Chapter Two Hundred and Forty One - Confronting Chubbs!

Sitting in Gerard's SUV, watching Bas and Hailey stand in line during the afternoon rush of after school pickups.

"You're joining them?" Gerard chuckles as the burning afternoon sun, beats down on the uncovered area of the school grounds.

Weighing in the cost of remaining in the coolness of the SUV and the heat on the outside, "nah, here's just fine," chuckling, I snuggle down into my seat, closing my eyes because Bas knows I'll be picking Hailey and Emmy up, while he returns for his girl and dad.

"Oh, oh," Gerard snorts from beside me, alerting me of a problem because of his tone.

Sitting upright, "what?" I asked staring out into the school yard.

"Chubbs," I whispered to myself, remembering the last time she approached my wife on this very compound and what transpired.

"You would think life's getting better but you continue to make it worse" I heard Chubbs laugh as she insults Hailey, unaware that I was already close by.

Bas moved in front of my sister, "Chubbs," he tried to get her attention but she turned and scuffed at him, focusing her attention and rage at a sullen looking Hailey once again.

"This entire day has been an embarrassment," she continued, "all because of you," she yells as Bas tries to interrupt once again, Hailey puts out a hand and stops him, lifting her chin, allowing my sister to continue her rant.

"My foolish brother is stupidly smitten with you for one thing and one thing only," shocked to hear my sister's description of me. "And when he dumps you and that.." pointing her hand towards the Elementary School's entrance, "orphan," curling her lips in disgust, "he'll return of the girl he actually loves, Kristin whose already making plans for their future," she laughs turning away, freezing on the spot, her laughter dying an instant death, when her eyes met mines.

"AD," laughing awkwardly, she looks behind her, where only Hailey appeared surprised to see me. "I... I.." stammering she tired to speak but nothing came out of her mouth.

She's a smart girl and would know, anything she says would cause more damage than good, because this time, I wasn't given an account of her meeting with Hailey, this time I heard.

"If you know what's good for you, leave," I whispered softly, through clenched teeth unwilling to add more drama to the scene Chubbs just created.

Rushing towards me, "you don't know how embarrassing it's been all day, having to hear comments about my sister-in-law and the way she disrespected our family by her actions on Saturday." Chubbs grabbed me, her fake cries lost because of the cold hatred in her eyes.

Unwilling to make a spectacle of our family in public, other than what my sister has already done but I couldn't resist the opportunity, to test her.

"What family," I whispered leaning downwards, "the Knights family or the Sullivan's family?" lifting my head, I responded to her shock and soft gasp, with a side smirk.

Eying her face that's suddenly gone pale, "make this the last time you approach my family or even utter their names in your mouth, Ms. Sullivan." Releasing her arm harshly, as if it burns, I nod to Bas and Hailey who now stood with Emmy at her side, looking on nervously.

With an arm around Hailey's and holding Emmy's hand with the other, I walked towards Gerard's SUV, where he already stood with the door open, for Hailey and Emmy.

"AD!" I ignored my sister calling me and continue walking, without turning around.

"Adian, please," she shouts but if my sister wants me in her life, she's got to change her mindset about Hailey and Emmy, especially with her birth father, who'll soon become a part of our life.

The drive home was in silence, as I pondered on my sister's response to me calling her, Ms. Sullivan.

Would she make David choose between herself and Hailey?

I'm sure, David's love for Hailey and the hard life she's lived because of his choices, tips the scale between his two daughters.

Hailey's miscarriage also broke him and what makes it worse, is my mother's involvement and decisions that caused it.

"Daddy?" I felt a hand on my shoulder, before I heard Emmy's sweet soft voice breathing in my ear.

Turning slightly, "hey," I responded, my eyes flickering from hers to Hailey, who sat staring out the window.

Smiling brightly now that she's got my attention, "mommy promised to take me grocery shopping," Emmy says confidently.

I chuckle as Hailey instinctively, tugs at Emmy's school skirt, "Emmy," she squeals blushing, causing Emmy to turn towards her confused.

Still chuckling, I turn to see a smile on Gerard's normally cold emotionless face. "You heard the ladies," I told him watching him change lanes as we head to the one stop supermarket that's now Hailey's favourite shopping spot.

Gerard and I followed the girls as they shop and I smiled as I caught other shoppers staring at the jolly pair, who made shopping fun.

Despite some of the mean comments after my wife defended our daughter on Saturday, I can safely say no one looked on at them with contempt or anger. I was annoyed when I saw some shoppers using their phones to take pics but I'm also aware that I couldn't stop it because they are both public figures now and I cannot keep the paparazzi away from them but I can keep them safe.

Nodding at the girls, Gerard and I approach them and started adding more snacks and drinks in their trolley since that's all they were apparently shopping for.

Gerard place Emmy in the trolley and pushed her through the lanes while Hailey and I laughed and shop, kissed and shopped, hugged and shopped as a family enjoying the perfect end to the first working day of the week.

In front the alcohol section, I picked up a bottle of Hailey's favourite wine.

"I'm good,"
