11. Dos Oruguitas, All of Me

The family sat back in their seats, Mirabel still wrapped up in the blankets.

As the movie continued, it showed Julieta staring at her daughter in concern. She still had said nothing since the house had fallen.

JULIETA- "Mirabel!"

PEPA- "Julieta, come quick!"

Pepa called out for her older sister, and Julieta was forced to choose. Leave her youngest here alone or find out what had her younger sister so upset. She didn't get too much time to choose.

PEPA- "Julieta!"

Pepa called out to her sister once again but this time much sterner.

JULIETA- "Don't move. I'll be right back."

She reassured her daughter before rushing off to her sister quickly.

PEPA- "How did this happen?"

Mirabel looked up at the sound of her Tía's voice. She saw the entire house, fallen to bits. She found a few of her family members now inside the ruble looking around at the destruction. Félix was comforting his eldest son before walking off to find who Mirabel assumed was the rest of his family.

As both Camilo and Tío Félix walked off it left Dolores and Abuela on the screen

DOLORES- "Here, let me help you. Let me help you."

Dolores gently helped Abuela sit on top of some of the debris before walking off to find the rest of her family.

The screen zoomed in on Abuela as she sat there. She stared at the new Casita, at their home, gone. Nothing but a fallen mess. Everyone could see the flurry of emotions swirling behind her eyes. Pain, confusion, regret, sorrow.

AGUSTĺN- "Everyone okay?"

PEPA- "Antonio, don't cry, papito. Don't cry."

FÉLIX- "How is this possible? The encanto's broken."

The family's confused and frantic comments filled the screen before switching back to Mirabel, who stared at her Abuela. Mirabel looked like she was about to break into tears.

PEPA- "What do we do now?"

CAMILO- "My powers. They're gone. I don't… What about Antonio? What is he going to do?"

The screen cut to Julieta, she pulled out a small box filled with even smaller bottles of what anyone could only assume were what was left of her magical gift. She turned around, looking for her daughter.

JULIETA- "Mirabel?"

Mirabel wasn't there. Mirabel wasn't where she was supposed to be.

JULIETA- "Mirabel!"

She called out again, this time with more volume. It caught the attention of Félix, who stopped his conversation to look at his cuñada. Once he had realised why she was calling out for his daughter he began to look around, hoping to catch a glance at her.

JULIETA- "Where's Mirabel? Where is she?"

Julieta's voice slowly became more desperate. As she called out for her daughter again.

JULIETA- "Mirabel!"

Once again the screen flashed away to Mirabel scaling the mountains of the encanto. She had tears falling down her face.

FÉLIX- "Mirabel?"

Félix's voice could be heard echoing from down below. Mirabel ignored it as she kept pushing forward. The screen began to pull away and zoom out as Mirabel walked through the fractured mountain.

FÉLIX- "Mirabel!"

His voice echoed on more time as Mirabel's silhouette disappeared from the frame leaving only a split mountain in it's shot.

"Mirabel, you left the encanto?" Her Mamá asked in concern.

Mirabel only nodded

The screen then faded to black, pulling a few confused comments from the family.

"That's it? That's the end?" Camilo said, waving his hands in front of himself.

"Aww. But I wanted to see more." Antonio cried, looking down. "That was a bad ending." He added. "It was so sad."

oOoOoOoOo

As everyone began to stand, ready to leave the home theatre, a faint voice pulled them all back.

LUISA- "Mirabel?"

Antonio gasped as the black screen slowly changed back to images.

LUISA- "Mirabel!"

Luisa could be seen in the distance searching for her sister. The camera then paned down to the three children.

The family rushed back to their seats ready to see how it ended.

FÉLIX- "Mirabel!"

Félix's voice could be heard in the distance, calling out for his sobrina. The fallen frame of the house could be seen in the background, seemingly untouched from the previous night.

CECILIA- "They haven't found her yet?"

She asked in concern. Her friends shaking their heads and looking down in concern.

oOoOoOoOo

The screen cut to Mirabel's parents calling out for their youngest child as they scaled a small hill.

AGUSTĺN- "Mirabel!"

JULIETA- "Mirabel!"

Just behind the house Félix and Dolores were also searching for Mirabel. Félix yelling out and Dolores straining her ears to hear the best she could.

