Further from the light

The duchy of Goldhart has four viable heirs, so it makes no sense for the late duchess to have given it to her. Nonetheless Allisyn is now the next duchess, whether they like it or not and with her coming of age ball she is hoping to find a suitable man to stand by her side. But love is not all sunshine and rainbows, a lesson she will learn the hard way. The only problem now is that with every bump and thorn in her way, Allisyn falls deeper into the darkness

Happiness is the one thing that I can never fully acquire

Alisyn Marigold Goldhart, only daughter of Maximus Goldhart vii, the richest noble after the king. Everyone outside their household expected the girl to be spoiled and happy, except she wasn't. No, this is not the classical case of the evil stepmother trying to ruin their step child's life, because maybe that would have been better. At one point she even prayed for an evil aunt instead of what she got, because it was that much worse.

You see, except for her being the only daughter of a duke, the really was nothing special about her birth. She had four brothers, two before her and two after her, so she was always ignored in favour of the heirs. She was beautiful yes, but when put next to the other young nobles her age, she looked average. Her saving grace was her hair, lavender. On sunny days it looked like spring came and personally decided to bless her hair, going by it's colour and shine. As for talent, well she had none. She failed at most things that were traditionally feminine. She was bad at dancing, singing, drawing and acting. They tried all the instruments in the kingdom but none stuck. Her parents had dubbed her a lost cause.

Fast forward to when she was 14, and tradegy befell the Goldhart house. Her beloved mother, Mary Bethlia Goldhart fell ill and within a matter of days passed away, all without a proper diagnosis of her disease. What she left behind though, shook the whole house.

A will, where she explained that the house Goldhart was bankrupt and were only still standing thanks to her endless financial support. It was also thanks to the support she provided, that she was now recognised by the king as the owner of the Goldhart duchy. With that said, she was now leaving every single estate she owns to her daughter Allisyn Marigold Goldhart. To her sons she left behind the jewellery she owned, to be divided among the boys. To her husband, she left nothing except a letter which he chose to read in private.

Most of the house, including the servants, were shocked. Lady Mary and Allisyn were never close, even when Alli was younger, there was always a barrier separating the two. She often left the girl to her own devices while she doted on her sons. Her brothers were given sweet nicknames while she remained just Allisyn. Her brothers were read bedtime stories and given a forehead kiss by her personally while Allisyn had to settle for a nanny. Allisyn at one point had thought her mother resented Her, afterall she was not remarkable like her brothers. She was not charming, talented or stunning like them. Imagine her surprise when the woman who never gave you anything but the bare minimum of parental affection suddenly leaves all her estates and riches to you with no explanation whatsoever.

She admits she expected her brothers to be furious, but she did not think it would reach this level, her getting stabbed with a poisoned knife by a servant less than a week later. Same servant who would be found floating in their pond, multiple holes all over his body.

This is my first time writing here, so please leave a comment. I prefer comments to likes as they can help improve my work. The first chapter is background information for the story, going forward there will be more dialogues

Also when I write original works, I want all my readers to imagine themselves in the protagonist's place, that's why the physical descriptions are usually so vague.
