POV : Keiichi
*DING DING*
My alarm clock kept ringing, pulling me from my sleep, and I groaned. "Goodness, it's Saturday, why did I leave the alarm on?" I really wondered why I'd done that... It was the weekend, after all, a time to enjoy some peaceful sleep.
But as I turned off the alarm and slid back under the covers, peacefully... After what seemed like several long minutes, I suddenly sat up, remembering why I'd left the alarm on. "Oh no, the appointment!" Seriously, how could I forget that? I'll be late if I keep this up! I sprang out of bed and hurriedly got ready, going through the fastest morning routine I could manage.
"We agreed on this yesterday, how could I forget overnight? Argh, darn it! I need to hurry!"
After getting ready (very quickly), I rushed downstairs to wolf down my breakfast just as fast, giving a quick greeting to my mother on the way out.
I rushed to gobble down my breakfast, even though I would have preferred to savor my mother's delicious cooking. But I didn't have a choice!
After finishing, I hastily put on my shoes and bid my mother farewell before rushing out, slamming the door behind me, and I began to run without looking back.
"Darn, I'm giving Mion even more ammunition to tease me!"
Come to think of it, maybe with Kyotaka, my brother, things could change, right? He seems completely immune to these taunts with his expressionless face... At first, I found it strange, but in reality, he's very kind, and he even saved me from Mion's attacks! And this guy even dodged Rena's supersonic attack. I'll have to ask him to teach me how he does that, and then I can become invincible! Yes, nothing will be able to stop me if I can resist Mion's teasing and Rena's blows. I'll somehow become the king of this village with Kyotaka... The "KK" brothers, right? Anyway, one thing's for sure... I need to hurry!
I had taken advantage of the day off to take it easy that morning, and the consequence was immediate: I was late for my appointment with Kyotaka and the girls.
It had been arranged for Rena and Mion to show Kyotaka and me around the village today!
Of course, they were already there, both of them, waiting for me. However, Kyotaka hadn't arrived yet. At least, I wasn't the last to show up... But what on earth was he up to? Oh, now that I think about it, it seems pretty obvious... He was probably wondering where to meet us, so I guess we'll go find him. Mion must surely know Kyotaka's location; she seems to have a radar for finding EVERYONE, after all, nothing would surprise me.
Mion: Well, look who's late!
Keiichi: Yeah, I know, sorry. Complain to the TV channels for airing such interesting stuff so late at night...
Mion: You've got some nerve showing up late for a date and using that as an excuse? Can't you imagine the poor guy on the other side, waiting at home, wondering if we bailed on him, in tears?
Rena: Um... Mii, you just arrived too, you know.
Mion: Ah... Uh... Ahahahaha! Well, you see, the "24 Hours With..." show was really fascinating last night...
You too, Mion? Really? And she's the one complaining about having to keep Kyotaka waiting!
I glanced at Rena, who was carrying an unusually heavy-looking canvas bag. I couldn't help but wonder what was inside... Mion shot me a look that confirmed my suspicions. Rena had clearly prepared a full-blown picnic!
Mion: Kei-chan, check this out... Rena went all out!
Keiichi: Hey, I didn't force her, you know!
Rena: Oh, but... It's nothing, really. No, seriously!
Mion: She's been super busy with it since last night! You and Kyo-chan better pull your weight, guys!
Keiichi: Yeah, everything's cool... We'll do our part! As long as I'm not stuck doing all the work, and Kyotaka chips in, we should be fine!
Rena: Your WHAT? What are you guys talking about!?
Mion and I turned around slowly, our gaze fixed on the hefty bag behind Rena. In normal circumstances, you wouldn't think of a lunchbox when you saw something that large.
Keichi: Hmmm... How much do you think it weighs? 2 kilograms?
Mion: No, Rena makes an effort to carry it... I'd say 5 kilograms.
Rena: Oh, come on! No way! I just thought Keiichi and Kyotaka... well, they're both boys, right? They need something to fill their stomachs, after all! Oh-hoist! Alright, we can go get Kyotaka now!
People don't usually say "oh-hoist" when carrying a simple meal...
Keiichi: I believe you, Mion. 5 kilograms...
Mion: Well, I'll try to help out, but you and Kyo-chan better do a good job! We'll pass on the message, of course... If you disappoint her, be prepared to suffer!
As we headed towards where Kyotaka apparently lived, following our guide, Mion... I focused on the only thing to do: walk and burn calories to work up an appetite later...
...
POV : Kyotaka
I find myself sitting on the couch, my gaze fixed on the "Constraints" app displayed on my phone. My mind wanders, immersed in deep contemplation about my current situation. I wait, with a patience tinged with boredom, for the imminent arrival of Mion, Rena, and Keiichi. The meeting place still eludes me, as I'm not very familiar with this village. Perhaps I could have joined them along the way if I had followed their itinerary from Keiichi's or Rena's place yesterday. However, I choose to defer this action to delve deeper into my thoughts. After all, I don't feel the necessary motivation to embark on this quest. Furthermore, my friends don't seem the type to leave me behind. They don't give the impression of lying or being casual about it.
I focus on my thoughts, letting my mind roam freely as I wait patiently for their arrival. I trust their word, and I'm confident they won't leave me alone for long.
Strangely, it seems that Keiichi is at the center of it all... In the end, it leaves me with more time to meditate on both the strange constraints I explored yesterday and the daily constraints that will start next week. I can only imagine what these might entail. Are they restrictions related to the "mystery" I'm supposed to seek and solve, like instructions such as "don't go to a certain place," or something else entirely? Maybe Rubiscarl knows something about potential "events" or other elements related to the mystery, and she wants to limit me from going there. At this point, coming from her, nothing should surprise me. After all, she sent me to another world for "fun," sends me messages by letter at her leisure, even when my house is locked, and adds these "constraints" on a whim. So now, she could very well give me a constraint as bizarre as "go to school walking on your hands," and it wouldn't even surprise me. However, I shouldn't tempt fate by imagining something so tedious, as who knows, it might actually happen someday, right? Just thinking about it makes me sigh even more...
As I continue my reflections, a sound suddenly rings in my ears, probably from the house's doorbell. I turn my gaze toward the door and emit another sigh, putting my phone back in my pocket before I stand up. Hands in my pockets, I head toward the door.
"For now, I guess I don't really need to worry about it... Might as well enjoy this day spent exploring Hinamizawa with my new friends."
However, I can't help but wonder about this... How are the others in my old class doing? After all, I assume they have no idea of what happened to me, as if I simply vanished from the face of the Earth, even from the whole world. I wonder how Horikita and the others are faring. It's true that I miss annoying her a bit, but I'm not too worried about them. Horikita has come a long way since the beginning of the year, and she could manage without me. No, the one I might be more concerned about is Kei. After all, I promised her my protection, and she became the perfect pawn... It's frustrating to think that I had managed to build an ideal pawn, only to start from scratch in this world and abandon her, especially after the efforts I invested in it.
I suppose all of this doesn't really matter for now. I never really considered Kei a true friend at the outset, so my feelings about her are rather neutral. Ultimately, I know I'm still trapped in this place, and I wonder if I'll ever be able to change my situation. But in the end, here, in this place where I am (almost) free from all constraints, where I'm actually completely free from the chains of this place and "that man," I no longer need to worry about it. I just need to live my life the way I want, alongside my new friends, and learn whatever I desire in their company.
...
I arrived at the door and opened it with a wave of my right hand, keeping my other hand in my pocket. Behind the door, I was greeted by smiling faces, evidently excited about spending the day together. Mion, Keichi, and... Rena stood there, with a gigantic bag that must have weighed around 5 kg, likely filled with provisions for the midday picnic. I wondered if there was perhaps too much food for us, but it didn't really concern me.
What particularly caught my attention was how Rena managed to carry the imposing bag effortlessly. It prompted me to wonder if she had some experience or played a sport. However, this detail didn't matter much to me.
Mion: Hey, little guy, did you also have an alarm clock failure due to the thrilling show last night? You took forever to open this door, seriously! We were worried you'd be crying, thinking we left you all alone here, quite an adventure... Turns out, it was all in vain.
Mion wasted no time and started the conversation as soon as she entered, instantly infusing the room with her cheerful mood, just like the previous day. She seemed to have an endless supply of energy.
I noticed that each of them was wearing different clothes from the day before, which was entirely normal. I responded to Mion with my usual impassivity.
Kyotaka: Not really, I was just on my couch. I took my time to get to the door and open it, thinking that with your delay, a little more time wouldn't make a big difference.