FÉLIX- "Mirabel!"

oOoOoOoOo

Suddenly a thorny branch appeared on the screen. A pink thread in the shape of an 'M' sat on a thorn. A shadowed figure appeared before the scene changed again. Mirabel sat on the edge of a rock, her body all pulled together in a tight hug. Water ran gently from just below her.

The longer that the screen showed Mirabel, the closer she pulled her legs tighter to her chest and sob.

It zoomed in on Mirabel crying.

"What a flattering angle…" Isabela said sarcastically, trying to lighten the mood.

ABUELA- "Mirabel."

Abuela appeared from behind Mirabel. As she heard Abuela she pulled her head up slightly before wiping her tears away quickly. She then turned her head and body away from Abuela in a defensive manner.

MIRABEL- "I'm sorry."

She said, turning back straight forward as she did.

MIRABEL- "I didn't want to hurt us. I just wanted to be something I'm not."

Mirabel dropped her head back to her knees as she cried.

She could hear her family's upset at the comment.

Abuela looked at the river, then down at her granddaughter. She took a moment before walking towards her and sat down.

ABUELA- "I've never been able to come back here."

As she said that, Mirabel lifted her head just enough to be off of her knees. The screen cut to behind the two women. It showed the serene waterfall dripping down the small rocks, into the river itself.

"Where were the two of you?" Agustín asked, unfamiliar with the setting.

To answer his question Mirabel pressed play.

ABUELA- "This river is where we were given our miracle."

Gasps could be heard from the triplets as they realised exactly where the two on screen were.

MIRABEL- "Where Abuelo Pedro…"

Mirabel questioned, trailing off at the end not daring to finish her sentence.

ABUELA- "I thought we would have a different life."

A faint, almost ghostly figure appeared from behind Abuela. Walking past the two slowly becoming more and more opaque.

ABUELA- "I thought I would be a different woman."

The scene transitioned into young Alma walking through her hometown, before the encanto was built. She walked up to another lady who handed her a candle, which she accepted before continuing on her way.

A soft guitar tune played in the background as Alma stood up on a lamp post to gain a better view. When she did she saw a singular yellow butterfly flying above the citizens of the town.

As she watched the butterfly's path she saw it cross in front of a young man, similar to her own age. He saw it two. Watching the butterfly as it passed. As it left he noticed Alma staring as it flew by. He gave her a small wave and a smile, one which she happily returned. She slipped slightly, just managing to catch herself before she fell.

It cut back to Pedro laughing at Alma as she went, causing her to laugh too before shrugging.

"Is that?" Pepa asked.

"Papá." Bruno finished.

Background Music:

Dos oruguitas enamoradas

Pasan sus noches y madrugadas

The entire family watched as it showed the two eating food and laughing together by a fountain. The Madrigal triplets watching the closest. It had been the first, and only time, they had ever seen their parents together.

They had never seen their Mamá so happy.

Tears began to swell up in the triplets eyes, Abuela already lost with emotion.

The three began to cry, mourning for the father they never had. Mourning for their Mamá too.

The screen transitioned to the pair getting married. Both standing there in front of friends and family then to the two sharing their first kiss as husband and wife. Holding a white candle in their hands.

Llenas de hambre, siguen andando

Y navegando un mundo

Que cambia y sigue cambiando

Navegando un mundo

Que cambia y sigue cambiando

The image of the pair had been framed and placed on a bedside table before showing Alma picking up a small cut out image of a baby. Pedro sat on the bed with his eyes closed. As he opened them a large smile spread across his face.

Alma opened up the image of the baby to show that there were three. Pedro's mouth dropped open and his eye began to roll around before he dramatically fell backwards onto the bed.

Alma's face twisted into one of concern until she saw her husband laying eyes wide open, a goofy grin spread across his lips. She laughed before he pulled her down with him into a tight hug.

Dos oruguitas paran el viento

Mientras se abrazan con sentimiento

The screen changed again to show Alma holding her three babies as Pedro tenderly rubbed what everyone could only assume Julieta's head. Pedro then placed a hand behind Alma and began to say something to her before an orange flash behind them caused them to turn and look.

As they did they found multiple riders on horseback throwing lighted torches at a few of the homes before immediately riding off. People ran from the scene, fleeing as fast as they could.

