Left-Handed

I took A Disabilities in Literature course when I was an undergraduate student. The purpose of the course was to redefine what disability is and what it isn't. Disability Studies has impacted and inspired me to write a collection of poetry that coincide with Magical Realism, and reveal how the issues that humans and society have created negatively affect others. The poetry relates to culture, stereotypes, gender roles, mental illnesses, family issues, age, and old tales. The collection, "Left-Handed," dives deep into how traditional and modern views and habits scapegoat others into following and believing what is practiced, and how the needs and issues of those affected are ignored. Amphetamine Puppets

Snorting and injecting,

Smoking their lungs out,

Their addictions crave chemicals

Diminishing natural hunger.

Your next meal is their next drink,

Making you drunk even if you aren't buying.

Your favorite dessert is them injecting heroin through the face,

Stretch marks show the craving satisfactions

As cellulite liniments their bones,

a temporary feed;

The addicts' red spots and saggy skin symbolize synthetic botany.

.

Food comforts stomach pains,

Easing mood swings and increasing energy.

Tablets are their remedies;

Numbing all the pain.

Most people can't get food if they don't have enough money,

How will they eat?

Drug addicts can't get drugs if they're short-changed,

How will their bodies miracle away?

Their pill-popping habits overdose their insides,

While you're in the next room, starving.

.

The neighbor chugs, chugs, chugs,

Spending their time getting drunk,

They're either tired or abusive,

While feeding the alcohol.

Their family is affected,

Because the alcoholic is selfish,

And uses their money to continue the addiction,

While they don't save any that will feed the children.

.

Your brother stole two hundred dollars,

Fulfilling his addictions,

While you have your bedroom door closed,

Aggravated because you hate having a younger sibling.

Your older sister parties

Popping ecstasy, her urine stains the club's sinks.

She stumbles down the driveway

After you have fallen asleep;

Her well-being not worrying you

Because she's smart,

And the wise don't pop pills.

.

Your sister falls and starves,

Using drugs and alcohol as her fuel,

Because she's sneaky,

The parents aren't snooping.

She crawls to her room,

And laughs,

Knowing that no one knows that she's a drug addict,

And the family's the puppets.

.

The neighbor's lost their home;

The wife enabled the behavior,

Choosing her husband over what she's created.

Now, the children have been taken,

And the couple can no longer feed their puppets.

The man's clown costume is removed,

And now, a monster is unleashed,

But the wife doesn't care;

Because she loves the man;

One leads to another,

The sister and the man even barter their shares,

And her family is unaware,

That they've become strings,

And move the addicts slowly.
