After Sheriff Dan Tashtego instructed them to stay at the hotel and remain vigilant, David, along with his deputy Dana, waited patiently inside, their guard up as ordered.
As time passed, the once-busy hotel began to empty out.
Only a few customers lingered, scattered among the tables.
The same lady who had previously warned them about the car being tampered with now served the two cops strong, freshly brewed coffee.
Meanwhile, Trish and Darry sat at a back table in the last row, quietly waiting for the food they had ordered.
Although the cryptic calls and the officer's earlier disbelief hinted that the situation they were caught in was far from ordinary, they felt a slight sense of relief knowing that two armed officers were present to protect them from whatever danger loomed.
cree~ cree~
"This is Tim... This is Tim... The suspected old church is on fire. I repeat, the suspected old church is on fire. Requesting backup... Over."
cree~ cree~
The tense calm in the hotel shattered as the walkie-talkies on both David's and Dana's shoulders crackled to life with the urgent voice of an officer.
"____"
"____"
Both cops immediately straightened, their relaxed demeanor vanishing.
David pressed the button on his walkie-talkie with a grim expression.
"This is David. Report the situation. Over."
cree~ cree~
"This is Tim... I received an order from the control room to investigate the old church on East 9 Highway... I suspect the culprit has already left the scene. Over. Wait! Who are—"
cree~
bang~ bang~
Tim's response was cut short by the sound of panic in his voice, followed by gunshots.
The abrupt end to the call sent a chill through everyone in the hotel.
cree~ cree~
"Tim, are you there? I repeat, Tim, are you there?"
Dana frantically tried to reconnect, her voice sharp with urgency.
Everyone present in the hotel, including the siblings, was frozen, their eyes fixed on the deputies.
silence~
"____"
But all Dana received was silence. The absence of any response from the other end deepened the tension in the room.
The air in the hotel started to get heavy. No matter how much both Dana and David tried to contact Tim, all they received was silence.
Cree~
"Now, I don't care what the weatherman says
When the weatherman says it's raining
You'll never hear me complaining, I'm certain the sun will shine
I don't care how the weather vane points
When the weather vane points to gloomy
It's gotta be sunny to me, when your eyes look into mine..."
Cree~
The silence was broken by a classic old song being played on the other side, which made Darry's eyes widen in shock.
"It's that song... the mysterious lady has warned us about."
Standing from his seat in a hurry, Darry exclaimed with clear fear visible in his voice.
Crash~
With a crashing sound, the signal was completely cut off from Tim's side.
"Calm down, Mr. Jenners. We will look into the situation."
Looking at Darry, who was once again beginning to panic, Dana consoled him with clear worry visible on her face.
Ring... ring...
The next second, David's phone started to ring.
When he answered the call with a solemn expression, the forensic officer's voice came from the other end.
"David... the hand imprint we took before from the car belongs to dead skin. That's why it looked like powder."
The forensic officer informed them with a serious tone while examining the test result in his hand.
"Dead???"
Hearing this, David asked confusedly.
"Yeah... not just dead... dead for a long time."
With an understanding confirmation, the forensic officer corrected David to make him realize how old the dead cells in the hand imprint were.
Sigh~
"Unfortunately, I couldn't find whose handprint it is."
With a little regret, the forensic officer completed his report, and the call ended.
Vroom~
After the call ended, suddenly the same old rusty truck moved past the shop at high speed.
"That was his truck."
Darry, who caught a glimpse of the caravan, immediately became alert and shouted, pointing at the highway.
"Stay here... Dana, I will go and check."
Hearing Darry's words, not wasting a moment, David stood from his place and told Dana to stay and protect the siblings while he went to check on the old rusty truck that had just passed the hotel.
"Sir... Sheriff Dan Tashtego asked us not to leave this hotel until he arrives with backup."
Seeing that David was intending to follow the old rusty truck, Dana tried to convince him about the warning of Sheriff Dan Tashtego.
But David didn't listen to her. He just placed his hand on the gun holster, signaling to Dana that he wouldn't hesitate to shoot if he really encountered the culprit.
Five minutes later...
It had been five minutes since he left in pursuit of the old rusty truck that passed the hotel.
But still, he hadn't caught a single sight of the old rusty truck before him or around the area until his eyesight reached its limit.
He was now moving at high speed, but even though he couldn't find any traces of the truck...