Looks of horror filled the couples faces as they watched what was unfolding before them.

Siguen creciendo, no saben cuándo

It then showed a room with three cribs all sat in one corner as the duo closed the door and left.

Buscar algún rincón

El tiempo sigue cambiando

Inseparables son

El tiempo sigue cambiando

Alma, who held her triplets in her arms, walked ahead of the group with her husband beside her holding out a lantern, lighting the way. It showed them all walking around mountains, then cut to everyone crossing the river that Mirabel and Abuela were at.

Suddenly, multiple people began to run past the young family. Everyone scattered to get away from the impending danger. Alma and Pedro looked back to see what everyone was running from. Pure fear spread across their faces as Alma held her children that much closer to her chest.

A shot of four riders on horseback charging to their destination was shown.

Then back to Alma and Pedro. Pedro was seen yelling something out before running with his family, desperate to get away.

The two ran, ignoring those around them who fell, doing their best to put distance between them and the enemy.

Ay, oruguitas, no se aguanten más

Hay que crecer a parte y volver, hacia adelante seguirás

After a moment, Pedro stopped running, tears began to pool at his eyelids. Gently slowing Alma down, he looked at her for a moment before looking down at his children. Quickly he planted a kiss on each of their foreheads. He looked up at Alma before giving her a kiss, swiping his thumb across her cheek before saying something to her.

Upon realising what had been said to her Alma teared up, realising what her Pedro was going to do. He passed her the candle from their wedding day before walking away, towards the danger.

As Pedro disappeared from shot, Mirabel appeared. She watched the events unfold, her face in shock as she witnessed what her Abuelo was doing.

"No!" Pepa called out as she stood up and reached a hand out for her Papá.

Félix stood up, doing his best to console his wife.

Vienen milagros, vienen crisálidas

Hay quе partir y construir su propio futuro

Pedro walked towards the riders, his hands held in surrender. In return they all pulled out their machetes and aimed them at Pedro.

Ay, oruguitas, no se aguanten más

Hay que crеcer a parte y volver, hacia adelante seguirás

Vienen milagros,

Alma screamed out in anguish as she watched her husband die. Mirabel who was now standing in the scene couldn't believe what she was seeing. Alma fell to her knees in complete despair, holding her babies as she fell.

Vienen crisálidas

Hay que partir y construir su propio futuro

The candle that Pedro had handed to his love mere moments ago now sat on the ground. Magical golden sparks engulfed it as a beautifly pattern of butterflies appeared.

The magic that the candle had released flung the riders back.

Mirabel looked up at her surroundings to find mountains growing from the ground. The mountains of encanto. She turned back to see her Abuela in absolute hysteria, holding her babies. She looked up as the mountains grew taller and taller, concealing the river that now had so many painful memories attached.

She stood up, holding all of the children in one arm and holding the candle in the other hand. The townspeople now coming closer, all confused as to what had happened and to console Alma.

The candle then became the main focus of the frame, sitting on the windowsill. It slowly shifted to focus on Alma, who held her triplets in her lap. She gazed emptily towards the floor. Her gaze then shifted to her children, all sleeping softly.

Dos oruguitas desorientadas

En dos capullos bien abrigadas

Her gaze shifted upwards. Still empty but this time with more determination. It showed as Alma picked up her black shawl and exited her room, candle in her hand. When she did, Mirabel stood on the other side. A glowing door, the same as before you gain your gift glowed next to her. She looked down in shame as Abuela passed her.

ABUELA- "I was given a miracle."

As a beam passed through the shot, Alma then aged back to her current age now. A faint guitar still playing in the background.

ABUELA- "A second chance."

She passed her son. Her Bruno. Who stood beside his door, looking so small, so afraid. Desperate for his mother to notice him. She passed him without sparing a second glance. He looked down, upset as she passed.

Another beam showed on the screen, this time with Isabela standing next to her door, flowers surrounding the frame. As she passed, Isabela stood up straighter and put on a brave face.

Another beam.

ABUELA- "And I was so afraid to lose it,"

Luisa. Stood holding a large bag of something heavy. Similar to her sister, standing up straight. Desperate to please.

One final beam appeared as Abuela walked past. This time to a young Mirabel on her ceremony night as the door faded away.

ABUELA- "That I lost sight of who our miracle was for."

