Chapter 8: Tension in the Air

Artemis’ POV

Behind me, I hear Baltazar's footsteps as I get out of the car, and I know I have to keep up appearances, so I keep my eyes up and try to control my breathing while Beck’s eyes lock for a moment with mine.

"Owen Becker," Baltazar says, positioning himself next to me. He and Amanita look at Beck with calm smiles on their icy faces. "It's a pleasure to see you again," Baltazar says as he holds out a hand.

"The pleasure is mine," Beck says in a dry, calm tone as he shakes Baltazar's hand. I notice the subtle way he brings his hands back as he nods toward Amanita, and I immediately understand that he is careful not to touch her. How does he know she is a Mystic like us?

"And I see you’ve met Artemis,” he adds, placing his hands on my shoulders. “She is an important member of my pack who has served us faithfully for years."
