The test was simple. The fire had been burning steadily for a while now, with oil poured over it to keep the flames alive. The herd of deer remained on the other side of the moat, so the plan was to toss a torch across and see how they reacted.

If the deer scattered, their plan might just work.

Quin stood atop the castle wall, peering down at the animals clustered on the far side of the moat. Holding a torch in his hand, he pulled his arm back, then hurled it over. His first throw fell short, landing just shy of the creatures. Adjusting his angle and force, Quin tried again. This time, the torch landed squarely among the deer.

The flames instantly caught onto one of the creatures. It shook violently, trying to dislodge the torch, but the holy flame had already latched onto its body. The sacred fire wasn't easily quenched—it didn't rely on air, couldn't be doused with water, and once it caught, it didn't let go.
