Chapter 29 : The Mikaealson Ball II

As the night continued, Klaus invited Caroline for a walk in the garden.

"I'm glad that you came," he said.

"I see," Caroline replied.

Soon enough, she found herself in front of a pair of horses. Smiling softly, the vampire carefully stood in front of the animals, waiting for the instinctive fear to strike. It took moments before they seemed to understand that she meant them no harm and began to act as if she was not there, outside of the occasional rub against her extended hand.

"You like horses?" Klaus asked.

Caroline internally rolled her eyes, pulling her hand away from the horse. She slowly turned to face a smiling Niklaus Mikaelson, who was making his way over to her. He certainly looked the part of a predator, all dimples and an easy grin, with eyes that spoke of a brilliant mind.

"Klaus, why did you invite me here?" Caroline asked.

Klaus only smiled. "I fancy you. Is that so hard to believe?"

"Yes."

"Why? You're beautiful, you're strong, full of light. I enjoy you."

"Well, don't," Caroline breathed softly as her eyes dipped toward his lips. His hand came up to cup her cheek, causing her to look back into his eyes.

"My apologies. Where is your boyfriend?"

Caroline held her head up high. "I came alone."

"So, you're unspoken for," said Klaus with happiness in his tone. "You know, horses are the opposite of people. They are loyal. My father hunted me for 1000 years, and the closest he ever came was the day he killed my favorite horse. He severed its neck with a sword," Klaus confided, his eyes turning toward her. He wanted to see her reaction; everything about her intrigued him.

"To answer your question, yes, I like horses, but I also like people, and they actually like me. So, I will be inside."

Kol and Rebekah were enjoying drinks when Caroline came inside the ballroom again. They looked at each other and saw that she was coming toward them.

"Rebekah."

"Caroline, you look lovely. That dress—Nik sure knows how to pick a dress. You should thank me," Rebekah said.

Kol laughed while turning his face to the other side.

"Rebekah, can you please leave Matt out of whatever is going to happen tonight?"

"Why do you ask, little light?" Kol inquired, intrigued. Even though he knew about her past relationship, that was a TV show, and this was real life. He was curious about why Caroline was trying to protect that all-American kid who was the only mortal left with a normal life when the dust settled.

"See, Matt has no one looking out for him here. His sister is dead, and Elena only keeps him for emergency backup so if this supernatural stuff doesn't work out, she can go back to Matt, who will always receive her with open arms. So please leave him out of any plans today. I don't want him to get hurt. He already lost his sister and is just coping now."

"No worries, Caroline. I already decided not to involve him."

Meanwhile, after listening to Caroline's rant, Kol was laughing. "Amazing, as I thought. She really is one of the most interesting people in this town."

"Ha, okay, little light. Your friend Matt is safe tonight. Is that fine then?" Kol asked, amused at the whole situation. He, Kol Mikaelson, had gone soft for his friend; otherwise, he was planning to put that kid in the hospital so that he wouldn't get involved in the following mess and try to kill his siblings. In the show, Finn got caught. Who knows what may happen in real life?

With that, Kol left the ladies and looked around and found Bonnie. She really looked beautiful and divine, and the magic—ha, it was intoxicating.

"So, Bonnie, I thought you said you were leaving after the dance," Kol asked cheekily, even though he knew she wouldn't leave her best friend, Elena, here amidst the oldest vampires.

Bonnie was tongue-tied. Before she could reply, Kol continued.

"So, witch, who is your teacher for magic?"

"Huh?"

Bonnie blanked and controlled herself. Then she took a deep breath and replied, "Why are you interested, Kol?"

"Well, I wanted to know if any elderly Bennett witches are available. I want to know how magic progressed in the past 100 years. So, who is your teacher?"

"No, I don't have a teacher. And why are you interested in magic development?" Even she was curious now about why he was asking.

Kol had a pondering look. "So you don't know who I am? And you don't even have a teacher? What is your coven doing isolating you here?"

"Well, I know you're Kol Mikaelson, the original vampire. As for a coven, we don't have one."

"Ha, what have the Bennett witches fallen into? Oh well, that's time doing its tricks, huh. So, have your elders taught you magic? If so, which branch are you specialized in?"

"Wait, there are branches in magic?" Bonnie asked, flabbergasted.

"Of course there are, little witch. Why wouldn't there be? Haven't you been taught anything?"

"No, I only learn through grimoires."

"Wait, so they taught you how to read grimoires but not about magic?"

"Wait, what do you mean about teaching to read grimoires? They can be read all the time."

Kol looked flabbergasted. "Little witch, don't tell me you don't even know what you are reading, do you? You just do surface reading."

Kol let out a mournful sigh. "Listen, little witch, as you are Ayana's descendant, I will educate you. Grimoires are magic users' lifeblood; hence they are always protected and encoded with magic. What you normally read are only the pieces of magic which the person making the grimoire doesn't care about getting out, as it is easy to make those kinds of spells. If you decode them using proper channeling, then you will find real magic."

"She really doesn't know, huh? So, how did you train before then?" Kol asked curiously.

"I..." Bonnie hesitated, then decided she would tell him. "Well, my grandmother told me about magic recently. After that, accidents happened around me whenever there was some kind of incident. Then Damon came for Katherine and forced me to use magic to free the vampires in the tomb, in which my grandma died while closing the tomb."

"Hmm, so you are saying a Bennett witch hasn't gone for revenge against those who harmed her family?" Kol looked at her oddly, and she was weirded out.

"Well, there is one thing after another ever since supernatural events started happening around here."

"So you haven't integrated everything that happened, huh? You should do that whenever you are free because magic is a spiritual journey. If you are not in control, your magic will become more chaotic. I can already feel it; your magic is like the silence before a storm. It's raging and twisting to be let out. Ha, so nostalgic."

Kol took a deep breath and smiled like a child. "Just like a storm," he said, looking deeply into Bonnie's eyes.
