Rai swiftly mastered the Lightning Bolt jutsu and managed to condense its hand signs into a single gesture.
Feeling fatigued from intense training, Rai decided to return to his apartment.
[The next day]
Rai strolled through the bustling streets of Konoha and decided to stop by the Akimichi BBQ spot. Greeting the shop owner warmly, he ordered his favorite teriyaki meal. With a smile, the shop owner acknowledged the order and soon served Rai the bowl. Devouring the delicious teriyaki BBQ, Rai left the spot after finishing his meal.
School was business as usual. After classes, Rai chose to study in the academy library. He selected four books: "History of the Shinobi World," "History of Konohagakure," and "History of the Great Ninja War." While studying, Rai's thoughts turned to his financial challenges. He pondered, "The monthly allowance for all the orphans at the academy isn't sufficient for my ninja lifestyle."
Contemplating ways to accumulate wealth, Rai considered getting a job. An idea sparked – Iō's weapons shop, the one he passed by every day.
With renewed confidence, Rai dashed through the streets, catching the eyes of passersby with his confident smile. Arriving at Iō's weapons shop, he was startled by a sudden explosion followed by an elderly man running out, coughing from the smoke. Rai watched as the man dropped to his knees, devastated by the failure of his creation.
Approaching him was a young individual, around 1.64 meters tall. Rai spoke in a soft voice, "Is this establishment seeking apprentices?"
The old man's eyes gleamed as he got up and grabbed Rai's hands. With a hint of desperation, he asked, "Are you certain? Everyone before you has quit!" Rai eyed the old man, unsure if this small, unassuming figure was truly in charge.
Lō, the old man, was indeed the one in charge, a realization that surprised Rai. Lō appeared small and balding, with grey hair, a slight moustache, and goatee. His attire included gloves, bandages, a high-collared jacket, black trousers, sandals, and a blacksmith's apron adorned with the village symbol.
Rai confirmed his interest, "Yes, I am applying for the job."
Lō's excitement was palpable as he outlined the terms. Rai would earn 350 ryo per week, with the possibility of a pay increase if he stayed longer. Lō examined Rai's appearance and surmised, "You seem to be an academy trainee."
He added, "I'll even provide you with shinobi supplies at no cost."
Without hesitation, Rai accepted the deal. Lō laid out the schedule – Rai would work for four hours every day after school.
Lō introduced Rai to various tools – Tongs, Chisels, and hammers. For the day, Rai's task was simply to hand over the required tool when asked.
Rai observed Lō working on a sword with intricate fuinjutsu patterns that intrigued him. Lō's request for "Tongs" was delivered with a seriousness that Rai found impressive.
As the workday ended, Rai requested, "I need five kunai and 20 feet of wire string."
Lō responded with a touch of jest, "You're trying to empty my pockets, eh? Tsk."
He retrieved the items Rai asked for and handed them over. Rai's face lit up with gratitude as he received his supplies. "Thank you very much," he bowed appreciatively. Lō mockingly responded, "You should be thanking me even more," and his laughter echoed through the shop.
Rai, with a hint of disdain, retorted, "You truly are a shameless old man." Without waiting for a response, Rai left the store promptly.
