Chapter 21

“You know Stella doesn’t blame you for what happened,” he said instead. “She loves you.”

“Her forgiveness doesn’t change anything. She was the most vibrant person…” The glass still hovered, the dark liquid swirling around slowly. “Maybe you should go in and lie down. You’ve got bags under your eyes.”

“No.” He reached forward and grasped the glass, his heart skipping at the definite feel of Lucky’s fingers beneath his. Together, they guided it back down to the table. “I’m not leaving you. Not like this.”

“Why? What do you think I’m going to do? Go on a bender?”

“I don’t think you’re going to do anything. But what kind of friend would I be if I walked away when you’re feeling like this?”

“I think I just feel like a ghost. And sober. A sober fucking ghost.” Lucky seemed to be sitting closer, but it was difficult to tell.

Shane smiled. “Ah, so that explains it. You always get grouchy when you’re sober.”