Keiichi: What? That's some straightforwardness, to say the least... It's sensible, but I don't think adding even more delay is the best solution, you know.
Mion: Yeah, I get it, you just lost it and wanted to get back at us, huh? Ehehehe, nice try, well, buckle up and get out, or else we'll be late!
Kyotaka: Late for what, exactly? We have the whole day, don't we?
Mion: Hey, it's all just details, little guy! We'll have less time if we dilly-dally, and besides, I bet Rena's feast will take a good few hours.
When she said that, I glanced at Rena's meal once again, wondering... "Do we really have to finish all of this by noon today?" Then, I looked at Rena in the eyes, and she gave me a shy smile before speaking as well.
Rena: Hey, yeah, but... As I told Mii and Keiichi earlier... Since Keiichi and Kyotaka are boys, well, we do need to fill our stomachs, don't you think?
I exchanged a look with her for a moment, then sighed as I started to put on my shoes. In a monotonous tone, I replied, "It seems like I'll be fasting tonight."
Kyotaka: Probably, even though I'm not the type to eat a lot... It seems like I'll have to make an effort, at least for today.
Mion: Yeah, I'll lend a hand, but as I told Kei-chan, you should also take responsibility, okay? If I see Rena in tears, you and Kei-chan will pay!
Keiichi: Hey, Mion! You don't need to say it like it's a threat, it's scary... I think he understood! Well, my brother, we're going to have our work cut out for us! We'll have to burn calories while we wait. Ah, my stomach is growling, I can feel it.
I agree with Keiichi on this one. Five kilograms of food for only four people is quite unusual... And I'm not really used to eating that much, so I hope my stomach will be up to the task. Nothing serious, I suppose.
Kyotaka: Yes, unfortunately... But if it's for Rena, I guess we can do it. I'll take my share of responsibility too, and if at any point I feel like my stomach can't handle it anymore, I'll just think of Rena.
Keiichi: Well, I didn't expect that from you, Kyotaka... Ahahaha! Well, that leaves me with a bit of a response like that, but I'll do my best.
Rena: I-If it's for me, you can do it...? Oh... T-Take responsibility? I-If you can't take it anymore, you'll think of me... Oh... W-What does that mean, Mii? Huh, what does it mean?
As she said this, I noticed a little cloud of steam emanating from her head once again, just like the day before, as she began to blush... This girl really has an abnormal tendency to become feverish and regain her composure in an instant, doesn't she?
And as she blushed even more, fidgeting on her two legs with her hefty bag of food, I saw Mion burst into laughter. Was what I just said really that funny? I merely stated a truth laced with sarcasm. Keiichi also started laughing, approaching Rena with a teasing smile.
Mion: NNN! MMHMM! Aaa HA ha ha HA HA HA ha ha ha!
Mion literally burst into laughter, giving me hearty pats on the back with the palm of her hand. On the other hand, Keiichi was laughing less loudly as he approached Rena. It was at this point that I once again asked for an explanation for all of this and the reason for their sudden and seemingly exaggerated laughter while Rena blushed brightly in the brilliant sunlight.
Mion: Well, my boy, quite the flirting technique! I didn't know that one! Ha ha ha ha ha!
Rena: Huh? What? But... Huh? Hey! But? But what then??
Mion was holding her sides, doubled over with laughter. Rena seemed to have trouble grasping what was happening, becoming redder and more flustered. Keiichi, now standing next to Rena, joined in the general hilarity, wearing a mocking smile.
"Keiichi, don't add fuel to the fire, please..." I sighed, concerned about the turn of events.
I really wondered how all of this had happened. According to Mion, I had flirted with Rena? How on earth had they arrived at this conclusion, and why did everyone seem to react the same way? Did my words really imply something like that?
In any case, it was clear that this could get awkward if I didn't put an end to it quickly.
Keiichi: Hey, Rena, did you hear that? 'If it's Rena, I suppose we can do it.' Do you see what that implies, right? Looks like Kyotaka has something in mind with you... Ahahaha! Well, my brother, you carry that title for a reason! Ahahahah!
Rena: H-Hau Hau... Me and Kyotaka... Hau... If it's me, then it's okay? She seemed lost in her thoughts.
I allowed another exasperated sigh as I carefully locked the door behind me. My hands were in my pockets, and I had already set off. It was imperative for me to put an end to this incessant teasing of Rena before she turned even redder. I had clearly identified that their comments made her uncomfortable, but I was perplexed as to the reason behind her embarrassment. It was rather irritating, and I preferred to resolve this situation promptly.
Kyotaka: I thought I heard you say we needed to hurry, didn't I? Why not get started... Rena seems to be getting more and more flustered, and all I know is it's because of your words. Let's put an end to this and start the tour.
As I uttered these words while walking away, my face remained impassive. That's when Mion caught up with me, wearing a curious smile. She somehow seemed intrigued by my reaction. Keiichi followed, and Rena joined them, dragging her feet slightly, her head tilted down a bit.
"Perhaps it's due to her bag. After all, it seems quite heavy for her, which would explain why she's moving a bit slowly," I mused aloud.
Mion: Always so unflappable, huh? But believe me, one day, I'll get you to crack, you'll see! Ehehehe! Look at you, you're so stoic that you didn't even notice what happened... Or maybe, in truth, are you as embarrassed as Rena, and you're trying to mask it by changing the subject? Mmmh?
Kyotaka: I don't really understand what you're talking about... I simply noticed that Rena seems to have a fever from time to time, and these abnormal fevers dissipate quickly. Although I don't know if it's due to a particular illness or something else, I simply noticed that your words seemed to intensify her feverish state... Unless it's just a coincidence, of course.
Keiichi: W-Wait, you mean you were really talking that way all along without intending to tease? Are you genuinely that innocent? How is that possible?
Mion: Oh? Seriously, you're saying that's the truth? Mmmmh? It's rather impressive for a guy your age... Where did you live before, in a cave? Ahahaha!
Kyotaka: What do you mean? No, I'm just expressing myself according to my conviction because I have no reason to lie, at least on this type of subject...
Keiichi: Really? No, as the elder of the "KK" brothers, I can't let so much ignorance prevail in this world... Got it, you know far too little, and you need a teacher. Ahahaha! No worries, I've got everything you need. Come to me whenever you want, and I'll show you everything you need to know, all the b-
Before Keiichi could continue his sentence, which I didn't fully understand, I observed Rena abruptly setting down her bag and rushing at lightning speed towards Keiichi, who ended up on the ground in a fraction of a second.
"Once again, these reactions are excessive," I murmured.
Her movement was incredibly fast and fluid, allowing me to examine her ability in more detail. However, it was difficult to see the significance of this observation at that moment.
Rena: What are you talking about, Keiichi? What are you talking about? Teach him what, huh? Teach him what? H-Hau!
After this incident, I noticed that Mion's smile turned into a more compassionate and somber expression as she stood over Keiichi. Meanwhile, Rena continued to act as if she didn't understand...
Well, it seemed that I was the only one in this situation who was in the dark.
Mion: You've been caught again, little guy... Are you okay? You should have known you're not safe from this kind of trap in Rena's presence, right...?
Keiichi: Yeah, yeah, I know... I know, Mion. I just wasn't paying attention to what I was saying, that's all...
I sighed again as I turned and finally decided to pick up the large bag Rena had left behind after giving Keiichi that blow.
"The more I see this, the less I understand her reactions," I muttered.
Then, I headed back to the group. Mion was helping Keiichi get back on his feet, a noticeable bump now visible on his head. Rena seemed to have regained her composure and was probably turning around to retrieve the bag. However, when she saw me carrying the bag...
Rena: Oh! Kyotaka, thank you for going to get the bag, but I can carry it, no problem! She offered me a sweet smile, as she often does.
Kyotaka: No problem, I can carry it without any trouble; it's not that heavy. I noticed you seemed to have trouble with it, as if you'd already carried it over a long distance. So, I can take it from here.
Rena: A-Are you sure it doesn't bother you? Well, um. Well, if you want to, then...
Kyotaka: No problem.
I sighed again as I glanced around and noticed that Rena was blushing again. I continued to wonder what was going on with her, why she turned red so suddenly only to return to normal just as suddenly. The more I thought about it, the more I could compare her to Sakura... In fact, I might even say it happened more frequently with her.
As Rena still seemed lost in thought, she eventually turned as well. I felt her gaze on my back for a moment before she continued walking, staying a little behind.
Mion: Seriously, the way you behave and act, without flinching, is creepy, little guy... At first, I thought you were just playing around, but it looks like you really are that innocent, huh? Ehehehe, it's quite captivating! Now, I want to introduce you to all these things even more and see your stoicism shatter once you discover them... She laughed discreetly, muttering the last part so Rena wouldn't hear.
