Chapter 6
Amy woke up with a start. Her head was throbbing, hesitantly, she walked to the bathroom to get a quick bath. A glance at the mirror told her how bad she looked.
With a grasp, she remembered what had happened the day before. She got even more angry when she realized she had fallen to the floor.
Without thinking, she got into the bathtub and filled it with foamy water. She took a thorough bath, in contrast to what she had planned to do earlier.
As soon as she was done wearing her clothes, she heard her phone beep. A glance at it made her reluctant to check the message. What the heck was Larry going to say again? Maybe she get fired for not treating him well when he came to her house. She answered her thoughts.
'Are you still sleeping?' She read the message aloud, with all the disgust she could mutter.
What was his concern with her anyways? What does he want again? Amy thought she should really get to work, maybe demand how she got to the room last night.
The drive to the company was hitch free, grateful Amy got down from the car and stormed angrily to the office. The pleasantries were none of her concern, she was bent on seeing Larry. Ask him as many questions as she could.
'You came late. I should not be here before You'. Larry glanced at his wrist watch.
'That, I guess is not what you are supposed to say when you are meeting someone first thing in the morning'. Amy said, a frown on her face.
'I am not sure we have not seen today. Maybe you have forgotten'. He smirked.
'Where? I am sure you didn't see me. Your eyes must be playing games on you'. Amy waved at her face.
'Well, we are supposed to forget about that, but since you brought it up, I have no choice than to play along'. He walked briskly to the table.
Amy blamed herself for coming thus far, she should have stopped right on track when she started. It sure was going to be embarrassing.
'You are really a bad drinker! I am far better than that'. He made a tsk tsk sound.
'Forget it, you made it compulsory for me to drink it. I wasn't willing to'. Amy pointed out, gave herself the credit of remembering something that might at least save her for the moment, but not until Larry started again.
'I guess you have that. Get ready to follow me out'. He struggled with the drawer, before pulling out a file from it.
'Where are we going?' She frowned, this time her brows made her look more angry than she literally was.
'You have got a fine body in there'. He pointed to her thighs.
'Are you insane?'
'Guess not, I saw a bit of it the other time, more good than it should be, especially for the likes of you'. And what does he mean by the likes of her?
'You didn't see anything did you?' She asked anxiously. Wondering why on earth she should have blacked out at the moment it happened.
'I saw as much as I could, I fed my hungry eyes'. He gave a devilish grin.
At once, Amy felt she would have been very grateful if the earth could open and swallow her. Her face was flustered.
She went after him outside, holding tightly to her bag.
'We are getting late'. Larry whispered to Amy.
'Sure, I am right behind you'.
The car drove fast as soon as they got into it.
'Hello Larry'. A fair woman walked over to Larry as soon as they got down from the car. She held his hand and dragged him in, giggling and looking into his eyes as they walked.
'What a betrayer'. Amy muttered under her breath.
'What do you want here?' Someone demanded as she made to walk in. For the first time in her life, Amy was stopped from getting where she wanted. She pointed at her.
'You really don't know me?'
'I don't. What is special about you?'
'I am Amy Wu'. She almost shouted.
'I am sorry'. He said with a bow.
'Better be'. Amy hissed as she brushed past him. She scanned the place for Larry. When she couldn't find him, she walked slowly, almost in a waltz around, checking for anything that might catch her sight.
'Hello there'. Someone waved in her direction.
She nodded her head, and continued her sight-seeing.
'I am Bruce. You are also here for the conference right?' Larry had not told her about it, how on earth would he decide thy were coming to a conference?
'I am Amy'. She beamed a smile at him.
'I guess we have to find somewhere we can stay'. He corked his head sideways.
'I don't get you…' Amy didn't hide the confusion on her face.
'I mean we should find somewhere we can stay, before everywhere gets filled up. Or, have you found one for yourself?'
'How many days are we supposed to spend here?'
'A week'.
'A week?'
'Yeah. Didn't you check the letter brought to you? How do you pay then?' It was his turn to be confused.
Amy stared at him, wondering what he meant by "pay". Larry would pay for it when she gets to meet him.
'Sorry, my mind was elsewhere'. Amy managed to smile.
'I bet you are worried about something, can you let me into your thoughts?' He bent slightly to look into her eyes. Grey eyes stared into hers.
'Maybe not now, we had better find somewhere before it gets filled up like you have said'. She smiled, almost relaxed that he didn't have blue eyes, of course that would have been the end of their conversation.
'Here?' He asked for the tenth time.
'No, it is kinda fuzzy. I prefer somewhere I can look outside through the window'. Amy said, with a dry smile playing on her lips.
'The third floor would do then'. He smiled. Amy bet he was tired already.
Inside the elevator, two people were there already, a nod towards their direction in greeting got no reply from them. Amy didn't know how it started, she noticed the man wrapped his hand around the woman's waist, placed his lips on hers. That was all she could take, she directed her glance away from them.
Bruce didn't seem bothered by them, there was admiration in his face as he watched them.
At once, Amy wondered if something was wrong with everyone. How could they have no shame and geez. She shook her head.
The elevator soon stopped, and they got out. The other two were still lost in the act.
'Wow. This place feels good'. She said as she stared around.
'I am glad you love it'. He grinned.
'Do you come alone?' She found herself asking Bruce.
'Yes, my secretary has been sick, so I have no choice other than to come alone'.
'So secretaries should follow their Boss here?' She glanced at him.
