Amelie
My eyes remained focused on Anna as she dished out food from the pot to serve me. For the past week she was working as a serving maid to me, and I've done nothing to make life a bit easier for her. I didn't particularly have many demands, but somehow I managed to be in need all the time. Perhaps it was tied to being pregnant, or it was a result of my undying hatred for her. It was probably the latter, but no matter how hard I tried to get on her nerves, Anna didn't show one single emotion of anger or frustration.
Instead of feeling accomplished by my childish attempts at being wicked and cruel, I was the one who was left angered and frustrated by how calm and unbothered Anna remained after everything I've put her through this past week.
"You're not eating?" I asked as she served me. My pregnancy wasn't heavy yet, I could still do everything on my own, but thanks to Liam I couldn't even walk without getting assisted.
"I'm not hungry at the moment, I'll have lunch later." Anna answered. "Is there something else you might need?" She asked after she was done serving me.
"Do you still love Liam?"
"Pardon?" Came a sharp return. The question had taken her by surprise, and this was one of the first times I've ever seen her express her emotions so blatantly.
"Do you still love Liam?" I repeated without an ounce of shame or remorse. Ever since I discovered that Liam had been married to Anna after our divorce, I've been meaning to ask her this question. To me it was impossible to spend so much time with your ex and not end up developing feelings for them once again. I mean look at me and Liam right now, I wasn't exactly sure of his feelings, but I was definitely sure of mine. You had to have a serious level of self discipline to not fall in love with Liam Hardwood.
Her once soft and emotionless eyes faded and was replaced with a confused one. I could imagine the many thoughts that were coursing through her mind right now while she struggled to give me an answer that would be decent and not awkward in any manner.
How long we stood just watching each other, I had no idea. All I knew was that on several occasions Anna tried to speak but her vocal cords failed. Her lips fell open a good amount of times yet no words came from them. It took a while before she finally gave me a response, one that I didn't believe at all.
"No, I'm not in love with Liam."
It was awkward, the silence that followed up after she answered me. I wanted to throw more questions at her, but I knew that would only make things weirder, however I was too invested in what she had with Liam to think about awkwardness.
"Back then, what you had with him, was it real?" I asked, leaning in a little to get a better hearing at what she had to say. Her voice was really soft, and in these situations was barely a whisper.
"Is there any reason behind these questions?" Anna returned, a question I had not anticipated at all. All the pampering must have gotten to my head, because it had made me forget that Anna was not my servant and had the right to ask me questions too.
"Absolutely not, I just feel like I don't know anything about you. If we're going to be staying this close for nine months, we might as well get to know each other better, don't you think?"
She was hesitant, but she managed to play along with my 'question and answer' game.
"I don't think so, I might have loved him, but Liam never really reciprocated those feelings." Her face was lowered as she spoke, indicating some feeling of regret or embarrassment for herself. Slowly she lifted her face and turned to me before asking, "What about you, do you still love him or do you want to help him with his goal?"
Again, another question I had not expected. This lady was good, she knew exactly what to ask and put pressure on me. If I hadn't initiated this Q and A session, I might actually think she was out to get me.
"What do you think? Do I look like I still love him?"
"You have a Vendetta against Casmir don't you? You'll definitely gain from his downfall, and getting back together with Liam would be beneficial to you too. I really can't tell your plans apart, you're just that mysterious.."
'Lies!!!' I screamed mentally. She was leading me on and it was obvious. She knew the exact answers to that question, but she didn't want to push my relationship with Liam towards a romantic view. It could only mean she was interested in Liam, it might not be romantically, but she definitely wanted something from him.
Her answer also showed that she knew a lot about my past with Liam and Casmir, she was definitely well informed.
"You know quite a lot about me, don't you?"
"Liam talks a lot when he's drunk. All you have to do is just ask him and he'll spill everything.." She answered with a mild chuckle, one that I considered suspicious. "...he spoke a lot about you when we were married, I think he still lo—"
"You two seem to be getting along well." Anna was cut off by Liam's sudden entrance. He has been coming back from work earlier than usual just to spend more time with me. It was definitely because of the baby, but it did feel nice to sleep under the comfort of his muscles and warmth.
Anna smiled at his remark before excusing herself and leaving us to ourselves.
"You asked her about our marriage, didn't you?" Liam accused the moment Anna was out of earshot. He was definitely fast to point fingers at me at every slightest inconvenience.
"You won't say anything about it, so I decided to get it out of her instead." I replied without looking his way. It took two long strides to cross the distance between us, and another gentle pull to have me melting into his arms.
"I told you not to bother yourself with Anna, there's nothing going on with us." He reassured me with a kiss on my forehead. I could believe Liam, but I couldn't say the same for Anna. I was a woman and I understood just how much love can affect somebody, especially the women. Liam might not have loved her back, but Anna definitely had something for him, and it feels as though those feelings were rekindling once again.
"What about us, is there something between us?" His fingers froze on my cheek, and his warm breath ceased for a while.
"Don't do this right now Amelie." He cautioned.
"You didn't answer the question"
"If I said there was something between us would you be satisfied?"
"It depends, do you mean it, or are you saying it because you have to."
"You're being difficult right now Amelie, let's just enjoy the afternoon without having to scold each other."
I didn't reply, I merely got comfortable in his arms, and before I knew it was fast asleep. Overthinking was not good for a pregnant woman.