Kyotaka: I sighed again upon hearing that. I still don't really understand what you're talking about. Once again, I'm just expressing myself based on my thoughts, stating facts.
Keiichi: Yeah, but what astounds me the most is how you managed to carry Rena's bag, filled with 5 kg of food, as if it was just a quick run back from the supermarket... Seriously, how do you do that, even after dodging Rena's supersonic blow yesterday? But I have to admit, it's pretty cool, man! Ahahah! You really should show me your tricks; you must have learned something, right? If we both can do it, the 'KK' brothers will become invincible! And in exchange, I can teach you... He moved closer to my ear and whispered in a teasing tone. Well, you'll see, ehehehe!
Kyotaka: I still don't quite get what you're getting at, but to disappoint you, yesterday was just luck, and this bag is really not as heavy as you think... I've only learned how to play the piano, do calligraphy, and a bit of tea ceremony. Oh, and I won a national music tournament once.
I simply stated this in my usual monotone, wording my words as if I were delivering random and insignificant information. In reality, this was somewhat my intention here.
All of this was happening as we continued to move along a country road. I wasn't exactly sure where we were heading, just following the others and observing their movements.
In my back, I felt Rena's gaze change towards me. I turned my head slightly to see her staring at me with disbelief, as if she wanted to peer into my soul. When I noticed this, I turned back to look straight ahead and sighed.
"Well, it seems I can't fool anyone with that, it appears... But it's not really a lie in the end..."
Mion: What? Seriously? Pfff... AH ah ah AH AH! You completely cracked; what's with that story? Do you genuinely think we'd buy such a bluff, kid? Piano, calligraphy, tea ceremony, seriously? A national music tournament? I had no idea one could be so awesome at that, AH AH ah ah! I never would've thought you had a hidden sense of humor, and with that expression, it's even funnier! Ahahahaha!
Keiichi: EH? What a strange response, huh? Well, that was unexpected... Ahahaha! But it was funny; seriously, what's your deal?
Kyotaka: Well, I've said it already; I simply have a lot of l-
Mion and Keiichi: Lucks, yeah, we know!
As I heard Keiichi and Mion shout that simultaneously, Rena approached a bit closer. She seemed to have stopped staring at me the way she did earlier and returned to her usual state.
"Well, I guess I'm not really fooling them... But then again, I don't really have a reason to tell them the truth either... Especially since I'd have to explain further if I started with something, and that would violate one of those mandatory constraints... It's rather annoying."
Rena: Personally, I find it really impressive to know how to play the piano, do calligraphy, and the tea ceremony! And even more impressive to win a national music tournament; it's truly incredible, yes! And I see what you're getting at, Kyotaka, but you're not allowed to say something like "I got lucky" or "it's not very impressive." You're underestimating yourself when you say that, so just accept this compliment, okay? She smiled gently at me, her characteristic way of speaking.
As we continued to walk, hands still in my pockets and my expression unchanged, I glanced at her from the corner of my eye and responded briefly and sincerely.
I had to admit her smiles could have a certain effect on many people.
Kyotaka: It seems you're starting to understand me... I could entertain that idea, thank you.
Mion: Yeah, we teased you a bit, but admit it, kid, it's pretty awesome! I never imagined you were an artist at heart, ehehehe!! But to snag a music competition, you've got to be at the top to be part of the club elite! So, I'm not that surprised coming from the guy who beat me in a duel, even if I was holding back!
Keiichi: Wait, seriously? It's pretty cool if you think about it! To be honest, I didn't really expect that. He scratched his head, a little embarrassed. In any case, I'm glad you're joining us!
Kyotaka: Yeah, but it's not that Imp- As I was about to say that, I could see Rena out of the corner of my eye emanating a dark aura while giving me a disapproving look, sporting a sinister smile... Something that could have scared any normal human being. Well, thanks, I suppose.
After that, I saw Rena's dark aura fade away as she looked at me with a gentle smile... In fact, it almost seemed like she was expressing compassion or pity or something of that sort. I wondered why... The situation was rather strange.
Then, finally, we continued to chat about this and that, with Mion taking on the role of our guide again, leading us along different paths and allowing us to explore more deeply the beautiful and peaceful village of Hinamizawa, bathed in sunlight and animated by the melodious and resounding song of cicadas... Ah, what a peaceful place. Just me, freedom, brilliant sunshine in a tranquil village, accompanied by the song of cicadas and my new friends. It was so pleasant. And when I thought about it, those mandatory constraints didn't really seem to restrict me... In reality, they seemed to be contributing to giving me a new life in some way. Of course, there were still those daily constraints that would start on Monday, but I had already thought about that enough. Might as well enjoy this peaceful and calm moment of freedom with Keiichi, Mion, and Rena... I couldn't really consider them true friends just yet, but I had to admit that, for what it was worth, I enjoyed spending time with them. Plus, it filled my time, which was even more precious here, without a connection, without tasks to complete, with classes too easy for me, and little to think about, even regarding school.
...
As we progressed, we occasionally crossed paths with some villagers. They were few in number, but their appearances made the stroll even more peaceful. Mion and Rena greeted them immediately, and Keiichi and I followed suit, assuming that they must know all the inhabitants of this small village, having been here for a long time. The conversation continued, shifting between various trivial topics, accompanied by the songs of cicadas.
At one point, a young woman with long blonde hair crossed our path.
Keiichi: Oh? Hello!
Kyotaka: Hello.
Young Woman: Hi! Oh, it's you! You're the famous... Maebara, right? And, you must be the newcomer who moved in yesterday, Ayanokoji, isn't it?
Mion and Rena continued to greet everyone, and the interaction with this young woman continued briefly before she continued on her way.
Keiichi looked a bit puzzled, probably because this person knew his name. However, since he had moved here a bit earlier than I did, word of mouth had time to spread. Village inhabitants knowing everyone, it must be common to meet people they didn't recognize, and these were probably either Maebara family members or newcomers like me. What intrigued me the most was that I had arrived only the day before, and yet everyone seemed surprised by my sudden arrival, even though I hadn't told anyone except Chie-sensei. This suggested that rumors spread quickly in this village, which was quite impressive, I had to admit.
Keiichi: But seriously, I'm not a TV host! Why does everyone know me?
I could understand why he thought that; he probably wasn't used to small villages... neither was I, but I just deduced that, I suppose.
Mion: Well, don't be sad. There are so few inhabitants in Hinamizawa... Everyone knows each other here.
Keiichi: I see. So if people meet someone they don't recognize, it's either a Maebara or an Ayanokoji, as we've just moved in... Well spotted.
Mion: Hmm, yeah, that's about it.
He caught on more quickly than I thought, after all. I guess it was something more than logical.
Kyotaka: I can understand for Keiichi, as he moved in a few weeks ago, but how is it that everyone already knows my name when I arrived just yesterday? Yesterday, I noticed that no one seemed to be expecting a newcomer when I arrived at school, and even the passerby I met on the way looked very surprised... I must say I'm impressed with how quickly rumors circulate here.
Keiichi: Oh, right! We were surprised by his arrival yesterday, too.
Mion: It was totally unexpected, yeah, but that doesn't necessarily mean it's negative. Honestly, your arrival is incredibly surprising and strange, but we'll adapt. As you said, kid, it's a tiny village, so gossip spreads at the speed of light.
Keiichi: Yeah, it makes sense when you think about it.
Kyotaka: I see.
They were inevitably taken aback by my sudden arrival, given that I appeared here without warning. The way Rubiscarl orchestrated all this didn't make it any easier to understand. However, I suppose they figured there was no reason to be suspicious, especially since they had already located my new house, etc. So, as I suspected, my arrival simply spawned a rumor throughout the village. It would be best for me not to draw too much attention, even in such a tiny village. I want to preserve the tranquility of my life here.
Rena: Everyone knows each other here, you see! We first ran into Mr. Takezô from the flower shop. He likes playing the flute and taking care of bonsai trees.
Mion: Then we met Daisuke, the grocer's second son. He loves marksmanship. He dreams of becoming a super sniper! Or something like that.
Rena: And just now, we saw one of the nurses from Dr. Irie's practice, her name is Myo. She likes watching and filming wild birds.
Listening to this explanation, some clarity began to shed light on the situation. So, they know everyone in this village, not only superficially but in-depth. Just like the inhabitants know them and have detailed information about them. This might be a useful resource if I ever need information about someone or something in the future. For now, it doesn't seem necessary, but it's good to know I can count on them for that.
