Chapter 17

Using Maddy’s arm as a brace, Daniel pulled himself up to stand. “Look everyone, Karden has better things to do with his life. We need to let him get on with that life.” And I need to stop letting my fantasies bleed into my dreams,Daniel added to himself.

Eleanor’s face scrunched in confusion. “But Daniel, you dreamed of him. That means…”

“It doesn’t mean anything, Eleanor,” Daniel replied gently. Sury opened her mouth, but Daniel cut her off as well. “It doesn’t mean anything,” he said with an insistence that brooked no argument. Sury scowled, but clamped her jaw shut. “I’m going to the book shop,” Daniel said.

Before anyone could protest, Karden ducked under Daniel’s arm. “I’ll get him back there,” he said, and helped him move toward the door. No one spoke, but Daniel felt their eyes following him and Karden as they made their way onto the street.

Hopping a few more steps, Daniel worked—and failed—to ignore the nearness of Karden.
