Crash
I grit my teeth and take a step, then stop again. I have no idea what to do. They seem to be having a moment and I feel like I shouldn't intrude. But then Kelly turns and looks for me. Her eyes are bright—near tears—but she's smiling. Until she sees my face. Then her smile fades slowly like I sucked it away from her.
I shove my hands in my pockets and try to make my face look happy. I don't think I succeed. She looks very uncertain.
"Is that him?" I ask lamely. Because, did I think she maybe found a spare baby laying in the living room.
She nods. "Do you want to meet him?"
"Sure." But something in me pulls away, that's the truth. I've never had this feeling before—like I might get hurt if I look at him. Like my body doesn't want to be close to him. But also drawn in, like there's some kind of magic here.
