Chapter 6

Much to Cato’s surprise, the group reached the forest by the mid-afternoon. As the cold began to creep into the air, wispy tendrils of mist seemed to reach out from between the thick oak columns. Cato’s eyes followed the dirt track they’d been riding as it snaked its way into its dark depths.

Without hesitation Centurion Lingus ordered the men to set up camp and each legionary began with his duties. A few Iceni warriors offered to help. Cato was grateful for this as many of the men had eyed the misty tree line warily.

The rest of the men began by either digging trenches or pitching tents. Cato watched as the legionaries worked with well-trained efficiency. None of them spoke and all knew their task perfectly. As he walked through the campsite, Lingus’ voice was the only one to be heard echoing through the frosty air.