Glancing over, I noticed that Keiichi seemed entirely flabbergasted by this revelation. He probably didn't expect Mion and Rena to have such a detailed knowledge of the village residents.
Mion: Well, what can you do? It's not like the city, we pay attention to our neighbors here.
Kyotaka: Yes, I can understand. It's not really surprising.
Mion: Coming from you, I admit it was predictable. If I ever see you change your expression or even be surprised one day, I'll think you've been replaced by a clone from another planet or something.
Rena: Yes, that's right, Kyotaka, you should smile from time to time!
Kyotaka: I'm just not the kind of guy who smiles a lot.
Keiichi: Yeah, we noticed! But don't worry, one of these days, we'll make you crack, I'm sure. It's impossible not to laugh even once here, you'll understand over time. You've just arrived, after all.
Rena: I agree with Keiichi, although it would be more our job to tell you that, as Keiichi is also new. She gave me another of her sweet smiles.
Kyotaka: Very well then, I look forward to it.
So, they want to make me smile, is that it? Well, we'll see about that because I can smile, even if it doesn't happen often. We have all the time in the world, so let's see if they can make it happen.
Keiichi: Speaking of which, let's get back to the topic of how you know everyone here... I have a question.
Rena: Ahahaha! Keiichi Maebara! You say such mean things, but deep down you're a good person.
Mion: You moved here three weeks ago. Favorite activity: napping. Recently, you've started wearing boxer briefs... Is that right?
Keiichi: All right, that's enough, thank you!
Kyotaka: There are some pieces of information I still feel obligated to ask how you obtained... although I'm not sure I want to know the answer.
Mion: Why is that, Kyo-chan? Are you afraid we might dig into your secrets? Mmmmh? Maybe you're hiding things that would tarnish your image as an impassive guy, huh? I noticed you reacted when I brought that up, so are you wearing boxer briefs too?
Rena: You're wearing... boxer briefs...
Keiichi: I said stop! These questions are not appropriate to ask a guy!
Kyotaka: Well, yes, to answer, I do indeed wear boxer briefs. However, I'm not quite sure what makes this particularly interesting.
Keiichi: Wait, you just answered like that, as if it's no big deal?
Kyotaka: It's just one question among others, isn't it? I didn't see any reason not to answer.
Keiichi: What? But there are plenty of reasons not to answer! I'll have to give you a thorough education on this topic, starting from scratch!
Rena: H-Hau... Kyotaka wears... boxer briefs...
Once again, a completely unfathomable scene played out before me, as if I had become familiar with these incomprehensible situations. Rena resumed her tendency to blush slightly, manifesting that strange fever. Keiichi seemed completely taken aback, reacting emotionally, while Mion found amusement in this situation. I honestly didn't understand why this topic had to be so delicate.
Keiichi: So, if I understand correctly, you don't want to show us the village but rather show us to the villagers?
Kyotaka: Yes, I was thinking pretty much the same... as if it's a way to show we can integrate well.
Rena: That's about right, yes. You have good deductive skills, Kyotaka!
Mion: Yeah! We wanted to show you guys strolling around and having fun. Everyone who sees us will tell others that you're enjoying yourselves here and have already integrated.
I get it; it's indeed a logical reason. Cultivating a good reputation in this small village is a smart strategy because if I ever need anything, I could at least count on them. Yes, it makes sense.
Rena: Yes, and that's even more true for Kyotaka, considering he arrived here yesterday in such a mysterious way, and almost no one in the village knew about it.
Mion: Yeah, we were more surprised than anything. Hinamizawa is almost a dead village. We're glad to see people settling down here.
I guess that's a logical thing after all. They don't seem to be too bothered by it. Rena might occasionally throw me perplexed looks or stare at me as if she's trying to unravel a mystery, detect if I'm lying at certain moments, or even as if she's examining my soul. However, she quickly reverts to her usual behavior, like the others in general by now. For someone coming from the city, like Keiichi, for example, he probably never thought about introducing himself to newcomers in the neighborhood. And as for me, it's unlikely it would have crossed my mind. Rena and Mion seem to already have a good idea of my personality by observing me, although I remain unruffled and impassive. You can glean a bit of my character and personality from it, although it doesn't reveal the entirety of who I am. If I think about it, this ritual seems to be a fairly important tradition here. Fortunately, I don't really mind it. I'm in a new village with new traditions, so I might as well integrate as best as possible. I'll just go with the flow because it's actually quite pleasant.
"Another person on the path, apparently..."
As we continue to walk and discuss various topics, having a rather enjoyable time despite the scorching sun beating down on my head, we once again run into some people. And, once again, this person addresses us. I'm starting to think that the village's inhabitants are incredibly kind and polite, which can be quite disconcerting, I must admit.
Random Woman: Well, well... Hello to you four! You seem to be having a good time, I must say?
Keiichi: Ah, hello, Mrs. Fujisaki!
Kyotaka: Good day as well.
Fujisaki: Well, look at you, my dear Maebara, you're in good company, I see! How are you? Are you getting used to the village? And if I remember correctly, you're the newcomer from yesterday, Ayanokoji, right? It's nice to see you've already made acquaintance with someone.
I began to think about my possible response options. If I want to integrate well with the village inhabitants and be well-received, it's obvious I must be polite. However, I also need to choose my response as a whole and the tone I use. Perhaps I could try a little smile and speak somewhat like Mion or Rena, using their tone. No, on second thought, that would probably seem very strange, and I'm sure it would surprise Rena, Mion, and Keiichi. It's not a viable option.
By glancing, I could see Keiichi was also struggling to find polite phrases while nodding vigorously. It seems I'm not the only one who has trouble with this kind of interaction. It makes me feel a little less alone. So, I just followed along and responded similarly to Keiichi, but with my usual monotone tone. Surprisingly, the woman didn't seem to mind my monotone voice that makes it seem like I'm bored with all of this. It reassured me, partly because I want to be well-liked in this village.
The woman seemed to be laughing a lot, in fact... "Is she making fun of us because we're overdoing it? This is really boring..." She probably doesn't understand how complex these interactions can be, which is probably the most complicated thing ever.
Mion: Good!
Mion and Rena seemed to enjoy our behavior, judging by their reactions. Mion winked at Keiichi, and Rena gave me another sweet smile, as if to congratulate me on something... Again, it was a bit confusing, but far from unpleasant.
Rena: So, how about we have a bite to eat, nice and slow? No?
After Rena said that, I could feel my stomach growling... Not because I was hungry but more out of anticipation of the torture I was about to endure, which I had temporarily forgotten about while chatting with Mion and Keiichi.
"I'm even willing to bet this torture could be the worst I've ever endured, in the end..."
Keiichi, Mion, and I looked at each other as I sighed, seeming resigned.
Keiichi: ... I'm a man, I will face my destiny! But still... there'll be way too much!
Mion: Alright, my boy. Let the pro handle it.
Kyotaka: I guess I'm also ready to participate in what will become my "new compass."
I could see the others looking at me strangely before bursting into laughter due to my strange remark... Meanwhile, out of the corner of my eye, I noticed Keiichi looking at Mion and me one after the other, with hopeful eyes.
Mion: Rena, for once, when we eat outside, I'd like to eat in a really nice spot with a beautiful view and all.
Rena: Yes! Yes, yes, very good idea! I'm in!
I could see that Rena seemed thrilled by this idea, while Keiichi simply nodded in agreement... and I joined him in that gesture. So, we continued our walk, all together, while peacefully chatting, along the paths of this peaceful village, where the cicadas were still keeping us company.
...
Keiichi: Seriously, Kyotaka, how do you manage to carry this giant 5 kg picnic bag from the beginning and climb these stairs like it's nothing? It even looks like a piece of cake for you, like it requires no effort at all.
Mion: You have to admit you're pretty talented, buddy! Piano and calligraphy must come in handy, huh? She teased me with a sarcastic tone.
Kyotaka: You could say that... And besides, this bag isn't as heavy as you make it out to be; you just need to carry it correctly, and it's quite easy to transport.
Rena: But I know it's still a bit heavy. But Kyotaka is really strong, so it's okay... But if you want to rest, you can tell me, and I'll take over!
Mion: Well, look, Rena! It doesn't seem to bother him much! Even though we can't see it on his impassive face, I'm sure he's fine. And, he's a guy; he should be able to carry it if he hopes to charm you.
Kyotaka: I'll be fine, don't worry about me, Rena. We're almost there, right?
Rena: C-Charm me? T-That's... H-Hau...
