Sudden Development

I watched as my disheveled wife was giving my clueless daughter her breakfast, a slight limp in her step, shooting me glares, blaming me for her current predicament. Ten minutes after our intense work out, Sandra, our daughter, had come down groggy and ready for breakfast. She had almost caught us spooning on the counter had I not acted fast enough, it would have been an awkward breakfast.

"Honey, I was just thinking of what we should do for your project," I said, making Sandra look at me with expectation. "We are going to make a small scaled hydro engine."

"Hy...what?" she didn't understand a word I said.

"You know how our cars use gas to move?" I asked and she nodded. "What we'll be making is an engine that uses water instead of gas."

"That's an ambitious project for one day," Meg, my wife, quipped in.

"Yeah, it might be but it's the only one that will knock Mrs Crouchy Pants bat off," I said, making Sandra stifle and almost laugh out.

"But you'll be announcing to the whole class she didn't make it. How about something less. A volcano perhaps?" Me asked, or rather declared. I knew better than disagree and apparently so did our daughter. "After church, you two can start on your project." I could see the same helplessness I had in my eyes reflected from Sandra's eyes, a fellow comrade. We ate our breakfast in silence then went to prepare ourselves. Had to restrain myself from jumping into the shower once Meg got in. It was hard, but something was harder.

.....

It was a while since I had gone to church in my previous life, It didn't help both templates I had were hardcore atheists. Toji couldn't even be termed hardcore atheists, the man simply believed in himself to a point he worshiped himself. So, I was as out of place as a whore in a baptism. Meg saw my discomfort and like a good wife, subtly guided me through everything. All I was glad of was that this was a white church, the sermons were short and at point. So one hour later, the so called man of god was about to start his sermon and end this farce. The fact that I can smell ass on his breath just made me hate religion even more.

CRASH!

A truck suddenly crashed into the church's walls, mowing down members of the congregation like a lawn mower. It could have gotten us too had I not moved as soon as it had crashed through the wall. I had scooped Sandra and Mel into my arms and dove out of the way.

BOOM!

The truck hit the altar, killing the preacher instantly before stopping after crashing at the wall. I quickly got up as I looked at the direction it came from, my brain soaking in and analysing every information in my line of sight. However, the fact that I could see bloody people running around pouncing on frightened runners made me stare in disbelief.

"Baby, are you alright?" I head Meg ask Sandra, bringing me to the present. Before she could answer, I lifted the littke girl into my arms.

"We need to leave, now!" I said to Meg, clutching her left hand by her elbow and half jogged out of the church through the huge hole in the wall like every other parishioners.

The outside world was chaotic which made me realize I was not paying attention to my surroundings otherwise I would have gotten hold of the situation with my hearing. However, there was even more bad news as our car was gone, probably stolen by someone in all this chaos. I saw some poor son of a bitch fumbling to open his sedan's door and felt pity on him for what I was about to do. I led my family there and before the man could say anything, I had knocked him out, no questions asked. Handing my shocked daughter to my flabbergasted daughter, I took his car keys and unlocked it.

"Get in, now!" I told them, unlocking the doors. Meg didn't need to be told twice, she quickly got in and I switched the engine on and put the pedal to the medal.

I cut through the parking lot, destroying the barrier and got to the main road where I increased the speed as I sped towards home. All the while, I was analysing everything I was seeing and all I could think of was that this was an apocalypse. To be precise, this was a zombie apocalypse!

As if trying to prove me right, a disfigured figure trying to pounce onto the car from the roof of a crushed truck only for me to expertly swerve out of the way and it to slam on the tarmac with a sickening splat. Looking at the rear view mirror, I noticed it was shuffling back to its feet before running off to another direction!

"What's happening?" Meg asked me as she held on to the crying Sandra. I could hear her erratic heartbeat and smell the adrenaline coursingbin her veins. She was scared but still ready to fight for Sandra to keep on loving, I deduced.

"I have no idea but we need to get home and then straight to the panic room," I said, projecting my calmness in my voice, helping them to relax. I saw how she did, slightly before looking outside and her nervousness returned. We can't have that, nervousness lead to mistakes and I cannot have her dying due to it. I will have to make sure she is not affected by the new reality after we reach home.

Taking numerous shortcuts and many close shaves with the undead, we arrived home. The neighborhood was in chaos just as the city which told me we needed to get out of here soon. Berding my family into the house, I locked all the doors and windows, nailing them shut in the process. Then, I took all the food from the pantry and kitchen and took them to the panic room which was downstairs.

The panic room was built by the former me in case of intruders. It helped his parents came from money and they had agreed it was the right choice for that situation. It was finger print locked with a reinforced steel door, twenty inches thick corrugated walls reinforced with steel beams. The room was powered using solar cleverly installed on the roof and an underground tanks of five thousand litres each, MRI and canned food enough to last months for three of them. They were ready for the apocalypse, I realized.

...

"What's going on? What were those things?" Meg asked me as soon as she had soozed Sandra to sleep. Today's excitement had wore her down somewhat.

"I wish I knew honey. Whatever was happening out there just came out of nowhere," I answered her before embracing her tightly. She needed to know I was in control and the best way for now was to comfort huh. It seemed to do the trick for she melted in my arms before she started crying. I didn't speak but continued hugging her, showing her my commitment to her. Once she calmed down, we sat as we discussed what we needed to do.

"First, we are going to need weapons. Most people will think of that so they must be looting weapons store at the moment. The first few days are the golden times to getting fire arms but I know somewhere we can get them in bulk. I'll head out tomorrow and bring a few for us together with any cold weapon I can get,"

"No! I can't watch as you go out there alone! That's suicide and I am not letting Sandra go through that at this time," Meg vehemently refused. To her, him going out there was the same as losing him and she was not ready to do so.

"Babe, this is the only way we come out on top. We cannot simply stay here and hope for the best, not now. We need to be on the move, far away from any populated places because they are the most dangerous at this point. We need to stay safe and let Sandra be safe at the long end!" I tried to convince using emotional blackmail. Meg looked at our sleeping daughter and she became torn. It was my time to strike while the iron is hot.

"I need to do this or our survival is as low as it gets. Trust me, I'm not losing any of you any time soon," I soothed her. Meg broke down again and we spent the rest of the day and night hugging each other.
