Kiss Me Like Fireworks

"Here, here...I got you little squirrel." Evelyn peeked up, before she could look propely, she was higher above the ground. A tall figure had picked her up, while she continued sobbing, her knees were hurting. It was cold outside, but his arms were warm. Rubbing her eyes she looked at him reluctantly. Wow...Is he the prince of this palace? No wonder he is! there was no other way he would be so handsome. "Did someone hurt you?" the little squirrel shook her head. "Are you lost?" he asked gently caressing the back of her head, Oh! Even his voice was tender, but then Evelyn remembered that she was lost, and tears swelled up once again, "Grandpa, grandma" “Now...now, I will take you to them. Stop crying. Pretty girls don't cry.” “Did the prince just call me pretty?” He looked at her bruised knees, ugh! they were ugly, will the prince hate her now? But instead he wiped her tears tenderly “I will fix it with a magic and the pain will vanish right away." A gentle kiss was planted on her knuckles. Where did the pain go? Evelyn wondered There were fireworks in the sky. Did the prince really do magic? Dubious Drama

This was the third or fourth time perhaps that she had stepped on his feet. They were at the ballroom and all eyes were on them now, as a matter of custom, the new couple needed to have the first dance. Fortunately, she was in Anastasio's care, who was perfect in everything. He was swaying her gracefully across the ballroom, in sync with the lilt of the piano which was being played by the very dashing Nathenel de Magnolia. Susan was sitting right next to him, watching him enthralled.

It was planned ahead that he would be playing the piano, a special token of 'love' for his elder cousin's birthday. But, Nathenel truly was a genius pianist, so once he seeped into the melody the whole made up thing was forgotten, it looked like a real family affair.

Evelyn wasn't someone to make a mistake during this simple dancing, however her mind had trodden back to all that had happened, especially what Manila said once she woke up.

Mahila was in pain as she woke up, her head felt groggy, and she felt nauseous and disoriented. She tried to get up, but that's when she heard Evelyn stop her.

"Stay put, please don't move. How are you feeling Miss Langton?" There was a genuine concern in those kind eyes, too good for this lethal scheming world. Evelyn gestured Julie to leave for sometime. So that Manila could be at ease.

Manila's eyes we're downcast, "Much better than I deserve. I sincerely apologize, I...I...failed as your lady-in-waiting, I had put my family's name down. This engagement was disrupted because of me isn't it? Oh! I feel so ashamed..."

'You must get closer to the Duchess.'

'Do a good job this time.'

'Don't disappoint'

'Do as you are told'

Those words resonated inside her head, the reason why she has been sent, she knew fully well, though she despised serving this lowlife. Crushing her own pride she took. the role, only because she was part of a higher plan which had a higher purpose. She didn't know the details, a mere subordinate must follow what the master orders. Manila did everything immaculately. However, she wasn't made aware of this sudden break in that girl's room. Or, was it some rival group at work. She simply had to disrupt the engagement stating that the ring was lost. That was the instruction. However, she was supposed to hand over the ring to the master. It was a precious heirloom from pure blood-line it had to be saved.

But now it was really stolen, and she didn't know what cost she would have to pay. She tried tried to chase after that thug, but damn this gown she had to trip when she was about to catch that bastard. Instead she got badly injured and now she was facing this hoe.

What if now this rotten girl gets suspicious of her? Definitely her engagement was spoilt she must be so mad now. Atleast now she had an excuse that the ring was stolen by the burglar who broke in. Manila took a deep breath, her pain helped her to look broken she didn't even need to act.

"Please calm down first Miss Langton." It would be problematic if she got too excited, especially when the physician had asked her to rest until she gained some strength.

"I don't know what had happened. But looking at your condition, how can you even say that it's your fault?" She was grave, "On the contrary, it's our fault that we couldn't protect our precious guest."

Manila wished she could laugh, this was the reason why she loved these brainless commoners, their unrefined upbringing always made them gullible. She isn't even asking about the ring. She craved for some spice & drama now.

"But the ring was stolen by the thug. When I stepped into your room to get the ring, I found the door ajar. There was a man and he was trying to escape from the window." She tried to look genuinely fear stricken, and cried covering her face, "I was so so shocked. Chasing him I ran, this ring was the way to your engagement. Oh you poor thing, you didn't even have an heirloom to do it. But, before I could catch that bastard, I tripped on my dress, my head hit on the rock. Then I couldn't recall anything."

Manila noticed Eve's demure, 'Well I am such a convincing actresses, I sure must have left an impact on this moron. That's it, it's enough to convince her, I should stay put for now.Anyhow, I won't be able to report everything for the time being.'

There was absolute silence when Evelyn spoke, "Miss Langton, I am sorry you had to go through something so unfortunate. You took such huge risk considering my disadvantage. It's such a traumatic experience, and I am sure Miss Langton is still in a state of shock, but my lady, why did you have the need to go to my room to fetch the ring? How is a brude supposed to have her own engagement ring?"

A chill went down Manila's spine, she had over done the drama, and now she looks shallow. However, was this girl always this smart? Isn't she just a Baker who ran a shady shack like cafe at the market?

Evelyn smiled smothering her gaze back to the calm and kind one.

"Rest assured the engagement wasn't disrupted at all. Miss Langton must rest and recuperate. The House of Faunoa would take care of you till you get better."

She watched Eve leave and held her breath untill then. 'That wench is scary! But how did they get engaged? Did she have an heirloom to offer? Was that even possible?'

"You are not focussing on your husband? It irks me that you can think about someone else when you are in my arms?" Sio's deep and excessively low whisper, along with the sly movement of his fiery fingers on her bare back, brought her back from the awry interaction with Manila.

'Should I tell him?' but then Eve shook away that idea.'It was just a haunch'

Not at least for the next two days. It's not just his coronation, or their engagement, but his birthday after all. It has been worrisome enough experiencing peculiar things. He already had a lot on his platter. The security was already severe now.

He was still boring his eyes into her. Evelyn didn't wish to disrupt what little was left of this special day.

Eve smiled coyly.

Anastasio was taken aback! "What's with this crafty smile? you already look tantalizing, in this hot red dress, that is giving a benevolent look of your pretty peaks, your slithering back, and your ravishing ass. I am already mad at those leering eyes who are sizing up my wife. So don't you are give me ideas, that I pick you up right now and take you on one of the dark corridors of the palace."

"I was thinking how should I celebrate the Duke's birthday night?" She spoke seductively, yet her face remained innocent.

'He has his eyes only on her' 'A perfect couple with perfect looks' 'I wish my husband would look at me like that'

Evelyn blushed hearing those murmurings.

Inching her closer, as they swept to the concluding part of the music Anastasio murmured, "Are you trying to seduce the devil now? Well you are successful. But a birthday is incomplete without a cake and a gift. I have cut a few of them, but I only enjoy cakes prepared by my cute baker."

"Well Duke, how can I disappoint you?"

The music ended, and the ball room cracked down with applause. "Long Live House of Magnolia. Long Live House of Faunoa." They cheered.

"You look overwrought, you better sit here I would get you drink, after that we are leaving." Anastasio seated her at one comfortable corner, Susan and Nathenel were being pushed to the floor now. The next music was about to begin, a popular romantic number.

A hand approached Eve, "Would the future Duchess mind having a dance with this lowly man?"