We finally reached what appeared to be the grounds of a temple after climbing stone stairs, and I still carried the large bag of food without a problem. Upon closer inspection, I noticed that the temple was old, although it was very quiet and clean, with fallen leaves swept to the side. It seemed to be active and well-maintained. "A temple, huh? I'll have to think about this; it might come in handy later..."
Rena: Here, this is the Furude Temple. This is probably where we'll have the best view of the whole village!
Mion: Remember how we got here! This is where the village festival will take place soon.
Keiichi: Oh, really? Isn't it a bit early for the season?
Kyotaka: I don't think so necessarily; festivals don't have to be held exclusively in the summer, after all. We're in a small village, not a city, so things are different.
Keiichi: Oh, yeah, that makes sense, actually! He looked a bit embarrassed while scratching the back of his head.
Mion: Once again, you've got it right, little guy! By the way, it seems that the Cotton Drifting Festival (Watanagashi) originally marked the end of winter.
I could see that Keiichi seemed slightly embarrassed as a city dweller.
"In the end, several interesting elements were revealed..."
Upon reflection, what had been shared might seem trivial, just part of our casual conversation. However, several details caught my attention. First, the temple had been named the "Furude Temple," and if I remembered correctly, that was Rika's last name. In a village as small as this, it was unlikely that someone else would have the same name. This led me to believe that the reference was related to her, perhaps her family. Maybe Rika came from a family of priests or a lineage of priestesses. It was too early to ask about it, as it could be seen as an intrusive interrogation that would disrupt our pleasant conversation. Moreover, bringing up the subject directly right after hearing about the temple might seem suspicious. So, I chose to wait and keep this information in the back of my mind, feeling a growing curiosity about Rika. I might meet and talk to her at some point, but for now, I focused on Mion, Keiichi, and Rena.
The second thing that particularly caught my attention was the announcement of an upcoming festival sooner than expected. I was deeply convinced that this festival held great significance. It could even be the foundation of this "mystery." Unfortunately, Rubiscarl didn't specify when this mystery would unfold or whether I could access it immediately. There was no need to dwell on this issue for now. Nevertheless, the name of this festival had sparked my curiosity, and I found it somewhat amusing. The Watanagashi Festival (綿流し祭) could be interpreted as "Cotton Drifting Festival" or "Cotton Purification Festival." However, the term "Wata" (綿), meaning "cotton," was homophonous with "Wata" (腸), meaning "intestines" or "entrails." Hence, one could ironically call it the "Festival of Drifting Intestines" or "Festival of Entrail Purification." I found this play on words amusing, albeit tinged with a certain macabre element. It could potentially hold a deeper meaning. Who knows, I might have the opportunity to use it for jokes with Mion and the others later on.
Rena: Alright, let's start setting this up... Perfect!
Rena had carefully arranged numerous colorful dishes in front of us. The aroma wafting from the food heralded a feast, and my appetite began to stir. At this moment, I wondered if Rena was the mastermind behind this delicious spread. The food's quality and Rena's radiant smile made me believe that was the case.
Mion had mentioned that the exceptional view would whet our appetite, and she wasn't wrong. The picturesque sight was enough to tantalize the senses, though Keiichi seemed more shocked than anything. He gazed at all these dishes with an expression of awe and swallowed hard.
However, just as we were about to start our meal, something, or rather, someone, interrupted our momentum.
Rika: Hello, everyone.
I noticed that Rika and Satoko had just arrived, and I couldn't help but smile, understanding Mion's little ruse.
"I see, well played, Mion..."
Keiichi, on the other hand, appeared perplexed and confused, likely pondering how Satoko and Rika knew we were having a picnic here and had come to join us. The answer probably lay in the prearranged nature of it all. Mion must have informed them, which was why the picnic basket was so substantial. In the end, this basket was sufficient for a normal meal for all of us, which wasn't a bad thing.
I noticed Mion was watching Keiichi and me with a big grin. I nodded in response. It seemed like Keiichi was starting to grasp the situation.
"He catches on pretty quickly, which is a good thing..."
Satoko: Well, look at this... I was wondering who could make such a ruckus, and... Oh? But... What is all this?
Keiichi: You don't have holes in your head, do you? It's mealtime, isn't it? Today's menu: a well-stocked buffet, specially prepared by Rena.
Satoko: I got it at first glance, you brute! But I want to know why you're setting up your picnic in our garden!
Kyotaka: Is this your garden? I thought it was a public temple area. Do you live here? I can understand why it might be seen as inappropriate to picnic near a temple.
Rika: No problem, Kyotaka. I declared this garden a public utility.
Keiichi: Ah! Rika, you're a real gem, you know! But come on, sit down! Eat with us.
During this little sequence, I had confirmed some interesting details. First, Rika had declared this temple as a public utility, which, I presumed, was a jest. However, they had said the temple was their property, and they lived here. So, Rika was indeed affiliated with the temple as a Furude, indicating she was a priestess. As for Satoko, I had several questions. Did she live here with Rika? Several possibilities existed, with one being that she was an orphan and had been taken in by Rika's family, the Furudes, which wasn't out of the question. Another possibility was that Satoko's family had some kind of affiliation with Rika's family. For example, there might be servant families destined to serve more prestigious families, or there could be a family from another branch of the Furude family, separated from the main branch. In any case, it was an intriguing subject.
After Keiichi's remark, I noticed Rika was giving me an innocent smile before sitting right next to me, picking up her chopsticks.
"For some reason, she seems to enjoy being next to me... I don't mind; I've never had a little sister, so why not..."
Satoko: But seriously, what nerve! Where am I supposed to sit?
Keiichi: Just sit nowhere. There's nothing to eat for you here anyway.
Kyotaka: Really? Personally, I think there's more than enough food for one more person, and there's still space for at least three more people.
Rena: I agree with Kyotaka... So, stay, Satoko.
Keiichi: No way! I'll eat her portion if I have to!
Satoko: But! I forbid you! Rika, come on!
Kyotaka: While eating with my chopsticks, I reached out with my other hand to offer chopsticks to Satoko. No problem, as I said earlier, I think there's more than enough...
Satoko: Well, there you go! You see, Keiichi, you should take a page from dear Kyotaka! He's at least a hundred times less rude than you! She stuck her tongue out at him.
I noticed that Rika had also picked up chopsticks to offer them to Satoko, but she seemed surprised that I did it before her and responded in her place. What was intriguing was that her gesture seemed mechanical, as if she were used to repeating it... It was quite intriguing.
With a swift motion, Satoko moved to sit next to Keiichi, to his left, while Rika sat to his right, and I was to the left of Rika. Satoko immediately pounced on the lunch boxes, playfully bickering with Keiichi.
I sighed once, thinking about how much I expected it. I guess if I stayed here for long enough and had to leave someday, I wouldn't be used to not seeing them quickly, and I'd miss this peaceful, noisy, and rather fun atmosphere a lot.
Mion: Well, Kei-chan... You sure have a way with words. Kudos.
At the same time, I saw Rena handing out paper plates.
Rena: Here, some plates. For you, Mii, and for you, Rika.
Rika: I think we should start too if we want some...
Keiichi: You're right. Okay! Ready for a showdown, Kyotaka?
Kyotaka: Don't include me in that; I don't think it's necessary... Let's just enjoy the food.
Rena: Yes! Eat as much as you want; there's plenty!
While I ate, I could see Satoko and Keiichi play-fighting over the food, elbowing each other and bickering as if their lives depended on it. It was quite amusing to watch, but I couldn't help but wonder if Keiichi might actually be the same age as Satoko and Rika, just taller than average... A question I would keep to myself. Satoko seemed to be elbowing him, and Keiichi was holding his ground with his chopsticks...
Satoko: You won't have this hamburger!
Keiichi: Ow! Hey, Satoko, no elbowing, remember!
Satoko: And you, don't grab people by the collar of their shirt! Nooo! Not the last meatball!
Keiichi: Satoko Hôjô, you LOOOOST! *Cough-gurgle*
Keiichi finally choked, closely followed by Satoko. I could see them kicking their legs and flailing their arms on each other's backs. It was like watching two children at play. Yet I couldn't help but find this scene both amusing and heartwarming, a part of the peaceful everyday life I was discovering here, even if it was only my second day.
Rika, sitting to my right, then took the time to massage Keiichi and Satoko's throats to ease their discomfort. Apparently, she had some healing abilities as a priestess. While I couldn't verify the effectiveness of her treatment, it was impressive to see her act this way.
Rena, on the other hand, seemed to be in awe again, gazing at Rika with boundless admiration for the gesture she had just made. It had become a habit for me in these few days to become accustomed to everyone's reactions in this village.
