RATE AND REVIEW

MAYA'S POV...

" It's a deal, after two years you pay back" Mr Raymond said and I smiled. I knew I needed the money badly but I couldn't just accept it like that. It would mean there was no difference between myself and a beggar.

" Thank you very much sir" I said happily.

" You can go" he said and I took the cheque and left the office to my office.

I finally had enough money for dad's treatment and payment of Lilly's school fees. I held the cheque tightly as I walked to my office where I sat and took a cup of water to wash my system. I sighed of relief. Why did people think of Mr Raymond as a cold and arrogant man when in actual fact, he was the nicest there was? I now understood the saying, do not judge a book by its cover.

I decided to call mum and inform her of the good news.

" Hey Maya, how are you?" Mum asked over the phone.

" I'm fine mum, I have good news" I said happily.

" And what's that?" She asked

" My boss just gave me a cheque of half a million and now we can pay off all our debts and then by more goods so you can make more cookies and cakes" I said happily.

" Oh my gosh, is this true?" She asked " this means we can finally get your dad operated on right?" She asked and I could hear how happy she was over the phone. Who wouldn't be? Receiving a cheque of half a million was like a plane of good luck crashing right on our roof top. Now, I didn't need to keep my dinner from the office as a take home to share with the family because we didn't have enough because now we would be able to live a comfortable life like my late sister, Liliana had always wanted.

" Yes mum" I said.

" Thank you Lord" I heard her say over the phone.

" Ok mum, I've got to go. I need to finish up something" I said

" Alright dear, bye" she said and hung up.

I started feeling pressed so I got up and headed to the restroom, leaving the cheque on the table. Probably the worst mistake I'd ever made.

Rose stared as Maya happily walked to her office with a cheque in her hand.

" So Mr Raymond gave her a cheque? I wonder why" she said as she followed Maya to her office. She watched as Maya called her mum and giggled excitedly, ranting about how she'd just received a cheque of half a million.

" We'll see about that Maya. The boss is mine and mine alone" she muttered to herself.

She saw Maya get up so she hid behind the door and waited for Maya to leave before she rushed into the office to see the cheque on the table.

" Wow, half a million. We'll see if you use it" she muttered to herself. She quickly took a paper and a scissors from her pocket. She placed the cheque on the paper and cut out the shape of the cheque before taking the cheque and leaving the paper on the table. She looked outside and was sure no one was coming before she rushed to the toilet and locked the door where Maya was.

She rushed to the cafeteria and took some ketchup before scurrying back to Maya's office. She shut the door behind her before pouring ketchup all over the paper, ruining it.

" That should do" she muttered to herself before covering the ketchup and rushing out of the office.

She went to her office and stared at the cheque in her hands, she had hit the jackpot.

" I might not be the one who Mr Raymond sleeps with but I'm definitely the lucky one because I just got half a million for doing nothing" she said to herself.

She quickly hid the cheque in her purse. She wasn't willing to make the same mistake Maya had made by leaving the cheque on the table.

" I'll soon be a millionaire" she said to herself before smiling evilly.

Maya continued to push the door in an attempt to open it but it just was not opening.

" What's wrong with this door?" She asked herself as she continued to push it. " Hello, help!!" She screamed as she banged on the door but no one was forthcoming.

Rose chuckled, she knew what she had done. She had locked the main door from the inside and Maya's restroom door from the outside which meant no one would be able to go in to help Maya and Maya wouldn't be able to help herself because her door had been jammed from the outside.

" That's what you get for taking Mr Raymond from me" she said to herself and left.

Maya continued to bang hard on the door but it was not opening.

" Help!! Anyone, help me" she screamed as she sat on the floor. Why didn't she take her phone with her?

She got up and started banging on the door again. " Anyone? Help me" she screamed and tears streamed down her cheeks.

She couldn't spend the night trapped in the restroom. How would the family feed that night?

She was still looking for a way of escape when she suddenly remembered something, she'd left the cheque on the table .

" Oh my goodness" she exclaimed after realizing the dangers of having left a cheque worth half a million on the table.

" Help!!!!!" She screamed.

Raymond smiled as he thought of Maya and her wonderful virtue. She'd shown that she had pride and respect for herself by refusing charity. He didn't have any intentions of taking back of money but he still respected her for the fact that she didn't beg for money and she still had some pride when she was given what she desperately needed.

He stared at his laptop and buried himself in his work for hours till he realized it was time for closure.

" I should call Maya and remind her to send those documents to Mr Josh" Raymond said to himself and took his office telephone before dialing Maya's office but there was no response.

" Why isn't she answering? She's always quick to answer" he thought to himself as he continued dialing her office.

After dialing for minutes, he decided to call her personal number from his own personal number. He continued to call but there still wasn't any response. It was unlike Maya so he decided to go check things out for himself.

He left his office to her office. " Maya" he called after walking into the office but found no trace of her.

He sighed before going to ask other employees of her where about but none knew where she was. He'd also asked Rose but she pretended to have no idea.

He hissed softly, " maybe she went home, i better get the file myself" he said to himself and went to her office only to see the cheque on her table, stained with ketchup.

He walked and picked it up, " this is the cheque I'd given Maya. Why is it here and why is ketchup on it? Is this why she left early? She didn't appreciate it so why take it?" He asked himself as he stared at the ketchup stained paper.

" Ungrateful bitch" he muttered to himself, scoffed before leaving the office.
