Watching her daughter work filled her with pride. Her phone started ringing, before she looked at it, she caught Peggy jolting from the ring. It was Travis. “I’ll come back to check on you. If you’re tired, don’t spend all night on this okay?” She started to walk away, but waited for an answer. She got a nod in response. For the sake of her ringing phone, that was enough. She hurried out as she answered. “Hey.”
“What’s wrong? Are the kids okay? Did you get a call from Shane? Are you hurt?”
She couldn’t help smiling at Travis’ concern for her. “You’re asking a doctor if she’s hurt?”
“Does that make you invincible?” She chuckled. “What’s wrong Steph? Your message sounded urgent.”
Instead of going to her bedroom, she intended to go back down stairs, head for the backyard. “It is.” She sighed. “I was at work when…”
“Screaming? Why- why was she screaming?” Whatever normal calm he had was replaced with agitation.
“You can imagine how I felt when Bev called me.”