Mirabel turned to look at her Abuela, eyes widened in fear and confusion. So afraid of what she was going to say.

The only light that was now being emitted was that of the candle in Abuela's hands.

ABUELA- "And I am so sorry."

The candle in her hands disappeared and everything around her went blcack. Mirabel was gone now too.

ABUELA- "You never hurt our family Mirabel."

The darkness then changed to Abuela in the fallen remains of Casita as she fell to her knees.

ABUELA- "We are broken, because of me."

Abuela looked down in shame. Mirabel Stared at her Abuela, not sure what to say. She turned back to face the river, finding a yellow butterfly landing on a small reed sticking out of the water.

MIRABEL- "Abuela. I can finally see."

Mirabel held her hand out for her Abuela to take them, leading her towards the butterfly.

MIRABEL- "You lost your home."

She looked down at the butterfly, pausing before she continued.

MIRABEL- "Lost everything. You suffered so much, all alone, so it would never happen again. We were saved, because of you. We were given a miracle, because of you. We are a family, because of you. And nothing could ever be broken that we can't fix… together."

Mirable took her Abuela's hand, squeezing it just that little bit tighter. The sun began to come out from behind the clouds, shining brightly in the two women. Abuela smiled at Mirabel before coming to a realization.

ABUELA- "I asked my Pedro for help. Mirabel. He sent me you."

The two held each other in a tight embrace as the sun shone even brighter as though holding them tight too.

"So that's what I missed…" Bruno pointed at the screen, causing Abulea and Mirabel to laugh.

Background Music:

Ay, mariposas, no se aguanten más

Hay que crecer a parte y volver, hacia adelante seguirás

As the two pulled away they found themselves being surrounded but a kaleidoscope of butterflies. They looked upon them all in awe watching as they all flew towards the encanto.

Ya son milagros, rompiendo crisálidas

Hay que volar, hay que encontrar su propio futuro

As Mirabel helped Abuela out of the river a voice could be heard.

BRUNO- "She didn't do this! Woah! She didn't do this!"

Bruno appeared from the bush, riding on horseback. The two Madrigals stared at him, surprised. His unfortunate descent from the horse causing Antonio to fall into a fit of giggles

BRUNO- "I gave her a vision! It was me! Ah!"

He climbed off of the horse, not very well, but doing his best.

BRUNO- "I was like, 'go' and she was like, 'fshew'. She only wanted to help. I don't care what you think of me! But if you're too stubborn to…to…"

Bruno was cut off by his mother wrapping him up in a warm, tight hug. He looked down at his mother in shock.

ABUELA- "Brunito."

BRUNO- "I feel like I missed something important."

MIRABEL- "C'mon."

Abuela gave her son a kiss on the cheek before leading him back to the horse.

BRUNO- "What… What's happening? Where are we going?"

Bruno was completely confused. Mirabel took a breath out before a determined look spread across her face.

MIRABEL- "Home."

oOoOoOoOo

As Mirabel, Abuela and Bruno rode back on the horse the three children all yelled out.

COFFEE KID- "It's her! I found her!"

KID 3- "I found her!"

CECILIA- "She's back! She's back, she's back!"

The bells of the church began to ring out, signifying that Mirabel had been found.

oOoOoOoOo

Mirabel led the horse towards Casita, having it jump over a fallen tree. She took a look at the fallen house, taking in how damaged it truly was. She hopped off of the horse, ready to take an even closer look until her Mamá called out for her.

JULIETA- "Mirabel?"

She ran to try and find her Mamá. When they caught each other's eye, they ran to each other.

JULIETA- "Mirabel!"

The two wrapped each other in a tight hug.

MIRABEL- "Mamá."

JULIETA- "Mi amour, I was so worried. We couldn't find you."

Everyone watched as Agustín ran up to his wife and daughter.

AGUSTĺN- "There were bees, everywhere. I'll be okay."

CAMILO- "Uh… Not if we don't have a house."

Camilo pointed out from the background. Before being elbowed by his dad.

CAMILO- "What? I can't say we don't have a house. I can't say we don't have a house? What is that? Not a house."

"Camilo!" Everyone laughed as the turned to him.

"What?" Camilo said in a very similar tone to his on screen copy. "Am I not allowed to say the truth?"

