Give Me A Break

Vic and Meghan are childhood best friends. Both vowed to take care of each other when they were still young. Soon… both of them grew up, sharing happiness and sadness together. As Meghan grew up as a pampered child, she always gets everything she wants. But for Vic, he grew up in a hard way as everything must be done by himself so he became matured and independence. Meghan moved into Vic’s house when she had a fight with her housemates for one silly reason, she wanted to go to Paris with them but they gave her lots of excuse not to go along. She felt hurt and went straight to someone whom she knew won’t make her in pain, Vic. Even though Vic told her for millions times not to act so childish but she stubbornly refused to move back. As her best friend, he just shrugged it off, maybe already knew her since young and let her taking the empty room in his place. Like a happy little girl, she agreed to follow few rules made by him. One, don’t make the place in mess. (Meghan always throws her belonging everywhere but because of this rule, she has to collect back all the things as Vic refuses to pick them up or he will pick them up but straight away throws them into the dust bin.) Second, don’t bring anyone to the house especially boyfriend. (Vic doesn’t like anyone especially man to come into his house without his permission as the house looks more like a crazy one with Meghan loves to put the flowers and things she receive all around the living room and other rooms, even making Vic’s things ‘disappear’ under her things.) Third, don’t bring any reporter to the house and no photo shooting in any part of the house. (Vic hates reporters very much.) Fourth, if she wants to go somewhere for few days, tell him first so he won’t need to cook for two. (Meghan can cook but she just pushes the responsibility to Vic, too lazy) Fifth, never tell anybody where she lives or with whom she lives with. (Vic expects Meghan to respect his privacy as he does to her.)

A vow

He looked at himself, gulping. He just wore a nice shirt and pants but still feeling nervous. This is the first time he will go to her house, to celebrate her birthday.

He rang the bell, waiting nervously. A few moments later a woman came to the gate, looking at him.

"Is this… is this Meghan's house?" he stammered. The woman lifted an eyebrow, looking at him from top to toe.

"Vic, you've come…" Meghan ran to him, opening the gate. The maid just kept silent, watching her pulling him inside.

"Your house so big…" Vic murmured slowly. Meghan smiled, leading him into the living room. There were already other people there. Vic gulped, looking at the kids there wearing expensive clothes, tuxedos, dresses, and gowns. Even Meghan, she wore a very nice golden gown with a tiara on her head.

"Tell daddy I can blow the candles now…" Meghan told her mom. Her mom looked at Vic, chuckling.

"You must be her hero, right? She kept telling us endlessly that there is a hero in her school." Vic gulped, feeling his cheeks turning red. Meghan groaned, tugging her mother.

"Mummy, don't make him afraid. I had to follow him everywhere to make him agree to come here…" Meghan moaned. Her mother chuckled.

"Okay, okay. Vic, you do know her behaviour, right? I go tell your dad now." Meghan clapped her hands, smiling at Vic.

"You… you tell about me to them?" She nodded.

"You are my hero. I must thank you," she explained cheerfully. Vic sighed.

Meghan pulled Vic to stand next to her as she smiling happily, listening to others singing the birthday song. She took a very deep breath and blew all the candles.

"Happy birthday, Meghan," he wished, giving her a small box. Her eyes opened wide.

"Can I open it?" she asked excitedly. He scratched his back nape, gulping.

"Yeah, I guess…" he replied. His heart was beating so fast, knowing that every attention is at the present he gave.

"A book?" she asked, taking out a book. Vic nodded slowly. He knew that she hates to read but he just wants her to read more. Other began to laugh. Meghan bitted her lower lip before pulling her dad's hand.

"Daddy, stop them," she said. Her daddy chuckled, signalling them to stop laughing. Meghan quickly took a plate from her mother with a piece of cake. She pulled Vic out, to the garden.

"You don't like the book I bought?" he asked slowly as both sitting on the grass. She smiled.

"I don't mind even if you don't give me anything as long as you come here tonight," she said, smiling.

"Look, so pretty…" she clapped her hands excitedly. He looked at the star she pointed, the brightest star among other stars.

"Yeah," he replied, smiling.

"Hey, let's make a vow…" she said excitedly. He looked at her, frowning.

"What kind of vow?" he asked. She smiled, taking his hand, putting against his chest. Then, she did the same to herself.

"Let's make a vow that we will help each other until forever…" He shrugged.

"I don't know…"

"Oh… just say that from now on until forever we will take care of each other as we care ourselves…" she clapped her hands for her brilliant idea. He sighed heavily.

"One two three… let's say," she urged. Taking a deep breath, he nodded.

"From now on, until forever, we will take care of each other as we care ourselves," both said at the same time with their hand on their chest. Meghan clapped her hands, excited.

"You won't make me sad, right?" she asked him. Sighing heavily, he just nodded slowly. She clapped her hands happily.
