The murmurs were endless today as well. The first thing that she had done before stepping out the door was to cover her face with a veil. Though she felt feverish and overall lazy, Beth knew that staying inside was not an option. That was not a luxury that servants like her could afford, and she definitely didn't want another night of overwork.
She took a turn towards the kitchen, where she knew the matron would be at this hour. Servants stared at her at every corner, whispering to each other in surprise. Beth kept her head low and eyes averted from the others. She didn't have the mood or the energy to react to every single one of them. Her new strategy was to avoid the situation.
