Chapter 30

“We’re closed. I’m afraid you’ll have to leave,” said Daniel, stepping to block Karden from view.

Karden dodged his attempt and tossed him a look. “I’m not your damsel in distress,” he muttered. Kar turned to the men. “I represent Mr. Trace,” he said with the same ease as the strangers in front of him. “Is there something with which I can help you fine gentlemen this evening?” With Kar’s Jersey accent on full display, Daniel momentarily wondered if both sides would break into a 1950s musical with the Lower West Side of Chicago taking on Atlantic City. Sadly, no one started singing.

The small man pondered Kar for a moment, before he shrugged. “My associate and I represent the interests of the people providing financial support for one Professor Guerrieri. We’re here to assist Mr. Trace in any efforts to evaluate certain property.”

Daniel smacked the wine bottle on his desk. “Paulo? Are you kidding me? When did he start hiring thugs to break and enter?” he snapped.