Cree~
"Now, I don't care what the weatherman says
When the weatherman says it's raining
You'll never hear me complaining, I'm certain the sun will shine
I don't care how the weather vane points
When the weather vane points to gloomy
It's gotta be sunny to me, when your eyes look into mine
Jeepers Creepers, where'd ya get those peepers?
Jeepers Creepers, where'd ya get those eyes?
Gosh all git up, how'd they get so lit up?
Gosh all git up, how'd they get that size?
Golly gee! When you turn those heaters on, woe is me
Got to get my cheaters on, Jeepers Creepers
Where'd ya get those peepers? On, those weepers
How they hypnotize, where'd ya get those eyes?
Where'd ya get those eyes? Where'd ya get those eyes?"
With a screeching sound, the radio in the car automatically turned on, and once again the old classic song started to play, with little disturbances coming from time to time.
"____"
Looking at the radio that had turned on automatically, David was stunned.
He was really sure he turned off the radio after hearing Darry mention about this song to avoid being targeted by the creeper.
Gulp~
Thud~ thud~
SCREEEEEECH~
While David's attention was on the radio, suddenly something dropped on top of the moving car, shaking its momentum.
Gulp~
But he didn't stop the car. He continued to drive forward while starting to sweat.
He could clearly tell by the sound that someone had landed on top of his car.
But there were no big trees on the way, nor any vehicles that one could jump from to another.
It was like someone jumped from the sky.
He slowly lowered the window glass and reached for the car's side view mirror, turning it slightly upwards.
He was trying to get a view of the top of his car to see who had landed on the roof.
But all he could see were old boots, not the full view of the creeper.
Ch~ ch~
While holding the steering wheel in one hand, David took his gun from the holster and loaded it.
Thud~
With a thud, an axe cut through the roof as if it were butter, just in time for David to dodge it by moving sideways, just before the axe could pass through the middle of his head.
SCREEEEEECH~
The car started to lose control and moved in a zigzag pattern, screeching as it did.
No matter how much the car moved, it couldn't shake off the creeper who was standing on top of the car.
Crack~
Suddenly, a dark hand, which seemed like some kind of preserved dead hand, started to tear through the roof using the cut the axe had made a moment ago, like it was opening a gift box.
"____"
Just then, David saw the appearance of the creeper for the first time, which made his eyes widen in shock.
A tall, muscular, and imposing figure, with a broad chest and powerful limbs that suggested immense physical strength, standing around 6'3" to 6'6".
Its hands were long and clawed, with sharp talons capable of ripping through flesh and other materials.
Its skin was dark, leathery, and rough, resembling a reptilian or bat-like texture.
The skin appeared aged and otherworldly, further emphasizing its supernatural nature.
The creeper had human-like eyes but shifted to a predatory, animalistic glare when it looked at David, who was driving the car, staring at it with fear—indicating it was ready to hunt him down.
Its nose was flat and bat-like, with nostrils suited for detecting prey through fear and adrenaline.
Grin~
The creeper often displayed a menacing grin while looking at the frightened David.
It revealed a mouth full of sharp, fang-like teeth.
Its jaws could unhinge like a snake's, allowing it to consume larger pieces of flesh, and its pointed and bat-like features contributed to its demonic aesthetic.
The creeper wore a dark, tattered trench coat and a wide-brimmed hat, which gave it a sinister, almost human-like appearance when viewed from a distance.
Bang~ bang~
Bang~
Feeling panicked, David didn't hesitate. He pointed his gun at the creeper, who grinned at him, and started shooting.
Graaa~
Feeling the impact of the bullet, the creeper let out a visible scream, indicating the bullet had caused damage to it.
Break~
With a sudden break, the creeper finally fell to the ground.
But before David could breathe a sigh of relief, the creeper, who had fallen due to the sudden break, quickly stood up.
Ting~ ting~
Ting~
The area where the bullet had pierced moments ago started to heal at a visible rate, and the bullets in its body fell to the ground one by one, ineffective.
"____"
Looking at the creeper, who was eyeing him menacingly and clearly pissed off by the shootout earlier, David knew it was about to attack again with its axe.
Bonk~ bonk~
"Hey, move away from him!"
An old car arrived behind the creeper while the flashlight was still on, showing the creeper's full appearance.
An elderly man carrying a shotgun stepped out of the car, pointed his gun at the creeper, and warned him.