Everyone laughed as Camilo kept trying to speak.

Mirabel:

(Singing)

Look at this home, we need a new foundation

It may seem hopeless, but we'll get by just fine

Mirabel hopped down from Casita's entrance, walking towards Isabela, she grabbed her hands and led her up, letting the family one by one ente the house.

Look at this family, a glowing constellation

So full of stars and everybody wants to shine

But the stars don't shine, they burn

And the constellations shift

Mirabel then noticed Luisa struggling to push a large piece of stone out of the way. She rushed to help her sister.

I think it's time you learn

You're more than just your gift

At those words, she could Luisa doing her best not to break down and give her sister a bone crushing hug.

Abuela:

And I'm sorry I held on too tight

Abuela joining in on the song pulled everyone's attention. More specifically her daughters who walked over to their Mamá

Just so afraid I'd lose you too

The miracle is not some magic that you've got

The miracle is you

From behind Abuela, Bruno popped out slightly. She walked over to her son and like Mirabel did for everyone else, she led him back home.

Both Pepa and Julieta gasped seeing their brother again.

Not some gift, just you, the miracle is you

Both of the girls rushed over to Bruno, who held his hand up in a small wave before Pepa picked her brother up in a tight hug. Julieta followed close behind and the three had finally reunited.

All:

All of you, all of you

Camilo:

Okay, so we gonna talk about Bruno?

Antonio:

That's Bruno?

Bruno:

Yeah, there's a lot to say about Bruno

I'll start, okay!

Pepa, I'm sorry 'bout your wedding, didn't mean to be upsettin'

That wasn't a prophecy, I could just see you were sweatin'

And I wanted you to know that your bro loves you so

Let it in, let it out, let it rain, let it snow,

let it go!

Félix:

(Speaking)

That's what I'm always saying, bro!

Bruno:

(Singing)

Got a lotta 'pologies I got to say

Julieta:

Hey! (Uh—) We're just happy that you're here, okay? (But—)

Pepa:

Come into the light

Agustín:

The triplets all reunite

Julieta & Pepa:

And no matter what happens we're gonna find our way

Dolores:

Yo, I knew he never left, I heard him every day

"That hurt by the way." Camilo whined to his older sister.

"Hey! That rhymed!" Antonio pointed out giggling.

Townspeople:

Oh-oh-oh, oh-oh-oh

Oh-oh-oh, oh-oh-oh

Abuela:

What's that sound?

Townspeople:

Oh-oh-oh, oh-oh-oh

Oh-oh-oh, oh-oh-oh

Antonio:

I think it's everyone in town

Townspeople:

Hey!

Lay down your load (Lay down your load)

We're only down the road (We're only down the road)

People from everywhere in the town came to the Madrigals all ready to help out and lend a hand.

We have no gifts, but we are many

And we'll do anything for you

Isabela:

It's a dream when we work as a team (All of you, all of you)

You're so strong,

Luisa:

Yeah, but sometimes I cry (All of you, all of you)

Isabela & Mirabel:

So do I

Luisa:

I may not be as strong, but I'm getting wiser

Isabela:

Yeah, I need sunlight and fertilizer

Come on, let's plant somethin' new and watch it fly

Isabela, Luisa & Mirabel:

Straight up to the sky, let's go!

"Hey look!" Antonio pointed out. "Camilo just dropped the shovel while trying to look cool." He giggled.

"Dude…" Camilo looked down at his brother with an offended gaze.

Mirabel & Julieta:

The stars don't shine, they burn

The constellations glow

The seasons change in turn

Julieta:

Would you watch our little girl grow?

"Um… Papi." Mirabel said.

Her father hummed in acknowledgement.

"You put the tile the wrong way round."

"So no one is going to talk about Tío Bruno with a bucket on his head?" Camilo asked.

"That's not Tío Bruno silly" Anotonio made a face at his brother.

"Oh really? Who is it then?"

"That's Jorge." He answered. "He makes the spackle."

Everyone laughed as Antonio remembered the word that Bruno had said to Mirabel earlier in the film.

Agustín:

She takes after you

Mariano:

Oh

Mirabel:

Hey, Mariano, why so blue?

Mariano:

I just have so much love inside

Mirabel:

You know, I've got this cousin too

Have you met Dolores?

