Chapter 16: Instincts

Artemis' POV

"No. No more running away."

Beck's voice reaches me across the distance. I head to the side of the elevator, where I see the railings of the emergency stairs, but Beck stops me.

He jumps the distance that separates us and stands in front of me, blocking my exit. I fight him, but desperation does not play in my favor, and he manages to restrain me, catching my wrists with one hand and lifting my body with the other, as if I weighed nothing.

He imprisons me and puts my body against a wall. He lifts my hands, gripping firmly yet gently somehow, and his face comes close to mine.

"Stop running away!" he demands. In his eyes I can see the exasperation. "Stop believing everything they tell you, as if you were so blind as not to see reality for yourself."

"You have no right to judge me!" I hiss, trying to fight him, but mostly my eyes are fixed on his. "Nor can you order me to feel one way or the other."
