Kurnawan

Mandor, Tomb site.

We hid ourselves and our Jeep in the bushes.

The dark night had helped us stay unseen in the bushes.

"Hehe…$30K." Bobby grinned looking at his phone.

The light from his phone shone on his face, making it seem as if his head was floating in the dark night.

He had been looking at his bank account balance whenever there was time to do so.

I rolled my eyes and said: "Bobby, there's more to come, stop doing that like a hentai, you'll expose us."

He wanted to refute me but seeing that Sea Snake Fang was giving him a hard stare, he quickly obeyed and turned off his phone.

Suddenly we heard some loud "Vroom….".

Car engines roared and broke the silence of the night.

Sea Snake Fang waved with palms facing down, signaling everyone to stay put.

These cars might just be passing by.

Just as the lead car nearly zoomed past the patch of clearing for the tomb, it stopped.

The rest of the convoy did the same.

The car engines stopped roaring, and the night went silent again.

There were three cars and out came six men.

They seemed excited, looking around as if searching for something.

Their leader walked around stepping hard on every inch of the clearing, then he stopped and pointed to the spot where he stood, our freshly covered soil from a few days ago.

I squinted hard and looked at the leader carefully.

My eyes adjusted to the dark, then slowly from the dark silhouette to the shape of his face, finally a familiar face emerged.

To my surprise, it was the Snooker Parlor boss!

He must have gotten information from the Bomoh about the red worm.

From that information, that's when he started to follow us.

Bobby realized it was him at about the same time, his face turning red with anger as he wanted to confront the boss.

Sea Snake Fang quickly held him back, whispering to us: "We can handle them later, but let this be a lesson to you."

On an expedition you can never know who will sell you out, or try to cut you; you have to be cautious at all times.

In this case, I was still inexperienced and just went to the Snooker Parlor boss because he was friendly.

These people were what we called opportunity diggers, disorganized and didn't know how to cover their tracks.

Most of the time they either end up dead due to backstabbing or end up rotting in jail until their eventual death.

The party of the Snooker Parlor boss took out shovels and got to work.

Slowly they were about to dig down to the tunnel we had dug earlier.

When all of them disappeared into the tunnel, Sea Snake Fang motioned Kurnawan to follow him.

Yes, they were amateur enough to not have a lookout.

I figured the party of men were just hooligans the Snooker Parlor boss had gathered.

"Let me go too, that bastard, how dare he." I whispered to Sea Snake Fang.

He hesitated for a while, then nodded and said: "Just don't get in our way."

"Come, let's go." Kurnawan smiled as usual and got into the tunnel.

I'd always wondered what Kurnawan's specialty was; Amy Lee wouldn't have him in the team if he was just doing lookout duties.

I was about to find out.

When we reached the area where we had bombed the heck out of the stone wall.

The Snooker Parlor boss's party was busy gathering the worthless vases and coins.

"Siapa kamu? Kenapa kamu di sini?" (Who are you? Why are you here?)

Kurnawan tilted his head, smiled as he drew out two Kerambits (knives shaped like claws) from the pocket of his khaki pants.

All of them laughed at the sight, pointing at Kurnawan, as if they were saying, look at this university student trying to act as a killer.

After a while of sneering, the Snooker Parlor boss had enough and gave his order.

One of the men then came rushing towards Kurnawan swinging his spade.

Kurnawan bent his body, dodging the spade coming from the side.

He then stepped forward, and with a smooth motion across the man's neck, the Kerambit's blade slit the throat of the man.

The man clutched his neck and gasped for air.

Blood kept oozing out of his neck.

The man's eyes stared at Kurnawan in disbelief, wondering how this university student could be such a killing machine.

After a moment of utter shock, the rest of them came at Kurnawan.

Sea Snake Fang joined in from there, his snake-like movement and his palm strikes were too much for the hooligans.

I could see Kurnawan taking them down with precision.

A slice through the thigh, stabbing into the kidneys and his favorite neck slit.

Chills went down my spine when I saw him smiling all the time.

After a few moments, all of them were dead.

It was then that I realized there was no way back for me.

The door to a normal life had been closed.

We all paid our price years later; there's no running away from justice.

Kurnawan wiped the blood off his Kerambits with the cloth of one of the deceased.

He then went up to inform Amy and the rest that the coast was clear.

Amy Lee, Firecracker Tan and Bobby came down moments later.

When Bobby saw all the dead men, he started to throw up uncontrollably.

Even though he was always involved with unsavory characters, killing a party of 6 men was not something he had seen before.

With his body half bent, I patted him on his back trying to soothe him, "Bobby, I didn't know this would happen. I'm sorry to bring you into this."

"Did you…?" He looked at me warily, hoping for an answer.

"No, I didn't do anything. Kurnawan and Sea Snake Fang did."

Upon hearing my answer, he took some deep breaths, took out a cigarette, lit it and smoked to calm himself.

"Good, now let's go for the money!" He put his hands across my shoulders, reminding me what we were here for.

Yes, money.

Nothing else matters.
