When Henry saw Rosalind for the first time at the bottom of a hole in the ground. She was seemingly dead and he thought that was as bad as someone could feel.
However, being on the battlefield showed that there were far worse conditions a human could be exposed to.
People he had been working alongside for the past year fell to the ground as blood spilled out of their bodies. There was no time to mourn and no time to help them because the moment you decided to stop your defense, you would be slashed down as well.
Henry made a habit of counting bodies as he moved along, trying to survive and slash down as many monsters as he possibly could. If he could remember how many men were slain then he could be sure they were found when the battle settled and both sides had to retreat for the time being.
However, no matter how many goblins were slain, they seemed to be reproducing or bringing in monsters from further away because their numbers were replenished during each future battle.
