17 FEBRUARY, WEDNESDAY, BREAKFAST
By now, Savy had realized this might not be as funny as I made it out to be.
So I told them about my rerun dream.
"You dreamt it twice?" My mum asked.
I shrugged, "Yeah."
My parents were making a big deal out of this. I'm not sure why.
"What did the stars say, Sam?" Mum repeated the question.
"Twinkle twinkle little star~" Sabre sang helpfully.
"I got it." Ben started typing, "She was singing it in the car the other time."
He finished typing out the words and sent it. All the guys picked up their phones to look.
"And you didn't think to tell us, beta?" Ki chided lightly.
"How was I supposed to know it was prophetic?" Ben shrugged.
The other guys gave him a look, you know, the "duh, dude" like of look, and went back to studying the words.
Why were they picking on Ben about not realizing that it was important? I didn't think it was that important either. And didn't anyone notice how amazing it was that Ben could write it all out by memory just after hearing it once? But then again, these guys have been working closely with Ben for a while now. They would know that Ben had a super brain.
I tried to back Ben on this, "It's just a dream guys."
"Sam... Your dreams..." Dad started, and then stopped and frowned at his screen, "Better forward this to Lucas and Willow. I would like to hear their opinion."
"Yes, Alpha." Harvey responded immediately.
Their opinion on what?
"Dad, it's just a stupid dream..." I tried again.
"You should not have withheld this insight from us." Dad said, a little more sternly than I had expected. I drew back just a little because his wolf's intensity surprised me.
Mum tried to soothe it over, "Your Dad's just worried about you, Sam. Please we want to help, so next time tell us these things."
Help with what? I didn't need any help. Everything was okay... And then I noticed my betas were rather still.
And then Bell spoke, his voice deep and quiet at the same time, "She knows."
Dad looked up from his phone, "What?"
"She knows." Bell looked at the betas who nodded gravely, "Everything."
Dad raised a brow and then he put down his phone and sank back against the chair, "So you knew?"
Urm... Yes? No? I had no idea really, since I didn't have a clue what you guys were referring to.
And then Mate got agitated all over again, he stood up and threw his phone across the room. It hit the bullet proof glass door and then rebounded and slid across the floor. I suddenly understood why his screen was cracked. My Luna was not one who believed in not shooting the messenger.
"F***." Was all he said. He walked away from the table, I could hear him pace the hallway outside, "F***. F***. F***." My Luna was not one who believed in controlling his tongue.
"Who cares about your beauty if your tongue is ugly?" My mum often said to me as I was growing up. It was the conclusion of a story about a beautiful Luna, who of course had to offend the Moon Goddess over some petty thing, and the Moon Goddess asked her the above question and then cast a spell to bind her outward beauty to her inward beauty. But the Luna didn't give up, she worked hard to change herself, and ended up even more beautiful after that.
And then my outwardly beautiful Luna did something that produced the sound of the wall breaking. My Luna was not one who believed calmness is mastery.
Dad was growling lowly too. Mum had just read the words off Dad's phone with a hand over her mouth. She had tears in her eyes. Sabre looked frightened, but it just because everyone was acting weird.
Ki got up to go calm Bell. I'm not sure what Ki could do.
"It's okay." I patted Sabre's red curls, "I never know what's going on half the time either. You'd survive."
Sabre didn't look convinced. Like I said, Sabre's pretty sharp for a preschooler.
Dad was still frowning at his phone, "Maybe Willow might be able to explain it better." He mumbled. Mum was rubbing his back.
Outside, Ki was saying something to Bell, I couldn't make out exactly what.
And then Bell roared back, "F*** the goddess! I'd like to see HER smiling till she died! F*** her! I don't care if she's the goddess. I'm going to hunt her down and kill her! Grrrrrr..."
This was followed by the sound of scuffling. Sabre climbed out of her chair into Mum's arms. Mum cuddled her close.
Harvey stood up and excused himself to help Ki, "Apologies, our Luna Bell is understanbly upset."
Why was that understandable?
The rest of the table nodded. Even Savy who hadn't been sent the words. She looked at me, "I'm guessing you didn't get good news from those stars."
Really? I mean, I wouldn't call it good news, but which part of the song triggered Mate (and everyone else)?
I held up my hand, "Ben, can I see that?"
I was beginning to suspect that Ben might have written the wrong lyrics.
Ben was reluctant to part with his phone, but I was his alpha. He put his second most prized possession into my hand. (No prizes for guessing his #1 possession.)
As far as I could tell, the lyrics were all there. I read it all over again, trying to think of it as darkly and pessimistically as possible.
It was one single line, right in the middle of the song, "Keep on smiling till you die."
Oh. Right. They all thought I was going to die at 18.
Hm. I guess reading these lines just confirmed it for them.
"I'm not going to die." I said.
"What?" Savy asked. Now this was news to her. She looked at Dad and Mum, and then at me, "Sam, what are you saying?"
Opps. Now Savy was upset. I remembered Lizzy saying something to that effect.
"Nothing." I quickly tried to cover up. And then to Mum and Dad, "I can explain. I really can. I have a plan. I'm not going to die."
Outside, something crashed.
"Should I go deal with it?" Ben asked with a smirk. Ben's idea of dealing with it would be shifting into wolf form and chewing everything out.
I tossed his phone so that his smirk fled instantly. He caught his phone before it hit anything. Unlike my Luna, Ben's phone screen would NEVER be cracked. Ben was more likely to crack his own skull than his precious phone.
"No. I'll do it." I got up and went out to the hallway.
