All the wedding guests had left, and our family began to tidy up, making sure all the borrowed tables, chairs, bowls, and dishes from yesterday were packed up to be returned. There were customs to be observed, such as not returning these items empty. We had to fill them with sunflower seeds, candy, or some of the better leftover dishes – only then was it considered proper. Mrs. Chen hurriedly sorted the items to be returned, and then Wenhan and the others started making the rounds to return them.

It took a busy morning to return everything. By late noon, those who had accompanied the bridal procession had come back, and Mrs. Chen couldn't help asking how things were on the other side.
