A False Start

They continue their lunch together until the bell rings. "I guess it's time for our next class," Emily says as she gets up and throws her food away. "I guess it is. What is your next class?" Kaine asks. "Oh, I have science," Emily says. "Cool. See you there, I guess." Kaine responds in his favorite neutral expression before getting up and speeding off towards the hall, passing the janitors, who come in to see Emily standing by herself and the hole in the wall's tile next to her.

She walks into class and picks seats right next to Kaine, who is sitting in the back. The course goes by in an instant for Emily, who's focused on her new friend and first crush the whole time. She sees so much in him and has feelings that she can't explain, nor has she ever felt before, even though he doesn't express any for her.

As class ends, she stands up and looks at Kaine. "Well, do we have any other classes together?" Emily asks, hoping that they could spend the rest of the day together. "My next classes are P.E., Music, and Math." Emily sighs. "Oh, that's a shame I had those early." Kaine stands up and stares expressionless for a moment, then says: "I could walk you home." Emily, inside her mind, screeches at the opportunity, but on the outside, she just blushes and says: "That'd be nice."

The bell rings and ends the day of school. Emily excitedly gets up, walks out to the front of the building, and waits under a tree. While she sits there and sketches, a boy falls out of the tree above her. He lands on his back and looks up at her, his olive tone face stuck in a nervous yet mischievous smile. "It's not what you think." He says as he jogs away and disappears into the crowd of kids walking home.

Emily hears a familiar sound, a whoosh in the air, and standing next to her is Kaine. "Are you ready to walk home?" He asks. Emily gets up and brushes off the leaves and grass that had blown onto her because of the gust his speed created and looks excitedly at him. "Of course!" She says with a grin. "Would you like for me to carry you, or do you want to hang on to me?" He says, keeping the neutral tone. "Would I like to what?" Emily says, quite confused and concerned. Without a second thought, Kaine picks her up and looks at her. "If you haven't noticed, I'm really fast, and I can take you home quickly, seeing as how we're neighbors." Emily blushes after feeling cold metal on her thigh and says: "Your hand is, uh, under my skirt." Kaine blushes with embarrassment and moves it to a different position. "Hang on!" He says with a smirk before bolting away at a pace that would make a superhero jealous.

Emily holds on to Kaine tightly as they zip through the air with great speed. They arrive at Emily's house in less than three minutes, cutting the walk time by nearly ten minutes. Emily slides off of Kaine's arms and onto the ground. She staggers as she regains her balance, then fixes her hair and looks at Kaine with exhilaration. "That was awesome!" She says, taking a deep breath and exhaling steadily. "Agreed. It was fun." Kaine says before turning to walk in the opposite direction. "Isn't it funny that we live right across the street from each other?" Emily laughs a little bit. "Yeah, it is." He smirks slightly.

Emily turns toward her front door, eager to tell her father what had happened. She hears Kaine walk through his door and closes it. Emily starts to walk in but notices the cracked door. Curious, she walks in slowly. "Dad?" She asks as she steps into an empty house. There's nothing out of the ordinary. There were no tables flipped over, no papers scattered. "He probably just went to grab the mail and forgot to shut the door." She says, trying to reason before jumping to conclusions.

She walks down the steps to the basement with caution. She pokes her head around the corner to see her father slumped over, his head lying on the desk. "Dad, did you fall asleep again?" Emily says with amusement in her voice. No response. She walks over and sees some red liquid on some of the papers. "Did your red pen explode?" She says with no response again.

She gets closer, standing over him now, and sees a hole through his head. Her eyes widen as she realizes what it meant, and she runs upstairs to her room. She starts to cry and looks around her room, looking under her pillow, and finds it. Kaine goes outside of his house and hears a bang. He zips into the place through the living room window, shattering it. He immediately runs to Emily's room. "You better not have done what I think you did." He says as he opens her door. He sees her body lying limp in the corner with blood splattered on the wall. He takes a deep robotic breath and calmly says: "Loop."
