Chapter 23

As much as he enjoyed watching Paulo’s stunned reaction, the words shot uncertainty through Daniel. With each ding of the elevator, he worked to convince himself Karden was just trying to help, carrying on the illusion that started with the tea. He sneaked a glance to his left, waiting for a burst of laughter or a slap on the shoulder to assure him it was all in fun. It was just a favor, a kindness, Daniel silently repeated as they walked through the lobby and headed toward the underground garage.

Climbing into Kar’s black Honda CR-V, Daniel conjured up the courage to speak. “Thank you, Karden, really. I know you did it so I could save face. It was very…” An incredulous look from Kar made him stop. Not speaking, Kar raised a single finger as if begging for a moment. The silence thickened as Karden buckled his seatbelt. Daniel tried again. “Really, Karden, you went above and beyond…”

“Nope,” was all Karden said. He sat for a moment more, then started the car. Daniel looked at him.