Rena's strange behavior and words often elicited comments from Mion that I didn't always understand, and when I asked for clarification, everyone seemed to laugh and tease each other in a mysterious way. Rena seemed even more exuberant, alternating between looking at me and Rika in a way that defied logic.
All of this was exactly what I had been looking for: freedom, a peaceful moment among friends, disrupted only by the gentle breeze and the sweet sound of cicadas, without any other worries or concerns. It was a good start to my new life.
Rena: Oh? Is that a smile, Kyotaka? You're smiling? Oh... it's so cu-cute...
Keiichi: Well, that was really unexpected! This smile is worth its weight in gold; we can consider this picnic a total success!
Mion: I was starting to think you were incapable of smiling... But in the end, we managed to make you let loose, little guy. As expected from the elite of the Hinamizawa game club, it only took us two days.
Satoko: I must admit that this expression on your face is rather pleasing, my dear friend. Your smile makes this picnic even more charming.
Rika: Kyotaka's smile is super beautiful and super cute! I want to see it more often!
Rena: T-Too cute... Yes... Kyotaka's smiling is too cute... Hau, I want to take him home!
I had noticed that everyone had stopped to watch me in silence, creating a slightly embarrassing atmosphere that I didn't immediately understand... Until their comments made me realize the reason for their gaze.
"Did I really smile? And I didn't even notice..."
I instinctively touched my face and felt my lips curling slightly, forming a faint smile that everyone had apparently noticed.
As I listened to their comments and teasing, the picnic ended peacefully, and I sipped my green tea. It seemed that this day had been memorable, even for me.
Keiichi: It's funny, though... Japanese has so few words to praise the cook.
Mion: Is it because it's a recent thing to take pleasure in eating?
Kyotaka: Well... That's not entirely accurate. The pleasure of eating in Japan is not a recent discovery; you could say it goes back several centuries. This culinary tradition is influenced by various cultural and religious factors. For example, Zen Buddhism, introduced to Japan from China in the 6th century during the Asuka era (飛鳥時代, from 538 to 710), played a significant role in culinary culture. Zen emphasizes mindfulness and meditation, influencing how the Japanese approach food. Zen Buddhist monks often created simple and aesthetically pleasing dishes, contributing to the development of kaiseki cuisine (懐石 = "light cuisine" or "cuisine from the plate"), known for its balanced flavors and elegant presentation, similar to what we have here with the dishes prepared by Rena. Additionally, the tea ceremony, introduced to Japan in the 9th century during the Heian era (平安時代, from 801 to 900), also contributed to the culture of appreciating food and the pleasure of eating. So, the enjoyment of eating in Japan is a tradition that goes back several centuries.
While I responded simply to Mion, I noticed that everyone was looking at me with interest and curiosity, as if I were an exhibit in a museum. Their expressions seemed both surprised, curious, and admiring, as if this information were rare. I suppose these details aren't widely known, but I learned all of this since my arrival in this place when I was a child.
Kyotaka: To answer what you were saying, Keiichi... The Japanese language has a relatively limited vocabulary for expressing the pleasure of eating for other reasons. This can be largely explained by Japan's cultural and linguistic norms. Modesty, restraint, and simplicity are highly valued cultural traits in Japan. Superlatives and effusive expressions were not common in everyday communication, and the Japanese used subtle and non-verbal expressions to show their appreciation, often through emotions or facial expressions. Compliments were often implicit, shown through joy or other signals, and the Japanese showed their gratitude to the cook through gestures like bowing or simply finishing their plates. It wasn't necessary to use words to express how grateful we were; sometimes it was even superfluous.
Keiichi: Oh, okay, that's interesting; I understand... WAIT. More importantly, how do you know all of this, and where are you getting all this information from? Are you some kind of living encyclopedia?
Rena: It's really interesting, Kyotaka... But, indeed, I wonder where you know all this from. I don't believe this is something you'd typically learn in school, at least not at this level. It's quite intriguing, I must say—how do you know all this, Kyotaka? She smiled gently at me, but I could see her looking at me with intrigue as well.
Kyotaka: It's just some rather useless information I picked up out of interest. I enjoy reading, so you could say it's knowledge acquired through my readings.
Mion: Phew, I can already guess that your book must be really boring if that's what you read...
Satoko: But it's still fascinating, my dear. Especially Kyotaka's store of knowledge.
Rika: I agree with Satoko! It's really impressive! Patchi Patchi Patchi, Kyotaka! She gave me an innocent smile while looking at me to my left.
Kyotaka: It's not really an achievement, but I appreciate your kind words nonetheless.
Rena: Kyotaka, what did I say about underestimating yourself and just accepting compliments, mmmh? She looked at me insistently, like a mother scolding her child.
Kyotaka: I apologize, Mom; I'll be careful. Thank you for your advice.
Rena: That's right, Kyotaka! She gave me another sweet smile after that.
At the same time, Rika leaned in to pat my head, as if rewarding a child while giving me an innocent smile.
Rena: But, to be honest, all you need to say is that it was good. It warms the heart.
I could see Rena looking away, seemingly a little embarrassed, her cheeks turning a slight shade of red. I could make a prediction: it's going to happen again. But this time, I was prepared.
Rika: ...It was good.
As expected, something would touch what appeared to be Rena's "weak spot" during this moment of vulnerability, and it hit her deeply. Rika's compliment, one could say, came at the perfect time. Her expression was clear and pure, marked by her utmost innocence. She was even better at this than Kushida, in fact.
Rena: ...haaa...
Keiichi: ?
It seemed that Keiichi had also anticipated the same outcome as I did and shared the same assumption while watching the inevitable scene unfold between Rena and Rika. My sigh could only express the inevitable scene that was taking place before our eyes.
So, after a sigh, or rather a strange moan emitted by Rena, a characteristic "puff" sound was followed by a circle of steam rising from her head. At that precise moment, I began to grasp the origin of this fever and why it could be triggered. Rena appeared to undergo another transformation once again.
Rena: Haaau!! R-Rika... I'll take you h-h-ho- no, that's not what I meant. Thank you, thank you!
Rika: ...But you're welcome. It was really good, you know.
Rena was in an extreme state of excitement, her face all red as she hugged Rika tightly, cheek to cheek. Mentally, I supported her, knowing well what awaited her, having experienced it myself since my arrival yesterday afternoon.
Upon closer observation, I could discern the innocent yet slightly mischievous smile Rika was giving me, as if she were challenging me. Why would she want to challenge me? However, upon further consideration, I began to understand. It made me sigh once more.
Rena: I've got it! Watch this...
Rena grabbed an apple and a knife, then proceeded to slice the apple in record time. Eventually, Rika ended up with an apple rabbit sculpture in her hands. I had to admit I was rather impressed by Rena's cutting skills and culinary talents; it was truly intriguing. At this point, I started to understand the challenge she seemed to be throwing my way. Well, why not participate in this game and get carried away by the extravagance, however unconventional it may be?
Rena: Tadaaaa! It's for you. Here!
Just through their attitudes and the expressions forming on their faces, I could easily guess their thoughts and anticipate what was going to happen once more, an extravagant moment, to which I had already grown accustomed. Thinking about it, it was somewhat like going back to my days at ANHS, where unusual situations were commonplace, so I already felt well-prepared.
Keiichi: So, Satoko? What's with that look? Are you searching for me?
Satoko: Do you feel capable of receiving a little rabbit too? Would you be skilled enough in tact and flattery?
Kyotaka: Is that really necessary...? I mean, why not just ask her if you want one? She'll likely accept.
Mion: Satoko, you sound so confident. Knowing you, you won't get far... And Kyotaka, no chance to refuse. Consider it a new club game.
Satoko: Oh, you think so? Well... let's see about that! And anyway, my dear, whether you join us or not, it won't make much of a difference. Are you even afraid to take on a challenge you know you've already lost?
Kyotaka: It seems like I don't have much of a choice but to accept, apparently...
After casting what seemed to be another provocative glance in our direction, she changed her voice to a more timid tone, lowered her head, and blushed. She was skilled at hiding her face behind fake expressions. I didn't know why, but I felt like Rena was going to lose her mind before this strange game was over. I sighed at the thought.
Satoko: Uhm, Rena... You know, I also thought it was really, really good...
I could recognize that this was an effective move indeed, using tears and charm... Rena, being as she is, would surely be influenced by this cunning ploy. I thought Satoko had played it well; it was a very skillful manipulation technique.
"I wonder how I'd react... It's not something I could do much about..."
I could clearly see Rena turning even redder, looking completely helpless.
Rena: Haa... Haaauuu!
