon.
After he set down the last document, he fell silent. It wasn't until Shisui pushed the door open and entered that he slowly lifted his head.
"Grandpa?"
Shisui, holding a meal, was taken aback upon seeing him. Sima Yi always seemed to have this demeanor whenever he encountered strange matters.
"You came at the right time. Have you seen these documents... the ones related to the Uchiha?"
Shisui shook his head.
"Has anyone in the clan seen them?"
Shisui pondered for a moment before shaking his head again.
"Do you know the detailed authority of the Police Department?"
Shisui continued to shake his head.
With three questions and three unknowns, Sima Yi took a deep breath, stood up, and took the meal from Shisui. With a blank expression, he said, "You stay here and read. Leave only when you're done!"
After saying that, he turned and left without looking back, leaving Shisui stunned in place.
After a long time, Shisui finally widened his eyes.
"Eh?"
