But, even with their title as guests, the walls have ears. They have a written pass to search for the necromancer that terrorizes people, obviously, folks are interested in them. Both Ollie and Wes, though, prefer to keep their thoughts to themselves and that’s why they take the trouble of having private spots. It’s not anywhere too hidden because they aren’t working against the Elder or the Chieftain and they don’t want other people to think they do, but somewhere they won’t be overheard easily.
The fact of the matter is that the necromancer is a problem for three nations that happen to share a border point: Pomo, Shoshone, and Nez Perce. They’ve had missing people, so when Ilixo said he was going to send somebody, the other chieftains agreed to let them pass. Wes doesn’t fool himself into believing that they did so without keeping an eye on them, but it’s a big thing in and of itself. It shows urgency and desperation to solve a problem.
