Hearts and Redemption in a Zombie Outbreak

Regrets became evident on Reina’s face after he had killed his enemy, Gen Yamashita, a young scientist who created the zombie virus that spread across Japan. He knows that he is the one who causes the death of his parents, but he soon realizes that vengeance is not the way to go. Instead, he became a monster like Gen, and he was devastated by it. Now, he decided to save Gen from his death, and after that, he became depressed and blamed himself for making the virus outbreak worse. It seems that he would be a broken person full of regrets. But, he will not last long in his painful depression. Gen came and reconciled with him, renewing their wills to live life again. Now they are racing against the clock to reverse Gen’s mistakes that wreak havoc across Japan. They will not do that huge and seemingly impossible mission themselves. Two of Gen’s subordinates, Arashi Hoshikawa and Nato Hokawa, and a pair of twin young women, Mara and Martha Buenavista, will accompany them in their mission, alongside Gen’s organization. Will this be a golden ticket for both Gen and Reina to a better life and future?

Chapter 5 – Working together

Third person POV

Shortly after that, Reina went to one of the shower room to finally take a shower to clean his body after almost a week of depression and self-neglect. As water washes his hair and body, he felt refreshed by its coolness and free from dirt and grime accumulated from his depression. While Reina was showering, Gen took in a survivor, who was a psychologist, so he would have his and Reina's diagnoses known and identified.

After Reina came back from the shower rooms, Nato provided him with a fresh set of clothes. Once he had put on his new set of clothes, Reina began to tidy up his room by picking up the items he had thrown on his episode of violent self-hatred and depression. Then, after that, he was called by Nato to come to the meeting room of the headquarters because the psychologist wants to see him. Reina did so and went to the fourth floor to meet up with him. Upon arriving there, Gen and Arashi are there, too, sitting down with the psychologist. Reina closed the doors, and he and Nato sat down next to Arashi.

Then, their checkup has started. Gen and Reina expressed their problems to the psychologist in every detail. That psychologist, a middle-aged man named Ken Shunsuke, understands their problems and jots down the details of them in sheets of paper on his clipboard. Arashi and Nato then confirms Reina and Gen's problems with their eyewitness accounts, and Ken accepts them and compares them with Reina and Gen's. And so, Ken diagnoses Reina with PTSD, depression, and Cotard Syndrome, while he diagnoses Gen with Antisocial Personality Disorder, PTSD, and depression. Reina and the others are very stunned to hear that, and Ken tells them the facts about those mental illnesses. A bit later, Reina and the others understood what Ken had explained about and exchanged glances at one another.

"But don't worry, I'll prescribe medication for all of that," Ken assured them in response.

He then wrote down the names and brands of the medication they will be needing to combat Gen and Reina's mental illnesses.

The number of medicines reaches 7, and Ken added Cognitive Behavioral Therapy as another way to combat their mental problems.

Gen, Reina, and their allies agreed to whatever Ken says because they wanted to take action against the looming effects of mental illness.

So, Gen sent Nato and his squad of armed men to scour the Tokyo Metropolitan Area to buy and acquire all of the necessary medication he and Reina will be needed to treat their mental illnesses, while he and Reina are in a CBT session with Ken for the day. Arashi took care of overseeing its operations against the zombies in Japan so Gen would be in his therapy session with Ken. In that CBT session, Gen and Reina interacted with Ken openly, and Ken suggested some coping techniques so they could combat their mental storms brewing in their minds. The two listened and took those suggestions in their hearts.

After that, Reina and Gen began to reflect on their past actions. Gen admitted to Reina that his zombies had killed his parents. Reina, who already knew that before, understood it. Gen was remorseful for his actions and asked Reina for forgiveness.

"It's okay," replied Reina calmly and humbly, "I forgive you. I am sorry for killing you, too. I was so focused on my quest for revenge that I lost the sight of who I was."

Gen then hugged him tightly. "It's okay. I forgive you. I am sorry, too, so we're even."

Reina was moved by his words and teared up, before hugging him back.

After that, they both established their alliance to stop and reverse the zombie outbreak. Gen promised to find and make a cure for the zombie virus.

"Okay, I'll help fight the zombies." Reina agreed in response, serious about his new thing to do.

 "Can you fight?" Gen asked.

"I can use blades like swords and katanas."

"Sure, I can train you in that."

Reina readily accepted it. "Yes! Let's do this."

Gen smiled. "Let's do this before I would research for the cure."

And so, they are now working together.
