Chapter 6

“Yeah, sure.”

My tan, two-door, 1987 car was so old it just had a cassette player, but I had a special cassette with a wire attached that hooked up to a portable CD player. I held the player on my lap and blared music as we pulled out of the school parking lot. We talked and laughed on the way home, but I didn’t have the time to hang out, because it was Tuesday, and I had to work at four. I rushed home, changed into a blue-collared T-shirt and Tommy Hilfiger jeans, pulled my hair into a ponytail, and drove to Tony’s.

Waitressing was pretty fun. Tony’s closed at eight so I didn’t even have time to get bored before suddenly it was all over and time to go home again, with money in my pocket. Erin was getting home just as I pulled up in front of the house.

“I call the computer,” she said as we walked in the door.

I shrugged. “I’ve got homework, anyway.”
