After Emery finished having lunch with Marcus, her brother's driver reached the mansion to pick her up. She then bid goodbye to her fiance and left for the company while Marcus returned home.
The ride from her family mansion to the company took around 45 minutes. Throughout the ride, Emery glanced at the outdoors through the rolled-up windows. The fact that she forgot all these places made her feel downhearted. However, just like her brother and father said, she believed that she will become familiar with them again soon.
The country where they lived, Esparia, was one of the largest and wealthiest countries in Europe. Her family lived in the capital state, Naviles, which was a bit larger than their neighboring and second-largest state, Avilona. Both Hayes Group and Pierre Group were among the top 5 corporations in Esparia.
Once they reached the company's main building which was also the Headquarters of Hayes Group, the driver pulled over the car and helped Emily settle on the wheelchair. From there on, her brother's secretary was waiting for her and she was taken up to the second-highest floor where her brother's office was located.
Vice-Chairman Jason Hayes was pretty busy with the paperwork. However, he quickly put away the files when his sister arrived. Then he rose from his seat and approached her with a smile.
"How is the ride, Emery?" He quickly asked when he stood just a step away from her.
"I think I live in a beautiful state," Emery responded, making her brother laugh.
"I don't think I'll be able to get used to the new you," Jason Hayes remarked with a peal of laughter. "Before the accident, you always complain, saying that Naviles is a noisy state."
"But it's the capital state and the buzziest one among the states. Isn't that normal?" Emery Hayes asked, confused.
"That's what I always told you," Jason sighed. "But you never stop complaining."
Emery narrowed her eyes, thinking of what her brother told her. "Seems like I was quite a brat before I lost my memory," she muttered in a low voice.
Jason nodded. "Kind of. But it's fine. You might act all spoiled but you have a kind heart. People always look up to you for that."
When Emery kept on pressing her fingers together without saying anything, Jason crouched down beside her wheelchair. "What's wrong?" He asked her in his usual calm and comforting voice.
"I don't even know what I was like," Emery Hayes muttered and met her brother's concerned gaze. "How will I behave?"
Jason Hayes forced a smile and held Emery's hands that the latter kept on nervously pressing together. "You don't have to care about that. Just think of it as a new life and act as your heart told you. I don't care even if you changed a lot. As long as you're my sister... I'm just glad enough that you are still here with me and Dad."
Thinking of the tormenting week when she disappeared and another two weeks when she was in a coma, Jason Hayes added, "I don't want to be in danger of losing you again, Emery. So, don't worry about anything else and just live the way you want. I will always have your back."
Emery narrowed her eyes at her brother's hands that were holding onto hers. Then she flashed a smile and remarked, "I'm so glad to have a reliable older brother like you."
Hearing this, Jason Hayes sighed and shook his head. In the past, she always told him to get lost rather than say that!
"I think I will also need time to adjust," he said and burst out into laughter. Then he stood up.
"Come, I will show you around the company."
Jason grabbed the handles of his sister's wheelchair and pushed her out of his office. "Did Marcus come?" He asked her.
"Yeah. I explored the mansion and he was my guide," Emery replied with a chuckle. Someone else had to guide her even in her own home!
Jason laughed at her words. "Marcus is aloof but he is a good guy. I also think he takes good care of you. I really didn't expect this."
As of now, the Hayes siblings were in front of the elevator. However, Jason reached for his pocket and frowned.
"I forgot to take my phone with me," he said to Emery. "I expect an important call, so I will return and fetch it from my office. Wait here for just a while. I'll be quick."
Emery nodded and Jason hurried back to his office.
While Emery was waiting for her brother, the elevator door was opened and one dashing brown-haired woman made her way out. Emery sat still, not even looking up to see the woman but when the latter was about to walk past her, she halted her steps and turned towards her.
"You... what are you doing here?!" The brown-haired woman suddenly yelled at Emery, making her startled.
Emery looked up at the woman and with her wiped-out memory, there was no way for her to know who she was. "Do you know me?" She asked, confused.
Much to Emery's surprise, the woman snorted at her, and all at once, she bent down and grabbed her on the clothes! "Feigning ignorance now? Why? Are you ashamed? I thought that you are already dead," the woman said to her with sarcasm and contempt.
The woman's actions and words suddenly made Emery feel a pain in her head!
"Let go," she muttered as she held her head in pain. However, it seemed like the woman had no plan to let go of her. Instead, she sneered at her!
"What do you think you're doing?!"
The woman instantly froze when she heard the voice she was familiar with. She turned to her left and saw Jason Hayes rushing towards them. She immediately retreated her hand and turned to the heir of Hayes Group. "Mr. Hayes."
Ignoring the woman, Jason quickly crouched beside Emery to check on her. "Are you alright? What happened?" He asked. Seeing her holding her head in pain, anxiety surged throughout his body!
Unsure of what to do, he waited for Emery to calm down a bit. Then he stood up to face the woman. This time, he stood before Emery protectively, shielding her from the woman whom he had met once or twice.
"Explain what happened," he demanded in a cold voice. "How dare you harassed my sister!"
