Flames of redemption

"You're such a bastard!" "I am a bastard," he agreed, leaning even closer to her, "but I'm your bastard, kitten." Someone who's not average, not ordinary, not trying to fit in, not....'normal', as defined by society. And deep inside, she felt the weight of eyes upon her, watching her every move. Questions lingered and haunted her mind: Who was the observer? And what motives laid behind those captivating gazes?

Chapter 9

Regan drove herself to school furiously. Either she was frustrated with herself for not doing the assignment, or was frustrated with the dream she saw. Add up her sore neck. She felt like a fool. When she reached the school, she walked through the hallways. They were filled with students and they all were giving her disdainful looks. She didn't know why the hell they couldn't just stop looking at her.Her first class was literature itself. When she entered the class, Vesper was already sitting at the desk. The assignment affected Regan's grade with a high percentage. She hoped that there would be a way to cover up for her irresponsibility. As soon as Vesper saw the girl, she spoke with a cheer, "Mrs. Turner is absent today! Thankfully, we won't listen to her boring lessons!""You aren't joking?" Regan asked unsure."Of course not!""Well, that's amazing!" Regan said, and smiled. That raised her mood a bit. It was a relief that Mrs. Turner was absent. The essays would be graded the next time and Regan could make up for her mistake. She thanked God and smiled once more. The other class was math and they both attended.***It was lunchtime and she was bothered to go to the cafeteria. She didn't have any appetite. In fact, she didn't have a big appetite. She wasn't over the fact of the inexplicable flames on Olivia's hair. How did the flames fell on her? Who was even that brave to prank her that way?"Regan, come on, I'm hungry!" Vesper caught her arm and tried to get her to stand from the chair.Regan stood up, dusting her purple pants. She didn't want to go there at all but she didn't have what to do.When they entered the cafeteria, she sat down instead of going to get food. Vesper was the one who was doing that.Regan buried her face in her phone, avoiding looking or being looked at.She looked up once, noticing that Olivia had appeared along with her best friends. Her bodyguards, they were everywhere with her, all after her.Olivia's hair were only trimmed a bit shorter. Other than that, there wasn't something bad about them.Regan let down a sigh of relief and she placed her phone on the table.Olivia walked around with her friends until she stopped at a table somewhere in the middle of the big space. She leaned over and kissed a blond guy. From what Regan could see, this guy was Nate, the one who Olivia earlier accused Vesper for stealing him from her.Regan looked at her phone again, avoiding looking at the cringe scene that everyone was so fond of.She didn't notice Vesper, who was sitting with an angry expression. She had bought a burger for herself and two sodas, which Regan earlier told her to buy one. Vesper frowned, her expression dark."Pathetic humans," she sneered.Regan knew that Nate was the popular guy. She had seen him everywhere. But she never saw him with Vesper since that day when he flirted with her."Piece of shit," Vesper cursed.Regan heard her but didn't reply. She fell in her thoughts again, that time she thought about the unknown voice in her head and the creature, that she apparently knew in the dream. She was having a headache about all that and she felt like a fool."Let's stop talking about Olivia, what about you?" Vesper asked with a mischievous smirk."What about me?" Regan asked in confusion, not looking at her."What's all that grumpy look of yours? Did you fall in love or what?" Vesper scoffed.Regan choked hard on her drink, this was literally the most unpredictable thing that she expected her to say."Ew....what love?" Regan sneered.Vesper let out a loud laugh, at seeing her friend's reaction."Relax, I was joking," she said, while controlling her laugh."I didn't sleep and my neck and head hurt," she mumbled."So that's what I'm asking. Why are you lacking sleep? And what about your neck? She didn't know how she got a sore neck. She didn't want to think about it. The more she thought, the more terrified she was. It seemed as if her mind was trying to make the headache worse."I studied late in night and then feel asleep on the couch.""Sure you did," Vesper said, her voice dripping with sarcasm.Their conversation went off for a while. It wasn't really noticeable. The crowd in the cafeteria made enough sound to have what to listen to.While on that, Regan kept looking at her phone, although her mind was to the mysterious guy who apparently was trying to kill her. She couldn't get him out of her mind. She tried to find a reason why he seemed familiar. She couldn't focus on anything else."Did you snap out?" Vesper's voice snapped her out of thoughts."Huh?""You're so lost. If you keep doing this, the lesson will start and you'll be here, still.""The bell hasn't rung yet," said Regan.Vesper chuckled and suggested that they should go to the library to find some useful books. Regan was very fond of the idea. At least, she needed something else to think about. They both got up from the table and walked in the school's halls. The library was a large area with a lot of book sections. Regan didn't know what kind of books Vesper liked. But as for herself, she was an extremely picky reader. She'd rather not read than cost time to a book that in the end wouldn't end the way she wanted. However, she still loved to read. The librarian smiled at them, raising her glasses and telling them to continue. It was the first time she got there with Vesper.Vesper separated her way as she disappeared behind a long bookcase. Regan on the other side, ran her hand through some books, but no one was appealing to her.Maybe just her favorite genres weren't there. It was a pin drop silence. She realized that she was a bit far from where the librarian was, even though the woman could still be seen.Vesper wasn't seen anywhere. At this moment, Regan felt as if she was being watched. This feeling reoccurred to her, through the days, and she figured out that it didn't depend on where she was or with who she was.The girl started to panic, and she quickly got a catchy book, that she had been observing for a while. Then, she almost ran to the librarian desk, but managed to not make it look weird. She sat on the couch nearby and waited for Vesper to come. The weird thing was that her friend came from the door, indicating she wasn't in the library at all."Where were you?" Regan asked confused."Just around. You didn't notice me," she replied. Vesper held two old books in her hands. For some reason, looking at their old cover, which seemed similar to those of manuscripts, Regan found them intriguing."What are these?" She asked, when she got up and leaned over to see the books. She caught only the title of one, "Charms and Manipulation". The book had a green cover and the title was written in Gothic style.Vesper quickly flinched the books away, not allowing Regan to see anymore, who huffed annoyed in response."I'm going to get these," she said as she handed the thick books on the librarian's desk. The curious girl tried to see more about the books, but the other girl kept the view blocked."Where did you get these?" The librarian asked, weirded out when she looked at the books."In the library, where else?" Vesper said, like obvious. The librarian looked at the books with uncertainty."Why are you interested in these? They aren't even written by a proper author.""I want to read them. Is there a problem, Mrs Beth?" Vesper asked, her voice tingled with annoyance.Regan, who was hearing their conversation, wondered about the books. That title was intriguing."Probably psychology books," she thought.Mrs Beth, looked at Vesper with a reproachful look and sighed. She brought up some notes, where she registered the books that Vesper got. Then, Vesper got them and stuffed them inside a bag that Regan just noticed. The librarian registered the book that Regan got, and they went out of the library."Vesper, what are these books about?" The girl asked."Just psychology books, nothing important. My sister needs to read them," said Vesper, her eyes on her phone."Which section did you get them from?""I'll tell you when we go again."The girl nodded and walked to the classroom. The books seemed very interesting to her.
