The Experiment

Back in my room, I looked out the window again as I waited for Dr. Grimbane, for some reason Diana's named seemed familiar, maybe she was a friend, I thought.

I sighed, as I let the breeze from outside freshen up my lungs.

"Good, you're awake." A man greeted me as he entered the room.

"Hi, are you Dr. Grimsbane?"

"Yes, I am. I'm sure you have many questions, which I will answer, but first you need to take your medication." His voice was soft which calmed me as I let down my guard.

"Medication.. Why?"

"Now, I said I would answer your questions… after you take them."

I had nothing to lose, so I might take them..

There were 3 containers each unlabelled but about the same size. I took each pill with a sip of water and swallowed them. A tingly feeling went down my throat all the way to my chest, but then disappeared.

"Good." He seemed satisfied.

"Your medication is for your illness. You were born sick, and each time you go to sleep, I have to go through the same process. You have alzheimer. Your mother left you for dead when you were born, and we took care of you. This is a mental hospital, we have other patients. Your name is Jonathan Harrison, you're 17 years old."

"Oh. That's.. Not what I remember.." I had a feeling this man was lying to me, though he seemed very sure about his words.

"What do you remember?" His face distorted in worry.

"Uh.. I.. I had scars, and bruises.. I have 2 brothers and a sister, I was in jail.." That's all I could remember, except for the long lasting dreams I wasn't willing to share.

"I see." He jotted down some notes down on his notebook and nodded. "Have you spoken to any patients?"

"No." I figured I might get Diana in trouble if I told my doctor.

"Right. Well those memories you have might be some side effects of your medication.. Some other illness.. I'll have to investigate. Now I have a couple questions for you."

"Sure."

"Have you seen or heard anything weird, maybe abnormal. Perhaps in your dreams?"

"No, sir" I tried to focus my gace on the door so I wouldn't have to look at the doctor's face.

"How have you been feeling lately?"

"A little confused I guess."

"Yes, of course, but mentally? Any suicidal, or self harm thoughts?

"Umm, no sir." Why would I want to harm myself?

"Great. You've been eating well, been sleeping well, at this pace we'll get you to your final test and transfer you to the orphanage, until you turn 18."

"Sir, could you explain a little more about that?"

"Sadly no, I need to keep you from leaking information. You'll be out of here soon though, be patient."

"Okay." This was all very weird and suspicious to me, somehow I had to find out what they were up to.

"Right. If there are no more questions then I'll ask you to follow me so we can do some tests on that little concern of yours. We have to check for any other emerging illnesses before sending you out."

I nodded, stood up and followed him down the hall. The hall was silent though it seemed crowded, there were more people than before now, though they walked silently like zombies, not knowing where to go.

"This way." He stretched his arm to the left showing me to turn and followed after me.

"So how long have I been here for, doc?" I tried to get as much information as I could.

"16 years, we found you when you were 1, you were drinking from a river. Impressive right? You managed to survive about 4 months alone in the street. Ever since you got here, you always scored perfectly in our IQ tests, eben though you never seemed to remember anything. It's like you're some sort of machine."

"Right.." We stopped at room, and as I entered, I regretted being caught off guard. There were 2 armed soldiers with chains on their hands, who greeted me with furious faces. They went for me and tied me down, threatening to kill me if I didnt cooperate. They pushed me into a chair, and tied me to it.

"Sadly, you're a threat for us Mathiass. But it's the same process every time, dont worry."

Mathias sounded a lot more like my name, I thought.

"Even with our medication you always seem to threat us, we've erases your memory, we've changed your body, your story, everything

Isn't this what you wanted? A better life? Your brother was very nice to have you as our primary subject, but you're making this harder than it should be."

I stood silent, as the memories started flushing back in my mind.

"So this is all a fachard? What about those Nazis? You really tried to have me believe I was in some other year? 1924.. What about that girl with my mom's namez what was the point of that?"

Dr. Grimsbane laughed as he responded. "It's all part of the experiment, Matt".

He walked down to a nearby counter and grabbed a mask. It was shaped like one of the gas masks they used back in Germany, to avoid getting intoxicated.

"Stop resisting, or we'll have to cut you down piece by piece, and re-create you." His voice was a lot deeper and hard to understand under that mask.

The other soldiers left the room leaving me alone with the doctor. He pulled down a lever and waited patiently as a purple gas filled the room.

I tried to hold my breath, tried to get out of the chains that tied me down to the chair, but it wasn't enough. I felt dizzy, but I didn't pass out, my head was just spinning.

From the door, arrived a very familiar face, and greeted me. I wasn't able to hear but I was able to enjoy seeing Collem's face again. I was happy enough that I stopped resisting and cherished the fact I was able to escape my death once again.

Collem talked with Dr. Grimsbane, unbothered by the gas, and then made his way to me.

"Hey brother, we're going to have to take your heart out."

He smiled as he grabbed a knife from the back of his sweater and pounced my chest with it.
