Field trip!

[A/N: Exams are over, sorry for the delay.]

 Today was a day, every student had been waiting for since its announcement. Either because they were afraid, or because they were looking forward to it.

It was the day of the first field trip of the year, and they knew nearly nothing, only that it was going to be in the forest in their groups, but without their leaders. This meant, three or four first years had to go together. 

Naturally, there would be rewards for the best few groups, like special training, access to some more knowledge, or just small things they wanted, ranging from physical objects to benefits inside the school, like a bigger room, a larger bath, or other stuff you could get for merit, fast progress, or good grades, like Sebastian had gotten before.

At 7:30 o'clock, Sebastian stood with Alexander and Nadine together among the other first years. In the past few months, Sebastian had gotten to know a few of them, either because of a group project, common interests or because the played a few games or read together in the library. But most of the time was still spent with Alexander and Nadine, and fortunately Nadine had warmed up quite a bit towards him, when she realized that Sebastian wasn't an asshole and had no interest in his broader family. Sebastian still remembered their talk two months ago.

After a long day of working out and training, Sebastian, Alexander, and Nadine sat on the ground, huffing because of exhaustion.

"Nadine, tell me honestly, why are you so aggressive towards me?", Sebastian asked, tired of Nadines behaviour. That day, she had mostly focused on him during their 1vs1vs1 training, again.

"That's something you wanna know, huh?", she shot back at Sebastian for completely no reason.

"Yes, that IS something I want to know. I literally did not know you or anything about our family before coming to school.", Sebastian answered patiently, set on finally wanting to know what was going on.

"What? What do you mean you did not know about our family? You clearly somehow practiced our family magic before school and you want me to believe that you, son of squibs, have the skill and guts to be accepted to the advanced German school, like me without any training? That's got to be a joke.", she snorted.

"Yes, I neither knew about the Roth family, nor about any magical skills. I was as new to magic as you were."

"Urgh, really? So you haven't been secretly practicing to be the next lord Roth? We both know that the one with the most skill is going to be chosen and now it is my time. There has never been a female lord Roth before. I-", she broke off, and started to whimper, "I should be the next lord."

Sebastian was stunned. This was what it all was about? "What? NO! I did not know, and I have no aspiration to be the next lord Roth. I did not even know anything about the family before I came to the safe house!"

Since then, Nadine had visibly relaxed around him and sometimes, they could even joke around together.

"Attention everyone.", a heavy male voice came from the front of the room. "Please stay together in your groups and come to the front when I read out your names. You will be given your one-way portkey and your possible tasks. Do not worry about your safety, a trained team is going to be ready at moment's notice to portkey you to safety or bail you out. There is going to be surveillance through scrying too, but this does not mean that you should not care about your life. Rewards will be given based on your overall performance, and they are worth a little effort, I assure you."

The man began reading out three or four names at a time, and after a few minutes of waiting, Sebastian and his group were read out. Upon coming to the front, they were handed three backpacks, a map, an envelope, and a small black rope with a small pendant, depicting the standard sigil.

"Please grab the rope and hold it firmly. Stay safe, have fun and good luck!", the man said to them and gave a reassuring smile towards the nervous three.

Half a second later, they felt the typical pull of an activating portkey and swoosh, they found themselves on a small, snow covered clearing inside of a forest.

Sebastian and the two others looked around, there were a few mountain peaks in the south, but in every other direction, was just the forest.

"'H 3', everyone.", Sebastian said, upon which Alexander and Nadine began performing a routine like a well-oiled machine.

Sebastian began walking forwards with careful but large steps, while Alexander walked behind him and began casting a few spells, namely a muggle-concealment charm, which worked by making the surrounding area like the dead angle of a truck. Muggles would not see them if they did not actively look at them. Unfortunately, this spell was tailored for younger wizards and therefore not very strong. Casting a few bigger or large area spells would easily disrupt it, and while moving, the spell did not work very well. Still, it was useful just in case. Alexander also cast a few spells to gauge their rough coordinates, temperature, and quality of the air.

 Meanwhile, Nadine had her back turned towards them, carefully looking at the area behind them.

After a few moments, they reached the first trees and Sebastian transfigured the ground in front of him to create a fifty centimetres deep hole with a two metres diameter, while using the ground to create a small wall in front of him and to his left and right. He carefully stepped into the hole, turning when he reached the other side. He then motioned Alexander to enter, and said "NOW", upon which Nadine made a small jump backwards into the hole while Alexander transfigured the ground in front of Nadine to create a surrounding wall in every direction. After that, every one of them sat on blocks of ground the transfigured for themselves and created a small hole to look through for every direction.

"Good, now status.", Sebastian said.

"We are near the Austrian alps, the temperature is minus two degrees Celsius, and the air quality is good.", Alexander answered immediately.

"No one in sight. I saw no animals and the snow looked untouched, which is somewhat unnatural. But there are no threats to be expected.", Nadine continued.

"Good, I saw no animal too, and there isn't any threat either. Well done.", Sebastian finished the report and all of them visibly relaxed. They had experienced many different scenarios while practicing in a simulation room of the school, but luckily, this was the real life and there should not be any immediate threats when they were just transported here by the school.

Sebastian put his staff to the side and motioned the others to stay alert and look around, while he opened the envelope and read out loud:

"Dear Sebastian, Alexander, and Nadine,

You are in Austria, near the alps in a region where humans seldomly wander. This is because there are a few weak, large-scale repellent charms, as this region has a lot harmless magical beasts or rare animals and creatures inhabiting it. Therefore, try not to disrupt their natural habitat too much.

Now to your possible tasks:

I.

Information: A group of muggle hunters has found their way into this area and threaten to discover the magical creatures. Knowing their nature, the muggle hunters are likely to try and hunt a few of them, which would pose a threat to both them and the animals.

Task: Knock out the hunters without hurting them or endangering their lives and transport them to the given coordinates and hand them over to a team of ministry workers and obliviators.

Difficulty: XXX

Required sub-tasks: 1. Locate the hunters, 2. Find out about their numbers, 3. Knock them out without getting hurt, 4. Transport them to location XXX

II.

Information: A group of wolves threaten a small pack of mooncalves living at a large clearing nearby.

Task: Eliminate the wolves.

Difficulty: XXXX

Required sub-tasks: 1. Locate the pack, 2. Find out about their numbers, 3. Eliminate them.

 III.

Information: At the foot of the mountain, two mountain trolls were sighted. Them being away from their normal territory threatens a part of the local ecosystem, which could lead to the extinction of a few beasts in the reservoir and to the overpopulation of other beasts as a consequence.

Task: Eliminate the trolls.

Difficulty XXXXX

Required sub-tasks: 1. Locate the trolls, 2. Find out about other threats, 3. Eliminate them.

The tasks are optional and a part of the ministry's work. In case of failure, the ministry will intervene and finish the tasks. As you help the ministry, a monetary reward will given additionally.
