The kitchen was a gleaming white, somehow staying crisp and clean through probably years of being used. They had soft marble countertops and a new looking, modern dishwasher and oven. The best of the best. That was something that Dylan wasn't used to. Not at all.
Dawn Barlowe's face lit up like Avonlea had never seen before when her eyes landed on Dylan. Here we go… "Oh my gosh! Avonlea you brought home a boy! Is he your boyfriend? Has this new school changed your thinking that fast?" Avonlea cringed, shaking her head slowly. Meanwhile, Dylan could barely keep a straight face without breaking into a wide smile from Avonlea's mother going crazy once she saw him. Well, Dawn would certainly be happy if Avonlea ever brought home a guy in that way. Too bad it wasn't Dylan. Nor would it ever be.
"Jeez mom, calm down. No, Dylan is just someone that I'm working on an art project with. He'll probably be coming over for a bit to finish it." Dawn's face fell slightly before nodding her head in understanding. Her right hand reached out for Dylan to shake, which he did.
"Hello, please call me Dawn," Dawn said with a warm, motherly smile.
"Dylan." He spoke, his tone slightly softer than usual since he didn't want to be that rude. He was always taught to respect his elders. Even if they didn't deserve it, in his case. However, he still obeyed. Dawn nodded her head and sighed.
"Well, you guys can work wherever." She spoke with a small shrug. Dawn was short and frail-looking just like Avonlea. They had the same eyes. The same dark green eyes. Avonlea did look a lot like her mother, only, Dawn's hair was a dark brown rather than Avonlea's fiery red that matched her personality perfectly. Dawn had aged rather well, only having a few wrinkles around her mouth and eyes, probably from smiling and laughing so much. Dylan Sinclair began to wonder if he would ever have those wrinkles as Dawn Barlowe has them. He certainly hadn't siled enough yet to have them. He began to worry if he would ever smile so much that he could have them. Maybe, maybe not. "Avonlea, I'm going to start making dinner."
Avonlea nodded her head, motioning for Dylan to follow her. Leading them up to her room, Avonlea swung the door open. Dylan's eyes widened at the sight of her room, it was… different. The walls were painted a light yellow color with polka dots of purple, her bed having a comforter of lilac, and the pillows were a light blue. The bed was to the right, in the middle of the wall. Straight ahead were two glass doors that seemed to be leading to a balcony with almost sheer white curtains covering the doors and keeping people from seeing inside. To the left wall, there were two doors, Dylan assumed a bathroom and a closet, and in between the two was a dresser with a tv stacked on top of it.
"We can start if you want." Avonlea's voice was heard from beside him as her dark green eyes stared up at him, confusion dancing around in them. Nodding his head, Dylan followed Avonlea to her bed, sitting down on the edge. He didn't want to invade her space and sit right up against her. Plus, he didn't want to do that to himself. Even though Avonlea wanted him to sit next to her. To be able to feel the warmth radiating from his body onto hers. But, they both kept their distance.
Clearing his throat to try and clear the tension, Dylan grabbed his sketchbook from his backpack, also grabbing a few pencils. "I say we both draw what we want on our project, and combine them at a later date." Avonlea nodded in agreement. They both took their own supplies on their own side of the bed and began to draw. For Dylan, he began with a landscape. The project was what he valued and the meaning of life from his perspective. So, he was drawing a landscape with people's faces drawn into the landscape, hidden. It portrays being able to go outside and be with friends and have a bright smile on your face. Well, that's what it portrayed to Dylan at least.
Avonlea, on the other hand, drew buildings with bustling people around, everyone looking confused and lost. She was portraying how no one knew the meaning of life, and she valued that. How everyone has their own spin on it. So, above everyone's head, she began drawing what she thought they might value. Dogs, money, family, everything.
Both were truly a piece of art.
They seemed to work for hours, adding shading, some soft spurts of colors. Whatever they wanted. Without knowing it, they already seemed to want to mold together. To become one drawing.
After working for a couple of hours, Dawn called from downstairs. "Avonlea! Dinners ready!" Startled, Avonlea and Dylan jumped in surprise, a squeak heard from Avonlea's side. Dylan couldn't help but release a low chuckle at that, causing Avonlea's lips to turn up to a smile.
"Well then, I should go. Enjoy your dinner, Avonlea." Avonlea opened her mouth as if she was about to say something, Dylan waiting patiently. However, she soon just shook her head and led him through the house and to the front door. After saying their short goodbyes, Dylan turned and left, not realizing how Avonlea stared at his back the whole way down the driveway, her eyes clouded with thoughts. Who really was Dylan Sinclair? Avonlea knew he was quiet, he kept to himself, and he had a lovely chuckle, but that was it. It was enough, for now.
Dylan got into his car, driving off to his restaurant, his mind filled with the thoughts of Avonlea's smile and her sparkling eyes. He was so distracted by Avonlea Barlowe and her beauty, he failed to notice the car that was following him.