It didn't actually look as bad as it sounded. There was a broken bowl of flowers and wet patch on the carpet, but the three guys were just standing around it. Bell was still growling but his arms were crossed, so it didn't look like he was about to punch anyone or anything. Ki and Harvey were assessing the damage. I guess I missed the main event.
"The wall too, Ki. Should I call someone to come down and repair it?" Harvey asked.
Ki looked over to the wall, "I'll do it, Harv. You have school today."
"No, I'll get Ben." Harvey decided, "You're overloaded as it is."
"Not Ben. The wallpaper pattern might end up disjointed." Ki shook his head, "Let me do it."
Harvey looked grim, "I'll talk to Ben..."
They turned at my approach.
"Alpha is here." Harvey intoned.
I was getting called "alpha" more than "princess" lately, which had to mean I was getting more respect too, right? But this wasn't the time to carry out a poll on my Alpha VS Princess status.
I reached out and rubbed my mate's back, "I'm not going to die." I said, "You need to let me explain properly first."
Bell paused his growling, and then resumed it again, "If I ever see the Moon Goddess, I'll kill her."
My mate was really stubborn like that.
Could you kill a god? Moon Goddess, not that I think Bell was actually capapble of hurting you, but you might wanna avoid him for the time being.
I sighed, "It's getting late. Who's sending me to school? I'll try to explain the dream later, but just know that it's not as bad as you guys are making it out to be, okay?"
I head bumped my mate's broad shoulder, "Especially you. I told you, I'm not going to die."
I won't die, especially since there was no way in hell that I was going to leave my pack and betas and all my sassy wolves at the mercy of my black hearted luna! I was the alpha, and I will protect their happiness, even from you, my moon and rose.
But as usual, no one believed me. Dad scheduled a meeting tonight to further examine the prophecy. Apparently, it was a big deal when stars talked. And twice was like a firm confirmation. I decided it wasn't a good idea to remind them that the stars didn't just talked, they SANG. They were already freaking out more than I liked.
No one seemed to think I really did have an explanation either. I wasn't even expected to attend the meeting, but I accidentally caught Beta Lucas incoming mindlink to schedule the meeting with Bell and my betas on Dad's behalf.
"Me too!" I announced aloud, "I'm coming to the meeting too."
Did no one remember that it was MY dream?
Everyone took pause and then wrote it down to the fact that I had that awesome "power of insight" again.
I wanted to explain that I didn't, but I didn't get the chance.
Harvey took a quick glance at his watch, "Luna Bell, your car is ready."
Well, it's not like I knew exactly how to explain it either.
Bell nodded. Ki handed me my things. Nobody told me that Bell was sending me to school today. I wouldn't be surprised if they all thought I would just know these things. Grrr...
But the moment Mate's hand touched my back to lead me to the car, all was forgiven. Mate was driving me to school! Yay!
{Mate!}
"Bye!" I remembered at the last moment to give my family a quick wave.
"Have a good day at school." Mum smiled automatically. Suddenly we were back to the everyday mode. I couldn't help but smile at that. I liked everyday mode best.
"Have a safe trip, Alpha and Luna." Ki smiled at us while holding the door. That was new, but I assumed it was a Lorent everyday thing, maybe. Bell nodded, his features still arranged as if this was the last chore he would want to do in his life - which I suppose was his everyday face.
But I knew he was secretly happy about it. Because we shared a mating bond. Hahaha. So my Mate liked to pretend to be grouchy.
Today, Bell was all dressed up. He was wearing a new suit today. Even though Ki had applied his beta magic and got rid of the new clothes smell, I knew it was new because it didn't have anyone's scent on it. The suit was all in black, jacket, vest, pants, shirt... very un-Lorent, but like the Lorent's favourite white, I realised that if you put enough black next to each other, blacks had different shades too.
We took his white convertible and the usual four motorbike escorts and zipped across the highway as the sun rose.
The sun was rising just a little earlier now, and I watched its first light tease Mate's dark hair and cast shadows on his profile.
"What?" Mate growled a little self consciously at me.
"Hn?" I blinked, "I wasn't looking!"
Oh, wait, he didn't say I was. I quickly looked out the window on my side of the car, feeling the heat on my cheeks. It was my gift of insight! Uh, yeah. Right. Hahaha.
Luckily, Bell probably wouldn't be able to see my embaressment since he had to drive, and the dawn lighting was discreet.
Bell growled, just a little, but continued driving. He hadn't spoken two words in a row since we left the house. I could feel that his wolf was still inwardly troubled.
I put my hand on his knee in a bid to reach out and sooth him, but it suddenly felt too intimate so I patted his knee lightly and removed my hand.
He growled again and I looked out of the window. We were still a while away from school. I didn't usually notice the length of the journey to school. Usually, Harvey or Ki would be running through my schedule along with a string of reminders or updates, or we'd just be talking, and before I knew it, I would have reached school.
I had to admit, I missed having one of my betas around. Who was going to tell me what was on my schedule today? Was I supposed to just wing it?
My phone buzzed. Oh. I took it out to check.
HARVEY
I've updated your calendar with tonight's meeting. The notes for the meeting is in your Kindle. Please let me know if there is anything else you would like me to prepare.
Oh right. My phone. I looked for the calendar app.
"Stop that." Mate growled.
Stop what?
"When you're in the car with me, you look at me." Mate growled.
I put down the phone and looked at him. Wait, what?
Mate continued driving in silence. I couldn't help but notice how the early morning light left a faint blush on his tanned cheeks.
"Don't stare." He growled at me again.
He wanted me to look at him, but he didn't want me to stare at him... I suddenly remembered why I used to call him Dumbbell.
I crossed my arms and stared pointedly at the glove compartment. Stoooopid mate.
Other people's Luna might be the moon and a rose, but mine had to be a Dumbbell.
