It had been a few hours since Emery Hayes returned to her home and it was almost time for dinner at the moment. Right now, she was in the outdoor lounge, watching her brother who was grilling some meat for her.
Jason was still wearing the same clothes as the time he came to pick her up in the hospital - a white buttoned shirt with no tie, a dark grey waistcoat, and pants of the same color. He folded his sleeves so that they won't get in his way of grilling the meat.
"Jason, what if you stain your clothes with the oil?" Emery asked her brother as her gaze fixated on his sleeve.
Her question made her brother smile. "That won't happen. I often do this, so I'm quite good at it."
"You often did?" Emery raised a brow. "But you can just let the chef do it."
"I know," Jason Hayes said. "But ever since you were young, you love to eat what I cook. Our dad is always busy. So, I often cook for you." He picked up a piece of the meat and added, "This is no exception. We will celebrate your discharge from the hospital with this."
Emery somewhat felt guilty for forgetting such a memory. Won't that be unfair to her brother?
"When will Dad be here?" She asked Jason after a moment, trying to concentrate on other things.
Jason Hayes glanced at his wristwatch and said, "Soon, I think. He promised to join us, so he will be on time. Don't worry."
Emery nodded and Jason smiled at her before he continued grilling the meat.
As Jason Hayes said, their father, Patrick Hayes came home a few minutes later and for the first time since Emery was discharged, the Hayes family had dinner together in the outdoor lounge.
"Emery, do you want to come and visit me in my office tomorrow?" Jason Hayes asked his sister while they were having dinner.
"Your office?" Emery asked with a hint of excitement in her voice. However, when she narrowed her eyes at her leg, her excitement vanished. "I will only burden you with this leg," she murmured.
"Why would you think that way?" Jason argued. "You stayed in the hospital for more than a week. No... adding the time you were in a coma, it's more than three weeks. Rather than being stuck here in the mansion, I think you should work on familiarizing yourself with places you should know," he patiently explained.
"Your brother is right," Patrick Hayes chimed in. "Once you recovered a bit, you can go out often to know our surroundings. You can also visit Marcus's house."
Emery thought about it and realized that her brother was right. "Alright. I will come."
Jason flashed a little smile. "You can come in the afternoon. I will send my driver to pick you up." Seeing her nervous expression made him chuckle. The old Emery Hayes rarely had that look on her face!
"Take it easy, Emery," he assured her. "I will be there with you, so nothing will happen. I only want you to be familiar with the company building. You will come tomorrow and you don't have to come again if you don't like it." He put a piece of the grilled meat on her plate and smiled. "Enjoy."
Her brother's assurance calmed down Emery like always. Finally smiling, she ate the grilled meat that he gave her. Tomorrow onwards, she will have to face the world with no memory from the past and get out of her comfort zone.
She felt scared but... she had to do it sooner or later. So, it would be best to do it soon.
* * *
Her father and brother left for work right after breakfast and Emily found herself alone in the huge mansion. Not exactly alone; there were security guards, servants, and that butler from yesterday. Last night, she learned that his name was Thomas Heath and everyone in the mansion, including her family, called him Mr. Heath. He had been serving her family for more than a decade now.
"Miss Hayes, your father told me to accompany you if you want to look around the mansion. Would you like to do it now?" Mr. Heath asked her when she was alone in the living room.
A middle-aged man who was old enough to be her father was talking to her so formally and somehow, it made Emery uncomfortable. However, she still nodded. "I would love that."
Mr. Heath nodded with a polite smile. However, just when he was about to grab the handles of her wheelchair, Marcus Pierre suddenly appeared in the living room.
Mr. Heath promptly turned to the young man and formed a respectful bow. "Mr. Pierre," he greeted.
Marcus nodded at the butler and turned to his fiancee who looked up at him with a surprised face.
"I thought that you won't come today," she said to him.
Now that the young lady had her fiance to accompany her, the butler bowed and excused himself.
"I will be here until your brother's driver comes," Marcus Pierre said and glanced around. "I heard you talking about looking around the mansion. I've been here countless times, so I think I'm qualified to give you a tour."
Emery chuckled at his choice of words. He's only 22 but... he was too mature for his age!
"Fine then," she simply responded with a nod. "I hope we won't get lost."
Marcus Pierre frowned at her response. "I'm the one who look after you since you woke up. You should place some trust in me," he complained.
Emery suppressed a laughter. His upset face was really something! Seemed like he wasn't just an ice block.
For an hour, all the two did was explore the interior and exterior of the mansion. Garden in the theme of a park, a tennis court, a bar, a gym, a spa, and even a small movie theater. There was also a helipad and a swimming pool on the rooftop of the mansion and Marcus brought her there too.
"From what I heard, you love to swim while your brother loves tennis," Marcus told her when they were on the rooftop. He saw her narrowing her eyes at her injured leg when he talked about swimming.
"My mother said you only need two or three weeks for your leg to heal now," he said. "You can almost walk again. Don't worry about it."
Emery glanced at the swimming pool before she shifted her gaze back to Marcus. "If I struggle in swimming once I recovered, you should help me," she said with a little smile.
Marcus simply nodded. "Sure. That's not hard."