I could see Rena seemed rather naive and susceptible, at least on the surface. But it remained to be seen. Anyway, Satoko was already in her arms at this point.
Rena: You're cute! Oh yes, very cute... I'll show you my room...
*Zzzp tchak! Tsssuk*
Rena: Here.
Just like with Rika, Satoko soon had a small apple rabbit in her hands. Everything was proceeding as I had anticipated. I wondered what would happen next.
And so, Satoko returned to us, clutching the small apple rabbit lovingly, while giving Mion, Keiichi, and me a mischievous look. It seemed that Rena's weakness for "cute" things had gotten the best of her. Keiichi appeared to be looking at her with obvious irritation, clenching his fists exaggeratedly. He seemed to take everything so seriously, didn't he? Participating in this strange and seemingly pointless game was a bit dull, but... I might as well blend in again, I suppose.
Satoko: Instead of moping, you should give it a try! Let's see how you perform!
Keiichi: *Rooognntudju*! You'll see, brat! And first of all, it's not fair!
It seemed like the next battle between Keiichi and Satoko was about to begin, as was often the case... Keiichi seemed to view this as cheating, but if it was part of the club game... I supposed the club's regulations applied here as well, so it wasn't really cheating in this case.
Mion: Satoko... Do you really think that's enough to win? You disappoint me... Want me to show you how it's done?
Keiichi: Yeah, go on, show her, Mion! Uh... How are you planning to do that, by the way?
It was highly unlikely that Mion would do something like that herself... For a reason I couldn't quite grasp, I had a feeling this was going to get even more boring for me. I had already figured out where she was going with this, and I didn't particularly like the idea. Of course, I was right.
Mion: Oh, but Kyo-chan will take care of it, little guy.
Keiichi: Huh???
Kyotaka: As I suspected... I'm afraid this is going to be quite an unpleasant task for me.
Satoko: Ahahaha! I want to see this! Show us what you're made of, old-timers!
Keiichi: Very well, brother, I'm counting on you to deal with this little brat then!
Mion explained the plan she had in mind for me. As I had anticipated, it was going to be a chore for me. I had already foreseen this plan but dismissed it due to its potential impact on Rena, given her current condition.
"Truly, this group might cause me more trouble than my old classmates..."
I decided to play along naturally, maintaining my monotone voice and unwavering expression. I took a sip of tea and swallowed it before starting to execute the plan assigned to me.
Kyotaka: Yes, it was really good. But tell me, Rena, did you cook all of this?
Rena: Oh... No, no. Actually... most of what I brought was frozen dishes...
Kyotaka: I see, which means you must have prepared one or the other dish, right, Rena? I watched her out of the corner of my eye, with a slightly insistent expression, implying that I had already figured something out. Can you tell me which dish, Rena?
Rena: Uh... Uh... Well... Let's say... I don't really want to say. Do I really have to?
She blushed more and more, displaying increasing signs of embarrassment, and seemed slightly under pressure, with slight perspiration.
"Perfect, that's the state I was aiming for," I thought.
Mion, Satoko, and Keiichi seemed to be watching me with a mix of perplexity and amazement, regarding my acting approach. However, sometimes you need to think outside the box to achieve an objective, even if it means not playing the traditional role of "cute" by their standards.
But it was clear that Rena was having trouble revealing certain information. Admitting that these dishes were specially prepared for someone specific, especially a boy, would likely plunge her into considerable discomfort and embarrassment. So it was inevitable that something typical would happen next.
Kyotaka: No worries, Rena, there's no need to confirm anything for me. I'm convinced that you've left your olfactory mark on this dish, so there was no mystery for me; it was pretty obvious from the beginning of the meal.
A heavy silence fell upon us after my words, spoken with my usual monotone tone, only interrupted by the surrounding cicadas' chorus. Rena had turned redder than I'd ever seen her, an intense shade of red that seemed specifically created for this occasion. Only Satoko's shocked cry slightly broke the silence, and Keiichi couldn't hold back a similar reaction. As for me, I remained unfazed, observing Rena intently with my customary unchanging expression.
Kyotaka: I believe I haven't seen any dessert in these dishes yet. Would it be possible to have some apple rabbits to continue in line with what you prepared, of course?
I think I've never done anything as humiliating, even back at ANHS. However, deep down, my initial request was merely for an apple rabbit, so merging the two plans only improved the situation. That said, my words were in no way mere flattery but rather a reflection of the truth, and I meant it sincerely.
Suddenly, Rena pulled out a Tupperware from who knows where and started emptying it onto me, creating a mountain of apple rabbits. "She always finds a way to become even more excessive," I thought as I watched the scene.
Rena: G-g-g-g-go on, e-e-eat, Kyotaka, eat! There's a l-l-lot, I c-c-can even m-m-make more if y-y-you want!!
Without me being able to protest any further, she began feeding me, stuffing dozens and dozens of small apple rabbits into my mouth. I decided not to resist any further. The more I thought about it, the more I found this situation boring. Really, the more I believed I had reached the peak of extravagance, the more unpredictable things happened. Ultimately, I didn't know whether to consider myself lucky or unlucky to have been brought here by fate. But if that was the price to pay for my freedom, I could accept it. I'd get used to it, I suppose. Besides, in just a day and a half, they had managed to make me smile without me realizing it, so I could grant them that.
Rena: Here, here, come on! S-s-say "Aaaaa," open your mouth! Aaaaa! Come on, Kyotaka! Ehhé, héhéhé, héhéhéhéhé!
I could hear Keiichi from the other side, seemingly proud of me, teasing Satoko in a strange manner. Mion just gave me a thumbs-up with a smug smile, and Rika appeared to be genuinely laughing. Yes, I could tell she was genuinely laughing at the scene.
Keiichi: So, Satoko? You're baffled, aren't you?
Mion: Well done, Kyotaka! So, Satoko? Do you admit defeat?
Satoko: Kyotaka, I thought you were at least different... I never would have believed... that you'd stoop this low! And no, I'm NOT bitter!
From where I sat, starting to taste only apple in my entire palate, unable to even sigh... I could see that Keiichi seemed to be having fun knowing this was getting on Satoko's nerves. I guess I'm starting to get a little worried for my stomach after all; who would've thought I'd sacrifice myself one day, especially for people I've known for only two days? Suddenly, in an equally exaggerated and nonsensical manner, Rena simply returned to her normal self, finally stopping from force-feeding me like a goose... And I could finally breathe, seeing Rika approaching. "Well, it looks like she has another plan too..."
Rena: Well... Rika? What's wrong, doesn't it taste good? Are the apples safe?
Rika had carefully removed the toothpick skewering her apple rabbit. She cradled the fruit figure as one would care for an injured animal, her face displaying a somewhat perplexed look. From this scene, I could easily deduce her strategy, and I turned to Rena, expecting to see her expression change into her usual eccentric Rena.
"I get it, it's a clever tactic... And it would probably work perfectly with her alone."
I finally got up, returning to a normal posture after a sigh.
Rika: ... The poor bunnies... They didn't do anything wrong, yet... I wish I could save them...
This time, you could say it was the coup de grâce for Rena... Who started having a nosebleed. Nosebleeds can occur after intense excitement, but feeling such excitement from that? At this point, this girl seemed to be the most extravagant person I had ever met in my life...
Rena: Oh... OooOOooooohhhh! You... You, I'm bringing you to my room tonight; you're going to get it...
I saw her holding Rika very tightly, spinning her around in the air... I started feeling sorry for Rika for this... Then Rena came back to her senses and collected all the scattered apple rabbits to put them back into a Tupperware, which she gave to Rika.
Rena: So they won't feel lonely. Here, Rika, it's for you. Here!
Then, after that, I saw her take the Tupperware and walk over to Satoko, then she took Satoko's arm and raised it high, saying this with an equally innocent but mischievous tone... Well done, Rika, you managed to win this strange and pointless game... Is it really a victory to be proud of? I still wondered.
Rika: Satoko and Kyotaka, winners by KO.
Mion: Huh... WHAAAT? We lost???
Keiichi: What? But, but... He let out a deep sigh. I'm sorry, brother, it seems your sacrifice was in vain... At least you managed to silence Satoko, that's something!
Kyotaka: Well done, Rika... But is it really fulfilling to win this... game?
Finally, after all that tumultuous scene, everyone had returned to "normal," and the conversation had resumed its usual course. If every day was going to be as hectic, I wondered if I'd be able to cope. It was a question that was increasingly on my mind.
I thought I had seen a lot with this group, but I realized it was probably just the beginning of troubles. However, these troubles wouldn't truly threaten my freedom, so I could probably adapt and go with the flow, at least until this "enigma" presented itself.
