Gravity Dominion

Barely surviving in the slums of a broken down city, Yune lived day to day, his mind preoccupied with one thought: ‘Will I be able to eat something today?’. Living in this small bubble created by the immoral reality of the slums, Yune had never expected his horizons to be widened after being chosen by the marking phenomenon. With a unique power having been bestowed upon him, Yune quickly realised just how small of a world he was living in as the harsh reality of a war between different worlds was made known to him. With six portals leading to other worlds having appeared on earth, humanity was now more united than ever, fighting against otherworldly creatures from invading earth and even invading other worlds themselves to proclaim them ours.

Majorana Powers

Hearing that they were going to be taught combat tomorrow, the students had now become filled with energy from excitement, storming off to finish their last day of strength training.

All except for one student, Yune, who was still standing before Noah Cain with a conflicted expression on his face.

"What is it?" Noah Cain asked as he saw Yune not running with the others.

Yune didn't immediately answer however, looking hesitant to say something. He was still debating whether to ask Noah Cain a question that was burning on his mind.

With Yune's information about marks having steadily grown, a lot of questions had also formed and began lingering in Yune's mind, but there was one question in particular that he couldn't shake off.

The question burning on his mind being: Why can I only decrease my weight?

'I have powers over gravity, so I should be able to also increase gravity, thus increasing my weight. So, why can't I increase my gravity? Whenever I use mana at the moment, it just immediately decreases the gravity.' Yune thought continuously.

Despite having spent a considerable amount of time at the library, Yune hadn't managed to find an answer to this question. Even Alvin couldn't give an answer to Yune, and because Yune wasn't allowed to ask any question in theoretical class, he had nowhere else he could get answers from.

So, Yune's only hope now was that Noah Cain could had an answer to this question.

Until this point, Yune was hesitant to ask Noah Cain, because Alvin had told Yune that it would be better to keep his power a secret as showing a new type of mark, and power altogether, could bring a lot of problems with it.

Trusting Alvin, Yune didn't ask Noah Cain until now even though he also trusts him as his teacher. But now, after careful consideration, Yune he had finally figured out a way to ask this question without revealing anything about his mark.

And now, Yune had finally made his decision.

"Mister Cain, I have a question." Yune said, a pretty serious expression on his face.

"Yes Yune, please ask your question." Noah Cain said in a natural tone.

"Hypothetically speaking, if someone has a body strengthening mark, with which they can enhance their muscle strength to lift more weight, can they also weaken their muscle strength?" Yune asked just like he prepared, word for word.

Noah Cain looked quite taken aback by this question. "Do you have a body strengthening mark? Wait, no- Never mind, that is beside the point. Why would someone want to decrease their muscle strength on purpose?" Noah Cain said quite frantically.

Yune got a little shocked when Noah Cain first started answering his question, the conversation tending to lean towards Yune's mark, but luckily Noah Cain saw Yune getting uncomfortable by this and decided not to pry any further.

Yune was ecstatic that Noah Cain steered away from that topic, happily answering Noah Cain's question as he had also prepared an answer to this. "If for example strength training is getting too easy, than can they decrease their muscle strength to make training harder and get more results with the same workout. Is that possible?" Yune asked confidently, thinking this answer was clever and inconspicuous.

"I knew you were determined Yune, but I didn't know you were this determined." Noah Cain said, shortly after bursting out in laughter as he never heard someone want to make his workout harder before.

Gaining back his composure after seeing that Yune was serious about this, Noah Cain thought about how to answer this question and soon came up with a suitable answer. "The simple answer to your question is yes, I think. But you probably want to know more, right?"

"Yes please!" Yune said excitedly after finding out Noah Cain had an answer to the question that was burning in the back of his head for a little over a week now.

"Well, the theoretical explanation is that some types of mana are considered Majorana particles, being something like matter and antimatter at the same time. So, if the matter part of the mana particle can increase the muscle strength, than the antimatter part can weaken the muscle strength in theory. But I don't know if that is the case for the body strengthening mark though." Noah Cain explained.

"So not all marks can be used in opposite ways?" Yune asked as more questions started to pop-up in his head, only half understanding what Noah Cain said after having heard him say a lot of words he had never heard of before.

"Which marks can work in two ways?" Yune asked after a few seconds of putting some pieces together in his mind.

This time again, Noah Cain took a few seconds before he answered. "Well, for one, the basic elemental powers tend to only work one way such as fire, water, earth, wind and so on. And for the ones that work in two ways, well there isn't a way to group them together as they don't really have anything in common, not to my knowledge at least." Noah Cain added, as he wasn't really the academic type.

"A few examples of Majorana powers are the power over light, speed, time, and my own power: healing. There are probably a few others, but these are the ones I know from the top of my head." Noah Cain said.

Hearing this, Yune was deep in thought debating whether his powers would work in both ways. 'Well, my power isn't an elemental one. So, that raises my chances!' Yune thought positively. 'From the Majorana powers that mister Cain listed, time might be the closest to my power of gravity, I think…'

Interrupting his thoughts, Yune suddenly heard Noah Cain yell in his ear. "Now get back to strength training, Yune!" Noah Cain suddenly said as a good few minutes had already passed since class had begun.

Startled by this, Yune immediately started running towards the dice and rolled it, quickly going back to strength training. But even now, Yune was still deep in thought, thinking about whether his powers could work both ways.

For the remainder of the four hour class, this question kept Yune's mind busy.

After a while Yune had already concluded that his power were likely to be a Majorana power, but not having enough information, he didn't know for sure.

Giving up hope for getting a definite answer through thinking about it any longer without any more information, Yune decided to try a more practical approach.

Midway through the class, Yune had decided not to roll the dice and instead opted to do the thirty pull-ups to get ten minutes of rest. This way Noah Cain couldn't say anything to Yune about not doing strength training as this was a rule he had added.

Using these ten minutes, Yune had yet again walked up to Noah Cain as he had said that he also had a Majorana type power and decided to ask him how he had found out how to use his powers in opposite ways.

Unfortunately Yune didn't receive the answer he was looking for. Noah Cain's answer being: "I don't really know, when I thought about it one day, I just knew how to use it."

This answer not being helpful to Yune one bit, he went back to a more experimental approach.

Throughout the remaining two hours of class, and even after class, Yune just began trying to use his mana whilst thinking that he wanted to increase the gravity instead of reducing it, trying to visualize it as best as possible.

But no matter how much he tried, Yune just didn't manage to use his mana to increase gravity. The one thing that was especially frustrating, was that there was no way of tracking his progress as using the flipside of his powers was just something that either happened or not.

And unlike last time, the sixth sense that he developed when first using mana, was not helping in the slightest. At this point, Yune began to think that it might be all up to luck.

But unfortunately, Yune didn't have any luck.

Now lying in his bed, Yune was still trying. Frustrated by his inability, Yune kept trying untill he fell asleep somewhere around midnight, unknowingly being more fatigued than he had thought, forced to stop practicing.
