Testing Theories

School today was usual and nothing too surprising but we now have a club we go to every single day. Me, Mia and Elizabeth have finally found a place where we can all have fun. When we arrived in the club room it seemed like Sylve and Hailey were already preparing for a test.

"Woah you guys are in lab coats." Mia was surprised since she was the first one to enter the room.

"Oh, Mia these aren't lab coats, this is a modern iteration of a mage robe. We're gonna be testing a theory at the Magic Proving Grounds." Sylve replied.

"That's quite neat actually. Since it doesn't look suspicious that you're wearing a modern version of it. Plus it looks like it'll fit in with casual clothes from the looks of it." Elizabeth is amazed by the trench coat the two were wearing.

"Once you guys pass our test for magic we'll give you some soon but for now you guys are our audience." Hailey replied.

After that Sylve opened a door from the clubroom which has a stairway that goes down to the basement from the looks of it. Which is concerning since how does a school have such a place…

"What's with the basement staircase?" Asked Mia.

And there goes my question. Thanks for taking the shot Mia.

"Actually our club is the oldest and the most prominent club in the entire country. The Magic Research Club is famed for having members that became part of the history books as people that paved the world for magic studies.

Until it fell off a few decades and the last remaining members graduated with no status on where they are now. Me and Sylve just got around by inheriting the club from an idea about researching magic. And didn't realize there was a club already about it.

Before you guys came here we learned everything we could as freshmen about this from the leftover archives they have and cleaned up the Proving Grounds by now and it should be okay for us to start testing." Hailey explained this while we're going down the stairs.

"What about the robes? Where did you guys get this?" Asked Mia.

"We found a magic machine that makes magical clothing for us and we just applied some basic magic to make some robes from a special kind of material such as Mythril." Sylve answered.

"Wow there's probably a lot of stuff left behind from our seniors here." Mia replied.

"There's still a lot to uncover from the archives here but right now at the very least we can finally start testing out theories." Sylve sounded excited.

"Alright everyone, welcome to the Magic Proving Grounds." Hailey opens up the doors to the Proving Ground and the place is expansive.

The place is huge in comparison to the school alone. And yet it feels natural to be here, it even has natural sunlight. Must be powered by magic in some way or form.

"Now if you feel weirded out by the sunlight it is because it replicates the sky outside. Through magic we can feel natural sunlight even here in the basement. The replicated sky here is as vast as the real one so we basically have an infinite level of headroom and space here.

So we can go wild here with our theory testing. Sylve, prepare our tools. We'll begin in 10 minutes." Hailey explains some of the weird details of the Proving Ground.

Seems like we're gonna have a demonstration of their magic. Not gonna lie this is the first time seeing someone use magic not against me and someone who didn't master combat like I do. Plus, this is a theory test so it should be something that is out of the ordinary when using magic.

"There's an observation deck over there and we'll communicate over what we're gonna be doing, don't worry you can watch the whole show there safely." Said Sylve as she pointed off the distance where the observation deck was pretty visible.

After being informed about that we headed there as instructed for our own safety. When we arrived the observation deck was bigger than expected. It seemed like this place was supposed to hold more people it seems like.

"How come people abandon such an amazing club." Asked Mia.

"I don't really know about it but I've heard that magic fell out of consideration at one point." Elizabeth replied.

"Most likely when we advanced so much in terms of technology that it became redundant to have mages doing most of the work. I guess that's the result of evolution to find the next big thing." I gave my answer.

"That could be a good reason for why magic fell out, interesting take there, Beatrix." Elizabeth nodded as she sat next to me while Mia sat on the other side of my seat.

Soon after a screen appeared right in front of us with Sylve showing up on the big screen. It's about to begin from the looks of it.

"Everyone, thank you all for coming today for our testing day. The theory that we'll be testing today is a theory we made a few days ago. About Light magic and its offensive capabilities. Since Light magic is known to be a passive type which utilizes pacifistic abilities that may avoid violence at all cost.

But in this test we will be testing if we can justify some violence with Light magic. Testing begins!" Sylve stands back as Hailey starts trying to chant offensive magic on to a target from far away.

"Wait, Light magic? Haven't heard about that type of magic." I questioned while I sat down watching the on-going test.

"I can ask her from the looks of it, there's a microphone here for us to ask questions." Elizabeth suggested as she pointed at the microphone.

"Oh, yeah you should cause she didn't explain to us what Light magic is yesterday." Mia replied.

"Ok here goes nothing." Elizabeth opens the mic.

A short feedback played on the speakers but it settled down quickly enough.

"Um, If I may ask. What is Light magic? Seems like you didn't mention it yesterday." Elizabeth asked over the live feed.

Meanwhile over at Sylve and Hailey…

"Sylve, give me the headset mic." Asked Hailey as she stopped the test mid-way.

"Oh, sure you forgot such an important detail." Sylve reached out the headset mic.

Hailey hastily wears the headset and replies to Elizabeth's question.

"I forgot to tell you guys about the final two types of Magic yesterday. But to be completely honest the final two is more of a complimentary type of magic rather than an important one but without this can lessen the effectiveness of certain spells and abilities.

Let's start with naming the two types. There's Light and Darkness, sounds simple right? Light symbolizes everything good and Darkness symbolizes everything evil. But since we're in the Magic Research Club.

Those details are ignored. We think that Light and Darkness can be interchangeable, that they can be used in whatever we want just with different intentions. Though I have to tell you the general idea of what is the difference between Light and Darkness.

The general idea of it is, Light is mostly seen as people who are more of a pacifist. Those who are righteous to help others most recorded Light type magic users are saints and clerics. Mainly focusing on protecting someone through sheer bravery and sheer selflessness.

Darkness on the other hand is more on the aggressive side. It used to be the partner of Light when people who possessed its power became corrupt and began to use it for evil. Darkness was the one who handled what Light can't do.

Becoming the one who handled violence and chaos to balance out Light's overwhelmingly pacifistic and calm side. And we believe that it still depends on the person using the magic at the end of the day, hence today's theory testing.

I luckily have an affinity for Light magic. So that's why I'm testing the theory that it is dependent on the person using said magic." Hailey finishes off her short discussion by showcasing how much power her Light magic has when used in an offensive attack.

I'm surprised she has that kind of firepower. Just casually showing it to us is a bit reckless. Then again we're all students here and they don't know my background. And they see this as normal but then again it is for academic purposes.

"Thank you for answering the question, Hailey." Elizabeth nodded and was astonished by the showcase and placed back the microphone from where it came from.

Sylve grabs the headset mic from Hailey to finish off the experiment and to give a conclusion.

"That ends today's theory testing. We have concluded that. Yes, it is possible to use Light magic offensively and on a violent result but with a caveat that we've only tested it on non-living targets and the use case against other living beings would still be in a plausible state and with our limited club capabilities will be in suspension for now." Sylve reports the results for today's test.

"With this we conclude today's club meeting, see you guys tomorrow. We'll probably won't return to this place until we have another theory ready for testing." Hailey ended today's meeting and we went home immediately.

We soon split up since we live on different streets. While walking back Exia was waiting outside the apartment complex.

"Loving high school life, Bea?" Asked Exia.

"I know you came here for something. What is it?" I replied.

"Let's discuss this inside shall we?" Exia responds.

Me and Exia enter my apartment room to talk about something…