Perhaps I had accepted this world a bit too quickly, but I didn't have many reasons to refuse it, given all the evidence that had been presented to me. Another question crossed my mind: would I stay in this world forever, or was it only for a certain time? I had no idea, so I told myself I should just enjoy my freedom for the moment.
Mion: By the way, Kyo-chan... You've only been here since yesterday, so we don't know much about you yet. Do you have any juicy details to share, just to break the ice? To start, where are you from, before coming to Hinamizawa? Perhaps from the big city, and you wanted to experience the tranquility of the countryside, right?
Rena: Yeah, Mii's right, we don't know much about you, Kyotaka, and besides, you're always so mysterious. So you're from the big city, like Tokyo?
It seemed that the conversation had suddenly shifted, moving from apple rabbits to questions about me. It was a typical conversation starter among friends, even without the mandatory constraint, so I knew these questions would eventually come.
The mandatory constraint prevented me from discussing my own world in general, but it also allowed me to reflect on the details of this constraint. When would it be violated? How would Rubiscral decide that this rule had been broken? However, I didn't want to take unnecessary risks at the moment. I could simply invent a story, a reason to explain my sudden presence in Hinamizawa. It didn't seem too complicated.
The only thing that worried me was Rena. She seemed very perceptive and capable of detecting even the subtlest lies. Even with my impassive and expressionless face, she could sometimes doubt my words. Fortunately, I didn't think she would question my words in front of the group, even if we were alone. She was a kind and empathetic person, and I thought she would understand. However, I didn't want to take unnecessary risks that could threaten my freedom, my reputation, or my peaceful life here. So I had to be cautious in my choices and decisions, without overdoing it.
After a short pause that seemed to last an eternity, actually only a few seconds, I responded in my usual monotone voice, keeping my impassive face. I answered Mion and Rena's questions as usual.
Kyotaka: Well, there's not much to say about me, honestly... I'm from the capital of Kumamoto Prefecture, just the city of Kumamoto on Kyushu Island. It's neither a big metropolis nor a small town, and it's located quite far from Hinamizawa.
The others seemed attentive to what I was saying, probably curious to learn more about me. They appeared to absorb the information I shared, and Rika was particularly focused, gazing at me with a deep concentration, as if she were taking mental notes of every detail I provided.
"Well, I'm sorry, but you probably won't learn much about me for now..." I thought, refusing to reveal too many details.
Rena's reaction was the one that interested me the most. As I expected, she was looking at me seriously, with an intense gaze that contrasted sharply with her previous behavior. Her eyebrows were slightly furrowed, and she seemed to be scrutinizing me deeply, as if she were trying to read through me. Her ability to detect lies worried me, and I promised myself to address this issue later.
I focused on their side of the "game," like a chess duel. Rena was the master of the pieces and led the game, and I had to remain on the defensive while seizing every opportunity to attack or counter. I awaited the next question, ready to respond and anticipate what might happen.
Keiichi: You said it's quite a journey from Hinamizawa, right? So, what brought you here?
Satoko: I must admit I'm just as curious, my dear... Visits to Hinamizawa are rather rare, and relocations even rarer, so naturally, all of this raises questions.
I knew that the inevitable second question I had already prepared for and anticipated was about to be asked. I could see everyone looking at me with interest. Mion, Keiichi, and Satoko seemed to be listening closely, like friends genuinely interested in my story. Rika's gaze, on the other hand, was filled with much deeper interest, as if she had an urgent need to know more about me or that it could bring her something. However, I wasn't ready to deal with Rika yet, and it was too early to engage in a conversation with her. My attention was on Rena, who was increasingly puzzled and scrutinizing me while keeping silent, listening to my responses and analyzing any potential lies I might slip into my answers.
From the beginning of my response, I had already decided to keep it simple. "This could get really boring if their questions become more perceptive," I added. I thus answered two questions in one, anticipating the inquiries to come.
Kyotaka: Well, I'm alone, and I was looking for a place where I could save money while enjoying the tranquility. I found that this village was the perfect place to achieve both those goals. The village is very peaceful and doesn't require excessive spending.
Mion: Oh, little guy, so you live alone like Satoko and Rika, is that it?
Rena: Mii, it's not very polite to ask like that. We don't know how long Kyotaka has been alone...
Mion: Oh, yeah, sorry, little guy, I got carried away in the conversation.
Rena continued to engage in the conversation this way, and it was clear that she wouldn't let me go easily. Mion seemed genuinely sorry, scratching her head, but in reality, I didn't mind. I chose to respond in a simple and normal manner, ignoring Rena's suspicious looks and Rika's almost obsessive concentration. "Well, I'm looking forward to this conversation ending," I thought.
But an intriguing revelation had just emerged. Satoko and Rika live alone? Aren't they around 10 years old? This was a new mystery to add to the growing list, but I preferred to set it aside for now. I just hoped this boring conversation would end soon.
Kyotaka: No, don't worry, Mion. There was no way for you to know. And to answer your question, yes, I live alone.
Keiichi: Living alone at your age must be quite a challenge, right? I feel sorry for you, my brother... And wait, Satoko and Rika live alone together? Don't you have a legal guardian or something?
Satoko: Stop yelling, dear. You find it complicated because you're not resourceful at all. I'm almost certain you'd set the house on fire with every attempt at cooking. Ohohohohoh!
Rika: Yes, we live alone, but we do have a legal guardian, it's the old Kimiyoshi, the mayor of Hinamizawa! He's very kind, and he even gave us permission to live together!
Kyotaka: Yes, it can sometimes be a challenge, but we adapt. I've always been quite independent.
Rena: Yes, I've always found how independent Rika and Satoko are for their age, impressive. So, are you like them, Kyotaka? I wonder if that's why you seem so... cold and impassive? But then you're not of legal age, so you must have a legal guardian too, right?
However, it was clear that Rena continued the conversation for the specific purpose of checking the consistency of my responses, as if she were looking for inconsistencies or contradictions in my words. Rika, on the other hand, seemed very interested but for different reasons. She seemed to hang on to every word I said, occasionally casting glances at an empty space, as if she were acting as if an invisible person were present. Given everything that had happened with the otherworld story and Rubiscral, I couldn't rule out the possibility of the presence of an invisible person. This would certainly need to be added to my growing list of mysteries to solve.
As for the others, they seemed to listen to me as one would in a normal conversation among friends, absorbing my words without too much suspicion. That was the surface of the situation, or so I believed.
Kyotaka: Well, it seems that I technically have a legal guardian, but in reality, it's as if I have none at all.
Rena: Huh? What do you mean by "technically"? What do you mean?
Keiichi: I guess it's a bit like with Satoko and Rika and the mayor. He's "technically" their legal guardian, but he lets them fend for themselves, or something like that, right?
Kyotaka: That's exactly it, Keiichi. My legal guardian even lives in a neighboring town to Hinamizawa, Okinomiya, if I recall correctly. Anyway, I hardly ever see her.
Rena: Okinomiya, isn't it? I see, yes, it would be weird if that person were in Hinamizawa, because we know everyone here. She gave me a fake sweet smile, and it seemed like she said that to emphasize that I had played it well...
Mion: Oh, I see! This is super interesting. We're learning quite a bit about you, little guy! Hehehehe! But I was also wondering, have you always been as impassive as a stone statue? I find it hard to believe you were born that way.
Kyotaka: I guess I probably haven't been like this since birth, but as long as I can remember... There's not much more to add, in any case. I'm not as exceptional as you seem to think.
That's true, I've never been bullied or anything like that. There's probably not much more to add to that.
My statement elicited some form of sympathy from everyone. Keiichi seemed to want to tell me that I was wrong, albeit implicitly. Mion expressed it sarcastically by comparing my response to my duel with her the previous day. Satoko, always haughty, also subtly expressed her disagreement. As for Rika, for some reason, she seemed to get even closer to me and kept asking me questions. I tried to respond vaguely or invent details that would fit better in this world.
Rena, however, continued to talk as usual, not showing that she had spotted something. She might be trying to remind me of her recommendation not to belittle myself, all while hiding something. Her insight was impressive, and I felt she had noticed that my answers didn't match what I claimed to be. She might become a troublesome person here, but I couldn't afford to reveal anything compromising to her. As long as she didn't try to investigate me more deeply, my freedom and peace were preserved.
Rena seemed like a strong, smart, and kind person, and I might be able to use that to find what I was looking for. I didn't want anything bad to happen to her. For now, I planned to continue interacting with her normally while remaining vigilant.
