Chapter 22 - An Unexpected Ascension

Li Kang was likely the most powerful cultivator without a martial spirit on this side of the continent. The Meridian Crystallization stage was a massive bottleneck that few cultivators, especially in the rural regions, would ever cross. In fact, most clans would only have a handful of these powerful figures, with most common members stuck somewhere between the third stage and peak of the Bone strengthening stage for their entire lives. While a martial spirit would provide an increase in power and many other advantages, it cannot be overstated that breaking through the bone strengthening phase resulted in a huge jump in physical stamina, speed, strength and ki capabilities. It truly was the difference between heaven and earth.

With his current level, few would pose a threat to him and he would be able to travel more safely. Even going back to the Li clan at this point would be possible. As Li Kang considered his next move, he watched the prodigiously sized spirit carp swim in lazy arcs through the spirit pool. Li Kang spoke aloud,

Considering my options, I see two, one quicker but riskier, and another much longer but potentially with more opportunities. I could make the short journey back to the Li clan, and join a caravan of goat herders from there headed north to the steppes. With my newfound strength and cheat items, it is likely that the clan would welcome me back as a genius. However, there is still a chance that the council of elders would double cross me, fearing that they should take me out before I become too powerful. After all, they banished me not so long ago. This route would be the fastest and it would likely take about three weeks to reach the buried cathedral.

Alternatively, I could make the move south instead, and head to the nearest city, Port Nir. Once in the city, there will certainly be a transport gate master at either the alchemist or mages school that could teleport me directly to the buried cathedral. This route would take around two months of travel, although there were sure to be many opportunities to grasp both during the journey and at the city.

Li Kang monologued his options, thinking intensely. Suddenly there was a rumbling deep within the cave. The water formed into waves that crashed against the walls and shook the earth. From deep within the spirit pool a massive carp, beautiful and reflecting the faint light of the spirit pool burst from the water. The majestic fish appeared almost like a dragon as it hung suspended in the air. Its deafening aura seemed to suppress even the cave walls.

LI KANG. The spirit fish boomed. Startled, Li Kang took a step back in disbelief, how was it possible that this spiritual creature could talk? Even in master Guansho's book this occurrence was not referenced as anything more than a myth. This fish must be of immense power! Li Kang went down to one knee, "Master spirit carp, I am Li Kang."

LI KANG, IT IS THANKS TO YOUR SPIRIT CYCLING RUNE THAT I HAVE FINALLY ABSORBED ENOUGH KI TO BREAK INTO THE HEAVENLY REALM STAGE AFTER 600 YEARS. I HAVE ACHIEVED ENLIGHTENMENT AFTER ALL THIS TIME AND I AM IN YOUR DEBT. I FEAR I AM NOT LONG FOR THIS MORTAL COIL, FOR SOON I WILL ASCEND. HOWEVER I MUST LEAVE YOU THIS TOKEN OF MY THANKS.

The ascended spiritual creature disappeared in a beam of white light. In front of Li Kang, a chest materialized. Inside was a gorgeous chainmail shirt, made from the steely golden scales of the ascended spirit carp. Additionally the chest also contained several pills that radiated power.

In a state of disbelief, Li Kang slapped himself to ensure that he wasn't dreaming. Witnessing this incredible wonder of nature lit a spark of passion deep within him.

Back to the Li clan? No chance. Li Kang thought, for the first time, I'm going to experience the world and travel to Port Nir!

Still fired up, Li Kang donned the scaled shirt, gathered the rest of his supplies and set off south. His first stop along the way, the spiritual grove.
