Chapter 5 - Matilda's Letter

Carla sat on her bed, thinking about the story Matilda told her about the Mysterious Boy and the man who cured the dying flower. She was convinced that Matilda's mind was playing some sort of trick on her and whatever she saw was complete nonsense, but Matilda thought otherwise. "I'm serious, Carla. No one seemed to have seen the man but I saw everything. He was mouthing a few words to himself and light just slipped out of his hand, curing the flower." Matilda paced back and forth in Carla's room, convincing herself that she wasn't crazy.

Then, she remembered the random white creature she saw on her windowsill. She quickly sat next to Carla and blurted, "There was even a random creature on my window when I first moved here. At first, I thought it was a lizard or an iguana but it had small white wings and I somehow felt connected to it."

Carla stood up as she brought a finger to her chin, caressing it. "You know, I saw something similar." She mutters.

"Really?"

"No."

Spirit crushed, Matilda, slouched back onto the bed. Carla chuckled as she placed her hand on her shoulder. "I think you're being a little too hard on yourself, trying to prove something that doesn't exist. The boy was probably running and it was likely that you were tired from walking so much, you imagined the guy curing a flower." Matilda didn't feel convinced but she thought it was better to pretend that she was right. "I guess you're right." She murmurs, rubbing her palms on her pants.

I must warn them.

Matilda turned to see Carla on her phone, not speaking. "Warn them about what?" She asked, watching Carla shoot her a concerned look. "It feels like I'm always hearing people talk when they're not," Matilda sounded annoyed, "My hearing aids probably needs to get checked." She looks at her phone to see that her dad was almost home, so she got up to leave. Shortly after Matilda had closed Carla's door, she heard her small voice from the other side.

"Bria, why would you suggest Matilda check out the bookstore?"

"No, you don't understand. What if Matilda isn't what we thought she was? You would've exposed a secret to a Median!"

Matilda's heart shattered but her mind was confused. What was the bookstore? Why was Carla so defensive about Bria suggesting it to her? What was a Median? So many questions were stuck in Matilda's throat that she had to scurry off before she broke down completely.

She didn't stop until she reached her door, where a pile of mail was scattered on the welcome mat. While picking the mail up, she noticed a vintage and old-style envelope with her name and address written in cursive. The envelope wasn't heavy and shimmered when she examined it. Who could possibly send a mail directly to Matilda? She didn't know anyone who would write in cursive or use coffee-brown envelopes. On the other side was closed off by dried wax, stamped on with a picture of a circle and a line in the middle.

She was confused, curious but most importantly, angry. Angry at how uneventful the day had been and now, this envelope was going to make it worst.

She took a seat on the couch and opened the envelope, pulling out a brown piece of paper.

Moxarth School of Magic

Headmistress Orae

Dear Matilda,

On behalf of the Moxarth School of Magic, I would like to congratulate you on your acceptance to our beloved and magical family. Term starts on December 23rd and we hope to see you here.

Professor Novrug

School of magic? Matilda didn't apply to any schools, let alone, a magical one. She wondered how they knew her name and her address, but her curiosity was mainly on Professor Novrug and Headmistress Orae. Without another thought, Matilda tossed her letter into the garbage and made a mental note to fully disregard it.