'Yeah. What about you?'
Amy coughed to avoid the question and started walking again, he ran after her.
'This is the key to your room'. He dangled the key in front of her eyes.
'Thank you'. She smiled, maybe men were now learning to treat her well. But, this would not make anything happen between them, she has got to be like Emily.
She collected the key and opened the door, waved at him before going inside.
The interior was bigger than she had expected. The room was breathtakingly beautiful. The walls are painted a soft pastel blue, accented with white trim. The floors are a warm hardwood, and a large area rug in a faded floral pattern takes up most of the space.
There were two large windows, letting in plenty of natural light and providing a picturesque view of a lush garden outside. The furniture is inviting and comfortable, and a beautiful chandelier hangs from the ceiling, illuminating the space. It was a large room, with plenty of space to move around and plenty of room for activities.
She heard a knock on the door and opened it, Bruce was once again in front of the door.
'Want to grab lunch with me?'
'Yeah, I almost forgot'. She noticed a luggage in his hand, as if reading her thoughts he smiled.
'I will go drip this now so that we can go out together. Mind following me?'
'Not at all'. She locked the door and they both walked to his room, it was the second to hers, there was one room in between them.
Amy remembered she didn't bring any clothes apart from the one she was wearing. She remembered Larry and wondered where he was.
'Let's go'. She signaled as soon as he was done arranging his clothes.
'Was wondering if you can follow me to get some clothes'. She paused and looked at his face.
'Forget it, I will go myself'. She said again, almost ruefully.
'We can go together. If you don't mind'. Amy noticed he said the last sentence carefully.
'I will love it'. She smiled.
He bought out a map from his pocket and pointed to a spot on it.
'It is not far from here, just a few minutes walk'.
'We should walk then'. Amy smiled. At this rate, Amy realized she was going to get a laughing infection- if there was anything like that- if she continued smiling.
'This?' Bruce held up a cloth.
'Let me try it on'. She walked inside and came back moments later.
'Wow! You look like a - a princess'. He covered his mouth in amazement.
'Princess?' She giggled.
He nodded his head.
They were soon done with the clothes and walked to the cashier to pay. The bag was more than Amy anticipated it would be.
They decided to hold it at both ends.
'I should take a picture of us'. He brought out his phone.
She smiled and he took the picture.
'It looks good. What do you think?' He showed the picture to her.
'Yeah. Sure does'.
'How about going to eat now?'
'That sounds nice, I am burning with hunger'. She giggled.
'I have a kid sister who looks just like you'.
'Like me?' She pointed to her face.
'Not like you, who behaves like you do. Your smile reminds me of her'.
'She doesn't stay with you?' She asked curiously.
'Yeah, she stays with Dad, they both are on a vacation'.
'This might serve as a vacation to you too'.
'Only that we are here to learn'. The truth sank in Amy's brain. How could Larry decide to bring her to come to learn? Without her permission!
Pushing all thoughts aside, Amy ate as much as she could once they got back to the place they were going to stay, she went straight to get room.
'Thanks for today'. She said as soon as they got to her room.
'You are welcome Amy'. He smiled, making his dimples appear.
A call interrupted them, checking the caller, she picked it, and placed the phone on her ear.
'Come outside right away'. The voice at the other end said, almost in a command.
Amy was going to disagree, but he hung up before she could reply. She walked briskly out, after Bruce had left.
'Where have you been? I have been all over the place looking for you'.
'That is your explanation for bringing me here without telling me about this earlier?' She moved closer to him.
'Who is she?' Someone Amy has not noticed questioned Larry, a wink on his face.
'My secretary'. He said flippantly.
'If she works for me, she would be more than my secretary'. The man said again with a smirk.
'She is more than that too, one of my chains of girlfriends'. Larry glanced at him, a warning look on his face.
Without thinking, Amy walked over to him, closing the gap between them and slapped him as hard as she could. Instead of pain in his face, he dragged her closer to himself and hugged her.
'You are going to pay for this bitch'. He said into her ears.
'I wonder if we are here for a conference, or a love show'. Someone said and made a tsk sound.
'It sure is great. My secretary is too ugly for me to come close to her. We really talk, because sometimes I notice a funny smell from her mouth'. A voice Amy tried as much to know its owner said.
She pushed him away and made to go, but Larry dragged her, he didn't stop until they were out of everyone's view.
'You didn't believe what I said earlier, do you?'
'What?'
'You are just my secretary, nothing more. I was only trying to save you from those people. They are bad men'. He said sharply.
'And, who needs your protection? You are more worse than all the men there. Don't you act like you care. Never!' She screamed.
'Your voice is too loud, and I feel you are going to break my eardrum any moment from now'. He said with a dawdle.
'I don't care. All I want is an explanation for what is happening here, now! Who begged you for this. Have I ever mentioned needing training?'
'To be my secretary, you have got to do it, because I cannot stand people who cannot carry out their functions properly beside me'.
'Was that the reason you refused to inform me before now? Not minding how I will feel?'
'This is work Amy, work for crying out loud! You have got to dedicate yourself to it'.
'You are impossible'. Amy tried to find words she could tell him, perhaps tell him to hell, but couldn't bring herself to say it.
'Make sure to take notes, I cannot pay for nothing'.
'Even when I didn't bring anything along?' She demanded angrily.
'I don't care'. He stormed off.
Amy sank on a nearby chair, now she has to be his secretary again. Of all humans, Larry of them all!
