Chapter 34

“I forget they’re not sometimes,” he admitted. “They’ve been…fixtures in my life for so long that it doesn’t seem natural to turn around and not have them there.”

“It’s weird not seeing them hanging around, too.”

Shane frowned. “They didn’t usually play blackjack.”

“No, but Mr. Marshall used to come around and flirt with the old ladies playing on the slots by us. They loved him.”

“I don’t remember ever seeing that.”

“Really? Because he knew you were there. He used to watch you.”

Shane hadn’t known any of this. It made no sense for Lucky to watch from the sidelines and not tell Shane he was there. It made even less sense for Shane not to be aware of Lucky’s presence.

“You saw him the night of the accident, didn’t you?”

Alona’s innocent question stung more than it should. He tried desperately not to think of that night; both he and Lucky had behaved badly.

“Yes. Not for long, though.”

“That could be why you’re still so focused on it. You didn’t get a chance to say good bye.”
