With my eyes fluttering from the paper in front me to the clock on the wall, frustrated because I'm hungry and still on edge about that phone call I received on Adian's phone last night.
The voice, that still haunts me. That familiar voice, but as usual, no one would say anything because I am breakable.
Angrily wrapping the document in a ball, I flung it upwards at the clock, catching Gerard off guard, when the paper bounced off the wall hitting his ear.
Rolling my chair backwards, I smiled apologetically as I ran on bare feet, for the paper ball before Caleb comes in and see what I've done to his hard work.
"Oh my gosh, I'm so sorry" I reached for the paper ball, my eyes on the door. "Caleb will scream my head off if he sees this," I said while unwrapping the paper ball as neatly as I can.
"You have a problem with the clock or me?" Gerard suddenly breaks my concentration.
Lifting my eyes to see his eyes on the clock. "The clock" I grimace, before focusing on the paper in my hand.
"Good to know," Gerard chuckles dryly, as I trot across to my desk, spinning in my chair, unwrapping the document.
Sitting down on a chair in front of me, Caleb placed some files on my desk, "these need signing off now. I have Mr. Prescott's notes and signatures on the agreement with these clients. You can double check instead of just taking my word for it." Caleb winks playfully at me, before standing up.
"Anyway, I'm off to lunch, well actually Mel and I are off to lunch, would you be joining us or do we bring something back for you?" Caleb offers while my eyes automatically flew to the clock on the wall, again.
"Adian's very late and I am hungry," I mummer to myself.
Smiling, I nod.
"Gerard, we're hungry and I need something at the store," I was saying when Gerard immediately stood up. "Let me go to the bathroom and we'll meet you guys in the lobby." I suggested.
"Works for me" Caleb sings, walking out of my office, leaving me to hustle, as I try to eliminate thoughts of Adian from my mind, upset that he stood me up.
But for whom? The mysterious caller from last night?
Gerard escorted me to the lobby where Caleb and Mel were already waiting, laughing and giggling.
"They seem to be extremely excited for lunch don't you think?" I whispered to Gerard, as we approached them.
Mel grabbed me around the shoulders and pulled me in for a hug, "you will not believe what just happened to me," Mel says excitedly, her eyes twinkling mischievously.
Excited for whatever she's excited about, "so tell me, I need something to laugh about too," I chuckle softly, even though I'm in the dark about what just happened to her.
"I fell" she laughs loudly, pointing behind us. "Over there." She continues laughing while I frown and saw Gerard frowning at her with concern.
Facing her, my laughter disappearing, "are you okay?" I asked, frowning "Basil will never forgive me if something happens to you on my watch," I told her seriously.
"Or me" Gerard muttered, staring at her with a look of dismay before turning to me. "I'll meet you all out front" he mutters, "remain right here" Gerard warns nodding to a security on the side of us, before walking away, heading towards the elevators to get the car from downstairs.
Angry because Adian stood me up, even though he's still got security all over me, I turned to Caleb.
"Okay, let's go" I said walking ahead of Caleb, arm in arm with Mel, out of the lobby and unto the sidewalk.
Confusion masked Caleb's face, as he looks in the direction where Gerard went.
"Are we leaving without your security?" Caleb blurts out.
I glared at him, annoyed.
"I'm just saying" Caleb continues, "if your husband gets wind of this, your security there," Caleb points to the elevator, "loses his job this time." He explains and that jolts me.
Stopping in my tracks, because I can't afford for Gerard to lose his job because of my pettiness.
Smiling in embarrassment at Caleb, "I'm sorry i wasn't thinking" I apologized to him.
"I have no idea where your husband is, but if he stood you up, it's something important," Caleb assures me, "because you, your baby and Emmy are his life now." Caleb smiles, encouragingly.
"Emmy?" I asked, wondering what Caleb means.
Mel and I wait for him to explain, while he looks around us flustered.
"Ma'am, your driver is out front," a security approaches us and smiling in relief, Caleb leaves us with the security to escort Mel and I to the vehicle.
"Thank you," Mel and said simultaneously to the security as he shuts the back door of the black SUV for us, while Caleb was already buckled and settled into the front seat.
Mel leans forward and slaps the back of Caleb's head, "okay mister why did you just run at the mention of Emmy's name?" She glares at him when he turned around with a scowl on his face, while rubbing his head where she just slapped him.
"What the hell is wrong with you?" He yelled in the confines of the vehicle. "Geez, now I'm so sorry for stopping your fall." He mutters.
As Mel remembers what just happened out in the lobby, a remorseful expression crossed face.
"Sorry" she responded apologetically to Caleb, but she was still intrigued about his reason for running when Emmy's name was mentioned.
Smiling at me, "sorry" she mouths, nodding at the back of Caleb head.
Since Caleb organized our lunch outing, I left him to give Gerard instructions on our destination, frowning at the high end restaurant he chose.
Snuggling into the seat, "hmm the boss give you a pay increase?" Mel said observantly.
"My boss is the best"