"Where did she come from?" Bruno whispered to Mirabel. She shrugged before whispering back.

"She just kinda does that sometimes."

Dolores:

Okay, I'll take it from here, goodbye!

You talk so loud

You take care of your mother and you make her proud

You write your own poetry

Every night when you go to sleep

And I'm seizing the moment

So would you wake up and notice me?

Mariano:

(Speaking)

Dolores, I see you

Dolores:

And I hear you

A few 'awws' could be heard from the adults.

"I guess Marinao will be part of the Madrigals after all." Félix said as he winked at his daughter. The comment earning him a small smack on the arm from his wife and a stern look.

Isabela & Mirabel:

Yes!

The two girls high-fived as they realised their plan was working.

Townspeople:

(Singing)

All of you, all of you

Mariano:

(Speaking)

Let's get married!

Dolores:

Slow down!

Townspeople:

(Singing)

All of you, all of you

Finally Casita had been rebuilt. Sure, maybe there was no magic and it lacked the Madrigal flair that it had before. But it was nothing that they couldn't fix, together.

Mirabel:

Home sweet home, I like the new foundation

Abuela:

It isn't perfect

Mirabel:

Neither are we!

Abuela:

That's true!

Just one more thing, before the celebration

Mirabel:

(Speaking)

What?

Bruno:

(Singing)

We need a doorknob

Antonio:

We made this one for you

Camilo, Dolores, Pepa & Félix:

We see how bright you burn

Isabela & Luisa:

We see how brave you've been

Julieta & Agustín: Now, see yourself in turn

Bruno:

You're the real gift, kid, let us in

Abuela:

Open your eyes

Abre los ojos

What do you see?

Mirabel:

I see me

All of me

Mirabel placed the new doorknob in the door. When she did, bright golden specks of magic engulfed the house, then the entire encanto. The front door then changed. This time images of the entire family all outlined in old sat at the front.

The window right above it creaked as it shook back and forth waving hello.

MIRABEL- "Hola, Casita."

Mirabel waved back. Suddenly the house began to bounce as though it were dancing. Then the floor beneath her shifted. Pulling her into the house.

MIRABEL- "Woah! Woah! Come on! Get in here!

With those words, Casita pulled the rest of the family and the townspeople into the house as well.

Background Music:

Noche de fiesta, todos vienen a celebrar

Noche de fiesta, todos llegan para gozar

ISABELA- "Ha!"

Isabela threw a few pollon filled balls below her, changing her dress design again.

Background Music:

Sigue bailando, contento en mi paraíso

ISABELA- "Yeah!"

She stomped her foot and watched as a multitude of new plants sprouted up from beneath her. And a large cactus grew from a large flower pot.

Y revelando milagros en cada piso

Lusia saw a chance to find out if her powers were back too and picked up the pot with ease, placing it on the table.

It wasn't long before Antonio, on the back of two donkeys appeared behind her and threw her on a hammock to relax.

(Ah-eh-ah-eh-ah-eh-ah-eh-ah-eh-ah-eh-ah-eh-ah-eh)

Encanto (Ah-eh-ah-eh-ah-eh-ah-eh)

Encanto (Ah-eh-ah-eh-ah-eh-ah-eh)

Background Music:

Colombia, te quiero tanto

Meanwhile Pepa and Félix stood in the middle of the room dancing as small bits of hail fell from the cloud above Pepa.

FÉLIX- "A-ha. Yeah, amour!"

Que siempre me enamora tu encanto

Colombia, te quiero tanto

The camera then panned to Abuela, Mirabel and Bruno who were watching and laughing at their family, all rejoicing in the return of the mgic.

BRUNO- "Woah."

The tiles underneath the three shifted and pulled them to an empty space. The rest of the family followed.

Background Music:

Que sigas bendiciendo tu encanto

Colombia, te quiero tanto

A camera then bounced over to the family, one of Bruno's rat friends taking the photo.

ABUELA- "Everyone, together!"

Background Music:

Que siempre me enamora tu encanto

ALL- "La Familia Madrigal!"

As they went to take the picture, Casita pushed them all together, they all fell on top of each other.

Background Music:

Colombia, te quiero tanto

BRUNO- "Hey!"

The picture was chaotic, and crazy yet so real and so perfectly them.

La Familia Madrigal.
