In response, Kar propped himself up on his elbow. “Maybe I am, but you are still beautiful,” he replied simply, and offered a wink.

Now Daniel did manage to roll his eyes, and even add an incredulous shake of his head for good measure. He leaned back over Kar, intending to cast a looming shadow. “You will soon learn I have no need for compliments, Karden,” he said. “I’m not vain enough to need them, or foolish enough to believe them.” Before he could pull away, Karden reached out and placed a hand on Daniel’s chin.

“Dany. You. Are. Beautiful,” he said slowly, emphasizing each word as facts not to be challenged.

Unnerved by the unintentional heat he felt from Kar’s touch, Daniel furrowed his brow in disapproval, and tried to shake his head again. This time Kar sat up and placed both hands on Daniel’s cheeks. He leaned up until Daniel could feel his breath ghosting against his lips. “You. Are. Beautiful,” he whispered.
