'No! This can't be!' Francis thought to himself pacing up and down the room, running his hands through his hair, cursing, and clicking his tongue.

He thought back to the first time in the airport when he had met Karen after she left New York. She had categorically told him that she wasn't the naïve girl he had fired months earlier and that she would counter back every move he made.

He had laughed it off, thinking that she was just blubbing. He knew her; she was compassionate and kind to a fault, putting other people's needs before hers.

He had seen fire burning in her eyes, yet he assumed that she was just acting strongly in his presence.

'How wrong I had been! I should have known better,' he thought sadly as he made a frantic call to one of his friends, who was an attorney.
